The OLPC project is actually an interesting corner-case, as it's 686 capable
(it even has cmov), however it allegedly runs code tuned for 586 faster.
I tried various options with the older versions of those processors and 486
not unsuprisingly came out best given its essentially (or was - I don't know
how much the core has changed) a 486 with goodies bolted on.
486 without padding was best from memory
