This is what other distros use /var for.
And the FHS clearly states creating new /var roots is a no-go, so /var
is a dead-end for new protocol/serving needs (like bittorent)
Nevertheless the answers others had provided also are correct. The
FHS
is ambivalent.
As usual the FHS tries to catter to everyone by not closing the door
on existing non-streamlined practices. IMHO interested people @fedora
should just agree on a new clean all-encompassing /srv layout, and get
it stamped at FHS (keeping in mind the FHS will still allow older
practices, which is ok as long as there is a good preferred layout in
the standard)
/srv being: any variable data which primary purpose is being exposed
to other systems via a network interface (can include webapp variable
data)
/me thinks, FPC is overinterpreting the FHS due to lack of
familiarity
with exiting practice on other distros.
/me thinks the FHS is intentionaly written in such a way it can be
interpreted at minima by laggards, but we should not block needed
changes just because there are escape clauses in the FHS.
