I would certainly build just the smi2021 driver if I knew how to, but
I followed the only instructions I could find for Fedora:

How would I go about compiling just the module? The kernel source would have
to be patched, no?
Hey at least you have the official upstream patch, I had "only" vendor source
for my (not this one) device. ;)
The point is to test the device before you start spending hours on the whole kernel, if
you need it in the first place.
