I'm all for having a more LTS type release (whatever the mechanism ends up being) but packaging needs to be made a lot easier as most of us have $DAYJOBS and in my case has nothing to do with Linux/FOSS or the like. Everything I do is either squeezed in while taking a mental break from said $DAYJOB or in my home office instead of spending time with the wife and kids.

I see arbitrary branching (orthogonal to modularity) as part of that solution. But again, it needs to be easy and well documented.
