Yeah, applying that makes X start, but then the screen is all black
instead of showing me anything.

OpenGL 2.1 and modesetting was disabled for the old Intel GMA because they need software fragment shader, which hurts some program including Chrome. It only make sense to enable it again if that issue is resolved or if the itel driver is even worse. The easy alternative is still downgrading the intel driver to a working state or following up on fixing it rather soon.
