Major owncloud updates incoming
by James Hogarth
Hi all,
We're at the last stages of preparing the first major owncloud update in a
while.
The current version of owncloud in Fedora is the fairly old stable 8.0
release (presently 8.0.10) which we want to bring back in line with the
current owncloud upstream release of 8.2.2.
Unfortunately it's not possible to migrate directly from 8.0.x to 8.2.x as
upstream only supports jumping in increments with no skipping of major
releases.
In order for a smooth transition to 8.2.x (and after that 9.0.x when it's
released) we'll be releasing 8.1.5 to F23 and F22 within the next couple of
weeks.
We plan to leave this in updates-testing for a slightly longer period than
usual to allow for a wider test base for a major version jump. Please
remember your backups prior to the upgrade!
Once 8.1.5 is pushed to updates 8.2.2 will be pushed to updates-testing for
a similar extended period. It's imperative that the 8.1.5 update is applied
before the 8.2.2 update is pushed to updates.
If you want to assist in the testing and provide feedback or bug reports
please use the usual channels of bodhi and bugzilla - both easily
accessible from pkgdb:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/package/rpms/owncloud/
Kind regards,
James

Large number of packages to be orphaned on Feb 26
by Josh Boyer
Hello,
In today's FESCo meeting, FESCo agreed to orphan all of Christoper
Meng's packages on February 26, 2016 at 17:00 UTC if there was no
further contact from Christopher. Normally we would not necessarily
pre-announce an oprhaning action, however the number of packages in
question is quite large. He is the point of contact for 230 packages.
As a heads up to the greater community, the packages are listed below.
In the event that we have to go through with the orphaning, please
review them for packages you may wish to take over as the primary
point of contact. Should Christopher respond, we would still
encourage actively seeking out co-maintainers for all of these
packages.
Thank you.

libcue soname bump
by Peter Lemenkov
Hello All!
I'm going to upgrade libcue. Unfortunately this requires a soname
bump. Fortunately only recompilation is necessary.

glibc in Fedora rawhide now split by langpacks.
by Carlos O'Donell
The glibc in Fedora rawhide and F24 is now split by
language packs. We have over 180 supported languages
in glibc, and those have been split into langpacks
for transparent install and support via dnf. This
greatly reduces the size of a glibc install from 130MB
down to a couple of megs. It drops support for the hacky
%_inst_langs feature, and relies entirely on langpack
support (it was one or the other).
Thanks to Mike Fabian for the great work!
Bug 1238406 - Glibc locale subpackaging
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1238406
Changes/Glibc locale subpackaging
https://fedoraproject.org//wiki/Changes/Glibc_locale_subpackaging
Notes:
- If you don't use langpacks you won't get any locales
except C, POSIX and C.UTF-8.
- If you don't want to use langpacks just install the
glibc langpack you want manually.
e.g. dnf install glibc-langpack-en
- Anaconda should take care of everything for you via
langpacks.
- We missed the fact that for the F23->F24 transition
`dnf system-upgrade` should install glibc-all-langpacks
(meta package) to give F23 users a smooth transition
with all the locales they had before, but once in F24
the langpacks will be used.
Filed:
Bug 1312103 - “dnf system-upgrade” needs to install
“glibc-all-langpacks” when upgrading from f23 to f24

Carlos.

Dnf untagging and unpushing of updates
by Dennis Gilmore
Hi Michal,
I have unpushed from f24 and rawhide dnf-1.1.7-1 and revoked the requests for updates.
The main reason being that the api changed ina way that broke our ability to create install
media.

I would like to work out ways to allow development to go forward but we need to ensure
that changes are syncronised with the users as we do so.

Thank you for providing this valuable information about the handling
of the private key that enables Fedora ISO signing. This information
should be shared and highlighted as it is helping to create trust in
the use of this key.
As a personal request, would you be so kind as to confirm the fingerprint
here (and maybe somewhere else), please. Thank you very much.

OCaml plans on POWER7/POWER8 (ppc64, ppc64le) in Rawhide
by Richard W.M. Jones
OCaml is a statically-safe programming language derived from ML which
compiles to very fast native code. It contains native code backends
for most architectures (all Fedora primary & secondary arches except
s/390x in fact).
Currently Fedora downstream carries two non-upstream backends:
For ppc64 (big endian), a backend was written many years ago by David
Woodhouse and was upstream for a time, but was dropped when the
PlayStation 3 stopped supporting Linux. For ppc64le (little endian /
POWER8) IBM's Michel Normand contributed a native code backend last
year. The upstream project always carried a ppc (32 bit) backend, but
we didn't use it and it's not very interesting for us.
https://git.fedorahosted.org/cgit/fedora-ocaml.git/log/?h=fedora-24-4.02
Red Hat and IBM have provided help and loaned equipment to the
upstream project, and as a result upstream have now added ppc64 and
ppc64le backends. This work was merged at the end of August. These
backends were inspired by the Red Hat & IBM work but are not
derivatives. For details see:
https://github.com/ocaml/ocaml/pull/225
So what I want to do is add the new backends [actually it's a single,
combined and extended ppc/ppc64/ppc64le backend] to Fedora Rawhide,
and drop our non-upstream backends.
I have so far cherry-picked the merge commit on top of our Fedora
OCaml tree, and I have dropped the downstream ppc64/ppc64le commits
from our tree. (This is not pushed yet so doesn't appear in the
git.fedorahosted.org link above.)
I have tested it on ppc64le to check that the compiler compiles
itself. A scratch build of the compiler with the new backend is here
(I reserve the right to make further changes, this is just a
preliminary test build):
http://ppc.koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2741551
I used this to compile some ocaml-* packages on ppc64le, with -- it
has to be said -- mixed results. There are two compiler bugs
revealed. This compiler won't be able to compile all the ocaml-*
packages on POWER. However because of the depth of dependencies, I
cannot easily do scratch builds to find out which packages will be
broken.
Hence I'd like to do a full rebuild, again, to see what breaks. This
*shouldn't affect primary architectures at all*, but will probably
leave some broken ocaml-* packages on the ppc64/ppc64le secondary
arches.
We've actually done two complete rebuilds during the F24 development
cycle already, which in a way is good because it means I know how long
it should take, and I'm confident that the scripts I use will work
again:
http://git.annexia.org/?p=goals.git;a=blob;f=fedora_ocaml_rebuild.ml;h=13...
So I'm pretty confident the primary arch rebuild will go fine, since
it's not affected by any of the above changes - it's basically just a
release bump. We don't even need to use a side tag for this because
the "old" and "new" packages can be mixed on x86 - they are the same.
The plan for ppc64/ppc64le would then be to fix the bugs revealed in
the rebuild with upstream help.
Any comments?
Rich.

Fedora mass rebuild 2016
by Marek Polacek
In the past few days and weeks we did a mass rebuild of Fedora rawhide packages
in mock with GCC 6 (and corresponding libtool) and for those packages that
failed also rebuilt the same package with gcc-5.3.1-2.fc23.x86_64 to quickly
remove from the list packages that fail for non-GCC related reasons.
There were 17741 packages overall (last year we had 16230 packages). 16281
packages built fine, 883 packages failed to build with both gcc-6 and gcc-5
(ignored for this analysis, unlikely to be GCC 6 related). This left us with
577 packages that had to be analyzed. That is a lot -- last year we only had
to examine 236 packages. So that's why it's taken so long.
As usually, there will be a "porting to" document to ease the transition to
the new GCC. We already have https://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-6/porting_to.html, even
though this document is still somewhat in flux.
The biggest change hands-down this year is the change of the default standard
for g++ from -std=gnu++98 to -std=gnu++14; this has caused considerable churn,
as you might have noticed on this mailing list. Unfortunately, many packages
weren't prepared to handle C++11. Changes in libstdc++ often revealed very
poor programming practices.
Before I describe the results in more detail, I'd like to thank Jon Wakely and
Jakub Jelinek for their indispensable help.
Any mistakes, omissions, or mis-categorizations are solely mine.

Some of them worked in the past, but only by luck and were just ill-fated.
Please try to fix the issues rather than adding workaround flags like
-fpermissive, -Wno-unused-but-set-variable etc.
Most of the issues should be described in porting_to, so I won't repeat it
here. Especially, if something fails, try using -fno-delete-null-pointer-checks
or -fno-lifetime-dse before opening a PR. However, it's certainly possible
that a compiler bug might crept it, and the code is valid. It's not feasible
for me to try to fix all these packages.

I think this fails because of new version of 'appstream-util'; it now
consideres an XML as invalid, as opposed to the version coming in F23

no idea. There's
error: m4_copy: won't overwrite defined macro: glib_DEFUN
and that probably isn't gcc-related

bash completion dirs
by Thomas Moschny
Hi,
the "old" bash completion dir /etc/bash_completion.d is now owned by
the filesystem package, so packages don't need (actually: are
forbidden) to own that dir and also don't have to depend on the
bash-completion package. This perfectly makes sense.
However, for the same reasons, shouldn't the filesystem package also
own the "new" /usr/share/bash-completion/completions location?
