Orphaning spectrum in Fedora
by Matej Cepl
That’s spectrum1 which has been long dead upstream, and there is
no further development in upstream (for spectrum2 which would be
a replacement), so I don't want to drag it further. I’ll keep it
in EPEL 5,6 and if any bug happens, I’ll patch it.
Any takers?
Yeah, I thought so ....

Looks like we will be able to flush the negative cache between networks
in the next version of unbound.

Implemented, in commit 3125.
Flushes also the bad key entries from the key cache (because they
could be because of nxdomains).

[RFC] plans for initscripts in F22
by Lukáš Nykrýn
Hi,
for the F22 I am planning some bigger changes regarding initscripts and
I would like to ask for comments.
Initscripts package was in the past a crucial part of the system. They
basicaly set up whole system during the boot. Currently initscripts
package contains "support" for initscripts (/etc/init.d/function,
service command), network initscripts and tons of leftovers.
So my plan is following:
We must keep initscripts support, but I can imagine a setup where every
service uses a systemd unit, so this part does not have to be installed
by default, but could be pulled in as a dependency.
Network initscript. This will be probably the most controversial part.
In fedora 21 we will have three different tools for networking
(initscripts, NetworkManager and systemd-networkd) and all of them will
be installed by default. For various design reasons network initscripts
does not have any future (it is completely synchronous and does not work
with parallel boot very well). So I would like to split it in its own
package and drop it in the future. For most of the use-cases NM is
sufficient replacement and if somebody will miss a static configuration
we are planning to replace network initscript functionality in networkd.
Than there are scripts and configs like
/etc/crypttab
/etc/inittab
/etc/profile.d/256term.sh
/usr/lib/systemd/fedora-autorelabel
/usr/bin/ipcalc
/usr/bin/usleep
/usr/sbin/consoletype
/usr/sbin/genhostid
/usr/sbin/sushell
/var/log/btmp
/var/log/wtmp
I would like to find a new better home for them.
So I am suggesting to start with splitting initscripts to these
sub-packages.
initscripts - initscripts support
initscripts-core (looking for better name) - the leftovers which needs
to by installed by default for now, but we will move everything from it
to different components
initscripts-network - network initscript
initscripts-readonly - support for readonly root should be redesigned
completelly
initscripts-doc
initscripts-locale
initscripts-man
For more details please see the new spec file:
http://lnykryn.fedorapeople.org/initscripts/10/initscripts.spec
And here is a test package and copr build:

default local DNS failover solution needed, nscd?
by Chuck Anderson
I'm starting a new thread to clarify and emphasize the problem I'm
actually trying to solve. Here is the problem restated as I posted it
to the dns-operations list:
-----
Is it really expected that the first DNS server listed in
/etc/resolv.conf should never go down? Operationally speaking, who
can actually rely on listing multiple nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
and using libc's failover mechanism in any kind of production server?
Because the failover behavior in libc is atrocious--each new or
existing process has to re-do the failover after timing out, and even
long-running processes have to call res_init() to re-read resolv.conf.
It seems that the only sensible way to run a datacenter (or a network
full of Linux workstations for that matter) is to either:
1. Make sure the first nameserver listed in resolv.conf never goes
down by using Anycast DNS or some other failover mechanism like
VRRP or CARP on the DNS server side.
or:
2. Use a local DNS daemon on every server with forwarders configured
to the network's nameservers, and fix resolv.conf to 127.0.0.1.
-----
(I've since learned that nscd can be a third option)

Ignorance about nscd on my part. Please tell me more. What are the
honest pros/cons to using nscd? Are there still big enough problems
with nscd to warrant its poor reputation?
> >nscd is ... bad
I've since learned more about nscd. Apparently its reputation may be
undeserved, at least the newer versions in glibc. I have no direct
experience, but I finally found a good thread about fixing the stub
resolver that addresses people's unwillingness to use nscd as well as
some other things that could be done, such as a patch apparently
carried by Debian and Ubuntu that improves detection of changes to
resolv.conf:
https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-12/msg00416.html
> Main goal is to have local DNSSEC-validating resolver.
I, as the OP, did not intend that as the goal, although I have no
problem with that as a different goal. My intent was to fix the
atrocious failover behavior of the glibc resolver. I also don't mind
using a caching resolver BUT there should be a better stub resolver
that can be widely deployed in a default configuration that doesn't
require a local caching resolver to paper over its deficiencies.
Maybe nscd (and some of the other ideas in the link I posted) are part
of the solution.
Basically, we aren't going to win the war by suggesting that everyone
should run a DNSSEC-validating resolver everywhere. But maybe we can
get widespread consensus for having a lightweight daemon that just
does failover correctly and nothing else fancy so that people won't
mind it running by default on Server, Workstation, Cloud, etc. Maybe
nscd can be that daemon, or maybe something else needs to be written.
Whatever the solution to DNS failover, we should be sure it works
correctly in combination with/doesn't get in the way of full
caching/DNSSEC-validating resolvers, both local and remote, whether
they are installed/enabled by default in various Fedora products or
not.

F21 System Wide Change: Application Installer Continued
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Proposed System Wide Change: Application Installer Continued =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/AppInstallerContinued
Change owner(s): Richard Hughes for the implementation, Ryan Lerch and Allan
Day for the design <rhughes(a)redhat.com>
Fully integrate the new application installer with Fedora, and complete its
feature set.
== Detailed Description ==
gnome-software will support installing system add-ons such as fonts and
codecs. It will show additional metadata for applications: screenshots,
ratings, other details. We will also work with the Fedora infrastructure team
to obtain the metadata online for all applications instead of shipping it
statically for a limited set.
The metadata for application needs to be expanded and its quality monitored.
Screenshots need to be taken or updated.
The update monitoring and downloading functionality will be moved from the
gnome-settings-daemon updates plugin into gnome-software. To implement this,
gnome-software will be turned into a session service, and the updates plugin
will be removed from gnome-settings-daemon.
A gnome-shell search provider will offer installable applications as search
results.
gnome-software will allow to customize the app folders that are displayed in
the gnome-shell app picker.
We will switch to using the hawkey PackageKit backend.
We also want to try to integrate Fedora accounts for collecting ratings and
installed package lists, but this requires coordination with the Fedora
infrastructure team.
The priorities for gnome-software 3.12 are also tracked upstream [1].
== Scope ==
* Proposal owners:
** Add add-on support (DONE)
** Display additional metadata in details page (DONE)
** Implement a GNOME shell search provider (DONE)
** Turn gnome-software into a session service and take over updates plugin
functionality (DONE)
** Implement app folder configuration (DONE)
** Turn search into search-as-you-type
** Implement Fedora account integration
** Replace old gnome-packagekit package installation dialogs (DONE)
** Switch PackageKit to use the hawkey backend (DONE)
* Infrastructure:
** Extract metadata and icons when building packages in koji [2]
** Make metadata available for packaged applications in Fedora
** Make application icons available
** Make application screenshots available
** Make it possible to create Fedora accounts from the client-side
** Allow storing small amount of per-user data for users with a Fedora account
* Application packagers
** Add application metadata to their packages, ideally sending it upstream
* Marketing, documentation
** Assist with review and quality control of application metadata
** Assist with selecting featured applications
* Policies and guidelines:
** We want to use the hawkey backend in PackageKit while the default
commandline utility is still yum; this kind of separation was rejected by
Fesco in the past for zif, will need to ask again (DONE, approved
conditionally)
** The packaging guidelines for applications should be updated to require
application metadata in addition to a desktop file
** The update experience will also benefit from proposed changes to batch
updates, but batched updates are not a strict requirement for the new app
installer

When a yum update sets up an MTA ...
by Lars Seipel
Nicely aligning with the current firewall thread I noticed that one of
my machines was running the exim MTA for the last few days, dutifully
listening on all interfaces.
How did this happen? It turns out that smartmontools intermittently
required 'MTA' which (presumably due to its nice and short name) pulls
in exim when there's no MTA already installed. This dependency was
replaced (with a file dep on %{_sbindir}/sendmail) in
smartmontools-6.2-5.fc20.
Ok, that's how it got installed. But why does it get run? Is the
installation of exim tricking my system into believing it's Debian?
We do have the presets functionality[0] for this, I thought. And indeed,
a call to systemctl preset disables exim.service just like it's supposed
to do.
Looking at exim's spec file shows its %post is using the proper
systemd_post macro which honors presets. In %postun, though, there's a
direct call to systemctl enable, buried in the sysv conversion stuff. Is
it really supposed to be there? But this shouldn't get executed on
package install anyway, right?
Would be glad if someone who knows a bit more about the interaction of
RPM and systemd preset files could chime in and tell me where the bug
report should go.
