Bad file access on the rise
by Steve Grubb
Hello,
Every now and then I look at the distribution to see that from an auditing
perspective the OS is nicely behaving in the absence of intrusion. Meaning we
are not getting audit events unnecessarily. One of the typical rules required
by the DISA STIG is to watch for file access being denied due to permissions.
This could be indicative of someone trying to access something they shouldn't.
The rule is:
-a always,exit -F arch=b64 -S creat -S open -S openat -S truncate -S ftruncate
-F exit=-EPERM -F auid>=500 -F auid!=4294967295 -k access
Lately F18 has been showing lots of audit events where access is being denied
opening a file:
# aureport --start today --key --summary
Key Summary Report
===========================
total key
===========================
537 access
25 module-load
6 container-config
6 system-locale
6 bypass
This is after using the system for 2 hours. Let's see what files were trying to
be accessed:
]# ausearch --start today -k access --raw | aureport --file --summary | head
File Summary Report
===========================
total file
===========================
88 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-838240362
88 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-191856280
88 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-3756395503
7 /dev/shm/pulse-shm-1545675388
6 /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/firefox.png
Let's look at one of these pule-shm events:
# ausearch --start today -k access -f pulse-shm -i --just-one
----

exe=/usr/bin/pulseaudio subj=unconfined_u:system_r:unconfined_t:s0 key=access
So, gdm is creating a file 400 and pulse-audio can't open it. Is it suppose to
be like that?
What about the firefox one?
type=PATH msg=audit(06/07/2013 08:13:52.465:633) : item=0

fsgid=sgrubb ses=2 tty=(none) comm=firefox exe=/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox
subj=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0 key=access
It is using the O_NOATIME flag. To use O_NOATIME requires CAP_FOWNER and firefox
should no have capabilities. So, how bad is the NOATIME problem?
# ausearch --start today -k access -i | grep NOATIME | awk '{ print $30 }' |
~sgrubb/working/BUILD/numeric-tools/summary
exe=/usr/bin/cinnamon 193

exe=/usr/bin/nautilus 10
exe=/usr/bin/xchat 4
exe=/usr/bin/nm-applet 2
exe=/usr/bin/kontact 2
This seems to account for a good number of the problematic accesses. Anything
except backup programs using O_NOATIME is probably thinking they are making
the program faster, but instead is failing to open files.

Heads up: Upcoming python-pillow 2.2 breaks "import _imaging"
by Sandro Mani
Hello all,
As described here [1], the upcoming python-pillow 2.2 will break "import
_imaging", and "from PIL.Image import core as _imaging" should be used
instead). This does not break backwards compatibility with python-pillow
< 2.2.
Python-pillow-2.2 will probably land in rawhide some time next weekend.
In the meantime, maintainers of packages requiring python-imaging or
python-pillow should check if this breakage affects them. The following
quick hacky script [2] shows that the following packages might need to
be adapted:
!! calibre-0:0.9.36-1.fc20.x86_64 may contain _imaging import:
usr/lib64/calibre/calibre/test_build.py: import _imaging,
_imagingmath, _imagingft
usr/lib64/calibre/calibre/test_build.py: _imaging, _imagingmath,
_imagingft
usr/lib64/calibre/calibre/test_build.py: from PIL import
_imaging, _imagingmath, _imagingft
usr/lib64/calibre/calibre/test_build.py: _imaging, _imagingmath,
_imagingft
!! python-reportlab-0:2.5-7.fc19.x86_64 may contain _imaging import:
usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/reportlab/lib/utils.py: for mn
in ('_rl_accel','_renderPM','sgmlop','pyRXP','pyRXPU','_imaging','Image'):

libgd breakage
by Paulo César Pereira de Andrade
Hi,
It is taking a bit too long for some dependencies to be rebuilt
in rawhide.
Could a compat-libgd be provided please? I am receiving daily
mails about broken deps, already posted to $pkg-owner@ asking
what I could help, but still no response neither problems corrected.
Remi Collet told me it appears there are some FTBFS packages in
the cycle.
I would like to also start working on packaging sagemath 5.10,
but am not providing as much time to work on fedora as I would
want, so also not providing a compat-libgd sample package,
sorry...
Thanks,
Paulo

XEN and Fedora-19 domU
by Marcel J.E. Mol
Hi there,
I setup Fedora19-Beta (plus updates) as a XEN server and installed a
Fedora 19 as a domU client.
Unfortunately the domU client failed to boot. After some investigation
it turned out to be the grub.cfg file in the client that caused XEN
pygrub to fail.
The fix is not to difficult and I posted a git patch to the XEN devel list.
This patch might make it into XEN 4.3, but I guess XEN 4.3 will not
be part of Fedora 19.
I guess it would be a shame if Fedora 19 cannot be used as a XEN client so
maybe the patch can be added to the Fedora xen tree?
This is the patch as send to the XEN list:
Date: Sat, 22 Jun 2013 22:33:55 +0200
Subject: [PATCH] pygrub/GrubConf: fix boot problem for fedora 19 grub.cfg
Booting a fedora 19 domU failed because a it could not properly
parse the grub.cfg file. This was cased by
set default="${next_entry}"
This statement actually is within an 'if' statement, so maybe it would
be better to skip code within if/fi blocks...
But this patch seems to work fine.

Fedora Gooey Karma as GSOC project
by Branislav Blaskovic
Hi,
I was chosen as student for Fedora Gooey Karma project in GSOC (Google
Summer of Code).
My proposal [1] is available on fedoraproject wiki page where you can find
main features of this new tool.
I am going to blog about development and progress of FGK on my blog which
will be ready soon :). You will be able to see it on Fedora Planet too.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here on mailing
list, off-list or Brano(a)freenode.org.

Architecture specific header files
by Vít Ondruch
Hi,
Is there some common practice, where to place architecture specific
header files? From output of the following command, I can't see any such
place.
$ `gcc -print-prog-name=cc1` -v
ignoring nonexistent directory
"/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.1/include-fixed"
ignoring nonexistent directory
"/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.1/../../../../x86_64-redhat-linux/include"
#include "..." search starts here:
#include <...> search starts here:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.1/include
/usr/local/include
/usr/include
End of search list.
Actually, the "ignoring nonexistent directory
"/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.1/../../../../x86_64-redhat-linux/include""
might be usable, but is it allowed to use it? Does it conform to FHS
(don't think so). Shouldn't it be configured differently?
The point is, that compilation of this simple program:
$ cat > rt.c
#include "ruby.h"
int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
return 0;
}
^D
fails:
$ gcc rt.c
In file included from /usr/include/ruby.h:33:0,
from rt.c:1:
/usr/include/ruby/ruby.h:24:25: fatal error: ruby/config.h: No such file
or directory
#include "ruby/config.h"
^
compilation terminated.
This should work out of the box IMO, without any configuration or
specification of additional paths etc. The problem is, that Ruby ships
architecture specific config.h header which is not available in GCC's
default search path and I am wondering how to make this work.
Thanks

perl-Test-Kwalitee-1.07-1.fc20
------------------------------
* Sat Jun 29 2013 Paul Howarth <paul(a)city-fan.org> - 1.07-1
- Update to 1.07
- Now the indicators are run in the exact order they are returned from
Module::CPANTS::Kwalitee::*, as some tests depend on the results of
earlier tests
- Synopsis updated to recommend a better way to run this module, ensuring
that it is not run by cpantesters or at installation time
- We no longer create a function in our namespace for every metric we are
going to test; this should not break anyone, as these subs were never
documented as part of the public API
- Switch to Module::Build::Tiny flow
- BR: perl(namespace::clean) for module
- Bump version requirement for perl(Test::CheckDeps) to 0.006
- Don't bother with the extra tests (and their requirements) since
Module::Build::Tiny doesn't provide any convenient method to run them
