Notice of intent to orphan salt
by Gwyn Ciesla 03 May '24

03 May '24

salt-master has been broken on Fedora since Fedora 39, when we moved to Python 3.12. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2250197 Upstream doesn't seem particularly interested in supporting anything outside of their 'onedir' packaging, which bundles it's own Python stack. Most of the work required to work on 3.12, I THINK, involves unbundling twisted, which is non-trival. The good news is that they do that with the 3007.x series. The bad news is that that requires a recent version of python-cryptography that breaks several other packages: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2257380 Since I needed something that works for config management, I've migrated my own stuff from salt to something that works with distro packaging and doesn't have odd version constraints¹. As a consequence, I can no longer sufficiently test new releases. As a result, I've just sent 3006.8 to updates-testing for rawhide-f38, and will orphan salt on May 21 2024, when f38 is EOL. If someone wants to take ownership before then, please let me know. -Gwyn 1. Simpler first tutorial package for Package Maintainer Docs
by Otto Liljalaakso 03 May '24

03 May '24

Hello everybody, I wrote a pull request for Package Maintainer Docs about adding a simpler tutorial package than GNU Hello [1]. Since it is a larger change and I have not received any reviews yet, I would like to announce this work here, in hope of getting some feedback, before just merging the change. Since I have already described the work in the pull request description, I will just copy it here below. Feel free to respond on the list or in pull request comments. [1]: https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/package-maintainer-docs/pull-request/153 > Add simpler Banner package to packaging tutorial > > Packaging tutorial's approach of packaging GNU Hello has suffered from > certain complexities in GNU Hello package. The package is quite old and > uses some tooling from the GNU project that are not very widely used > any more, such as Texinfo. Also, the package is old and thus suffers > from e.g. having a file that is not UTF-8 encoded. To avoid immediately > exposing tutorial readers to these quirks, make GNU Hello part 2 of the > tutorial and add a simpler package, Banner, as part 1. This way the > reader can reach a complete specfile, compliant with Fedora guidelines, > quicker, and still get a feeling for resolving packaging quirks in the > second part. > > In the future, basing the first tutorial on real packages should > probably be switched to hosting dedicated "test project", which avoid > any quirks and can be packaged to Fedora requirements using only > Fedora's set of RPM macros. Such package should also avoid GNU > Autotools and be based on CMake or Meson, which are simpler to > understand and more widespread today.

F41 Change Proposal: Drop Mandatory Requires on JRE (system-wide)
by Aoife Moloney 03 May '24

03 May '24

Wiki - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Drop_Mandatory_Requires_on_JRE Announced - https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/f41-change-proposal-drop-mandatory-r… This is a proposed Change for Fedora Linux. This document represents a proposed Change. As part of the Changes process, proposals are publicly announced in order to receive community feedback. This proposal will only be implemented if approved by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee. == Summary == Drop the requirement of Java libraries to have Requires on JREs. == Owner == * Name: [[User:mkoncek| Marián Konček]] * Email: mkoncek(a)redhat.com == Detailed Description == Current [https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/packaging-guidelines/Java/#_buildrequi… guidelines] require all Java packages to `Require: java-headless or java-headless >= 1:minimal_required_version`. Our aim is to drop this explicit requirement on Java library packages. The requirement should stay for Java applications. === Context === Java packages are compiled using `javac` into `.class` files and composed into `.jar` archives. Jar archives can be used as compile or runtime dependencies for other packages or can be directly executed with the java command provided by a JRE. Jar archives can be executed using the command: `java -jar ${FILE}`. This command executes the `main` method either specified via CLI or specified within the Jar manifest file. Java packages, which serve as libraries only, lack the `main` method and are not executable. Therefore, there is no requirement on any specific JRE imposed by the library implicitly. === Different JDKs === This proposal is also related to the topic of different JDKs. Developers may want to use or build packages which use a JDK different than the one provided by the `java-<N>-openjdk` package. After this proposal was implemented, they would be able to depend on Java library packages with no introduction of the OpenJDK package. === Rationale === Java libraries are more similar to native libraries than to libraries written in dynamic scripting languages. They are compiled to a bytecode and are not executable. Java libraries can be used as dependencies for any Java application and there is no implicit dependency on the system default JDK. Java applications, on the other hand, are expected to be tested and to work with the system JDK and from the user's perspective: after installing an application they must be able to simply run the binary. Therefore the `Requires` on the system JDK is kept for Java applications. == Feedback == == Benefit to Fedora == * Very little user-visible benefit. * Reduced dependencies of Java packages. * Simplified maintenance of Java packages. ** Smaller impact of JDK major updates (e.g. `1.8.0 -> 11 -> 17 -> 21`). Introducing a new system version of JDK requires the rebuild of each Java package in order to have updated `Requires` to contain the newest version. == Scope == * Proposal owners: ** Find all Java applications in Fedora, i.e. packages which `BuildRequire` `java-devel / maven-local / ant` and at the same time install files into `/bin` or `/sbin` or `/usr/bin` or `/usr/sbin`. ** Open pull requests adding `Requires: java-headless` into their `.spec` file. ** Remove `Requires` generator from [https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/javapackages-tools/blob/8714cc1d03d3f312… javapackages-tools] ** Wait for a mass rebuild. * Other developers: ** Maintainers of Java applications will need to add an explicit `Requires: java-headless` field into their `.spec` file or a specific version of thereof (such as `java-17-openjdk-headless`). * Release engineering: [https://pagure.io/releng/issue/12069 #12069] ** Mass rebuild is not required, this change can propagate via natural rebuilds. * Policies and guidelines: ** Guidelines need to be modified ([https://pagure.io/packaging-committee/pull-request/1360 open Pull Request]). * Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change) * Alignment with Community Initiatives: N/A == Upgrade/compatibility impact == * For Java libraries: ** This change is removing `Requires` and therefore users manually installing a Java library will not additionally install the JVM. * For Java applications: ** After fully implemented, applications will no longer be installable along with any JVM but rather only the system one (unless the package maintainer decides otherwise) == How To Test == * Installing a Java library should not typically install JVM (but can if the library depends on a Java application) * Installing a Java application MUST cause the installation of the system-wide JVM (or a different version thereof) * Executing a binary installed in typical locations (such as `/usr/bin`) MUST NOT cause an error related to the JVM not being installed. == User Experience == Users with no Java application installed, but some Java libraries installed: the JVM may be automatically uninstalled as it is possibly not required by anything. It is possible that there are users with only some older JVM installed. The following depends on the decision of each Java application package maintainer, but the general expectation is that the system-wide JVM will be installed and the older JVM will no longer be required by other packages. Users who explicitly installed JVMs of various versions: no change. == Dependencies == * `javapackages-tools` ** This change allows the removal of the `Requires` generator. == Contingency Plan == * Contingency mechanism: ** In case of unexpected problems, the `Requires` generators can be reintroduced into `javapackages-tools` and packages can be rebuilt. * Contingency deadline: Branch Fedora Linux 41 from Rawhide Tue 2024-08-06 * Blocks release? No == Documentation == No documentation outside of this document. == Release Notes == -- Aoife Moloney Fedora Operations Architect Fedora Project Matrix: @amoloney:fedora.im IRC: amoloney -- _______________________________________________ devel-announce mailing list -- devel-announce(a)lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to devel-announce-leave(a)lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel-announce@lists.fedorapr… Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

Is glibc32 retired?
by Florian Weimer 03 May '24

03 May '24

I didn't have a dist-git token for fedpkg, so retiring failed after doing some work the first time. Is the package actually retired? This command koji list-history --package=glibc32 does not show any recent activity. I would expect something to untag it from the buildroot. (Bonus question: can we retire the package from Fedora 40, too?) Thanks, Florian

mock bootstrap broken for EL8-based targets without use_bootstrap_image - what's a proper fix?
by Michel Lind 02 May '24

02 May '24

Seems like because filelists are no longer part of the default metadata in Fedora's dnf, python3-dnf cannot be installed because it depends on ... /usr/libexec/platform-python This is with ``` config_opts['use_bootstrap_image'] = False ``` as I'm running mock inside a podman container running Fedora. ``` Error: Problem 1: conflicting requests - nothing provides /usr/libexec/platform-python needed by python3-dnf-4.7.0-19.el8.alma.noarch from baseos Problem 2: package python3-dnf-plugins-core-4.0.21-23.el8.alma.1.noarch from baseos requires python3-dnf >= 4.7.0-6, but none of the providers can be installed - cannot install the best candidate for the job - nothing provides /usr/libexec/platform-python needed by python3-dnf-4.7.0-19.el8.alma.noarch from baseos (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages or '--setopt=optional_metadata_types=filelists' to load additional filelists metadata) ERROR: Command failed: # /usr/bin/dnf-3 --installroot /var/lib/mock/alma+epel-8-x86_64-bootstrap/root/ --releasever 8 --setopt=deltarpm=False --setopt=allow_vendor_change=yes --allowerasing --disableplugin=local --disableplugin=spacewalk --disableplugin=versionlock install python3-dnf python3-dnf-plugins-core No matches found for the following disable plugin patterns: local, spacewalk, versionlock ``` Adding `--setopt=optional_metadata_types=filelists` as suggested and scrubbing the mock chroot seems to work (scrubbing is necessary, otherwise the existing metadata does not have /usr/libexec indexed) ``` config_opts['dnf_common_opts'] = ['--setopt=deltarpm=False', '--setopt=allow_vendor_change=yes', '--allowerasing', '--setopt=optional_metadata_types=filelists'] ``` (taking the existing value from /usr/share/doc/mock/site-defaults.cfg and adding the suggested option) This seems to only affect those running recent Fedora on the host (where filelists are no longer indexed in the default metadata), who also need to generate their own bootstrap (because `use_bootstrap_image` is disabled), who are working on EL8 (because python3-dnf has a dependency on /usr/libexec/platform-python -- no such thing on EL9 and above) - so I'm not sure if this can be fixed upstream or should just be documented somewhere. e.g. we could fix it in /etc/mock/templates/{almalinux,centos-stream,rhel}-8.tpl but that would presumably slow down those who just use the bootstrap image? My workaround now is sticking that dnf_common_opts hack in ~/.config/mock.cfg, and commenting it out when I'm not bootstrapping an EL8 chroot. Introducing Fedora Change Proposal 'Blueprints' (in association with Fedora QA)
by Aoife Moloney 02 May '24

02 May '24

Hi Folks, Sumantro Mukherkjee and I have been working on a concept for the last few weeks on how we could try to bridge the gap between changes for the upcoming release(s) of Fedora being announced and developed, and then tested by QA later in the release cycle. What we have come up with is called a ‘Change Proposal Blueprint’ - a fancy way of saying if a change proposal owner wants some initial testing for their change, Fedora QA will try to support them by helping write and run initial basic tests. This 'blueprint' concept is proposed as an optional step for change proposal owners, with the condition that Fedora QA can provide assistance if available. While QA has shown enthusiasm for the idea, it's important to note that support is likely but not guaranteed. The concept is primarily aimed at System Wide and Mass Rebuild changes. By integrating this option into the change proposal template, proponents hope to enhance proposals, making them clearer and more likely to be accepted by the Fedora community and FESCo. This approach also benefits QA by involving them earlier in changes, particularly those with uncertainties or extensive scopes. By facilitating early feedback and testing, potential issues can be identified sooner, giving developers more time to address them before Beta or Final releases. Additionally, offering a supported method for creating a minimal version of the change for testing enables users to identify potentially hidden breaking dependencies that may only surface during the Rawhide builds. This early detection capability, coupled with the option for preliminary testing, provides developers with more time to address any bugs before reaching the Beta or Final stages. Given the stress typically experienced as release time approaches, providing assistance with early testing at the outset of a change proposal could significantly alleviate pressure on developers and QA teams, making it a worthwhile endeavor to explore. Our change proposal is such a powerful process, so we wanted to leverage this by introducing the option of requesting early testing support by adding it to our change proposal template. You will now see a section in the template called Early Testing (Optional) <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/EmptyTemplate#Early_Testing_(Optiona…> and instructions on how to reach out to Fedora QA - it's basically send an email to test(a)lists.fedoraproject.org <test(a)fedoraproject.org> with a link to your change proposal and a member of QA (likely Sumantro) will reply to you :) You can also reach out to Sumantro directly too, but preference will be to email the list as this will give you more coverage. Some anti-goals of this idea are not to fully test a change before it goes through the process, nor is it a shortcut to land an un-approved change in Fedora either, but rather an opportunity to bring a quality mindset into the development process much earlier so Fedora can benefit from iterative development backed by quality. We expect changes to be built in a COPR and tested here where possible, and not built in rawhide directly from scratch, as Rawhide is the next Fedora release and we would rather not break that too much :) Sumantro is the lead on this, and I will be supporting him and QA as we work together to see if this helps enhance the project's release cycle. You can reach out to either or both of us if you would like to chat in detail about it, and we would love to hear your feedback on this idea! Kind regards, Aoife & Sumantro -- Aoife Moloney Fedora Operations Architect Fedora Project Matrix: @amoloney:fedora.im IRC: amoloney
