So consider this a vote for a serious review of up2date.
The problem is that the initrd and the boot menu item is created when
the kernel package is installed, in the post-install scripts. What
happened was surely that the kernel installed fine but the post-install
scripts failed. As far as I can tell there's no way to tell that the
post-install scripts failed using RPM, so this really isn't up2date's
fault, it's a limitation of rpm.
