As we develop SELinux we are adding new labels to homedir content
by Daniel J Walsh
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
We have added file trans by name rules to policy to fix a lot of
files/directories being created with the correct label.
We have problems on Distribution updates (F16-F17) though, where there is a
files/directories in the homedir that are mislabeled.
We have "restorecond -u" which we run in F15/F16 which examines the homedir
and fixes any files directories it finds mislabeled in ~. If it finds a dir
which is mislabeled, it will relabel the directory and all of its children.
We have turned this tool off by default on the desktop in F17, because
filename transition rules are doing a pretty good job of maintaining the
labels in the homedir. But this tool never did a great job of fixing
mislabeled subdirs, if the top level directory in the homedir was labeled
correctly.
You can enable this tool with /etc/xdg/autostart/restorecond.desktop
One possible fix to this would be to force a system relabel on everything on
upgrades, while this would fix the labels, it is considered to time consuming.
(restorecon -R -v / or touch /.autorelabel)
Another option would be to just relabel /home (# restorecon -R -v /home) at
upgrade time. But this would also be time consuming. And would not catch the
cases where the homedir is not in /home.
A third option would be to run "restorecon -R -v $HOME" in background in an
profile script the first time you login on a new OS Version. This would seem
to be the least time consuming, but could be subject to race conditions, you
hit the mislabeled file before the restorecon fixes it. This would be better
then what we have now, in that everyone can hit the mislabeled file directory.
Final option would be to do nothing, which is what we are doing in F17, until
we get a bug reported and tell the user to run "restorecon -R -v /home"

mounted external ext4 causes "high" kworker cpu
by Chris Murphy
Normally top reports CPU line, sy at 0.4% when idle. If I format an external Firewire disk as btrfs and mount it, it remains at 0.4%. If I reformat as XFS and mount it, again top reports sy at 0.4%. However, if I reformat as ext4 and mount it, sy runs at 3.5%. These two processes are now at the top of top's results:
kworker/1:2
kworker/0:4
Each uses on average 1.9% CPU. The light on the external drive flashes 4x per second. There are no processes using the disk at all while this is going on. If I umount it, the pulsing stops. If I remount it, the pulsing resumes as does the slightly higher CPU consumption.
This doesn't happen with the same hardware mounted XFS or btrfs or HFS+.
Odd?
These reveal nothing related to the disk:
lsof | grep sdb
lsof | mapper
If I sift through it unfiltered with the volume mounted and not, I don't really see anything obvious standing out.

sys/sysctl.h and bits/sysctl.h in rawhide/f18?
by Kaleb S. KEITHLEY
About a week ago I did a scratch build of one of my packages that includes <sys/sysctl.h> and it built successfully.
Today I did another scratch build and it broke with:
...
Making all in src
CC fuse-helpers.lo
CC fuse-resolve.lo
CC fuse-bridge.lo
CC misc.lo
In file included from fuse-helpers.c:24:0:
/usr/include/sys/sysctl.h:63:25: fatal error: bits/sysctl.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
...
Is this a known problem? Some new package I need to add as a BuildRequires?
Thanks

vfsmount mnt_parent element change
by Shelby, James
I'm trying to find out the changes in the kernel relating the 3.2 to 3.3 changes in relation to the vfsmount structure change as we use an application that uses the mnt_parent element that no longer exists in the source. I looked at the Documentation directory for the kernel in Fedora 16 but it has references to mnt_parent still (linux-3.3.7/Documentation/filesystems). I saw a bug reference that has this being moved to the mount structure however I don't get any results with grep on the entire source tree for mnt_parent.
Can anyone point me to a document that has the structure change so that I can modify this source accordingly?
Thanks

How do you use fedpkg chain-build for released Fedorae?
by David Howells
Hi,
I'm having a problem building my cross-compiler gcc package as it requires a
cross-compiler binutils package to be built first.
I managed to build the rawhide build with:
fedpkg chain-build --target=rawhide cross-binutils :
but chain-build doesn't work for F16 and F17 as far as I can tell. If I try
building for F17 without specifying a target, I get:
warthog>fedpkg chain-build cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Packages in destination tag f17-updates-candidate are not inherited bybuild tag f17-build
However, it does let me run:
fedpkg build
in the cross-binutils tree and then the cross-gcc tree independently.
However, the cross-gcc build fails because it can't find the cross-binutils
package to install.
DEBUG util.py:257: Error: No Package found for cross-binutils-common >= 2.22
I've tried giving chain-build a variety of different --target options to see
if that makes the difference, but it doesn't seem to:
fedpkg chain-build --target=f17 cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Packages in destination tag f17-updates-candidate are not inherited bybuild tag f17-build
fedpkg chain-build --target=f17-candidate cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Packages in destination tag f17-updates-candidate are not inherited bybuild tag f17-build
fedpkg chain-build --target=f17-updates cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Unknown build target: f17-updates
fedpkg chain-build --target=f17-updates-candidate cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Unknown build target: f17-updates-candidate
fedpkg chain-build --target=f17-updates-testing cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Unknown build target: f17-updates-testing
fedpkg chain-build --target=fedora-17 cross-binutils :
Could not execute chainbuild: Unknown build target: fedora-17
Can anyone suggest how to do it right?
Thanks,
David

* Wed May 30 2012 Jeffrey Ollie <jeff(a)ocjtech.us> - 10.4.1-1
- The Asterisk Development Team has announced security releases for Certified
- Asterisk 1.8.11 and Asterisk 1.8 and 10. The available security releases are
- released as versions 1.8.11-cert2, 1.8.12.1, and 10.4.1.
-
- These releases are available for immediate download at
- http://downloads.asterisk.org/pub/telephony/asterisk/releases
-
- The release of Asterisk 1.8.11-cert2, 1.8.12.1, and 10.4.1 resolve the following
- two issues:
-
- * A remotely exploitable crash vulnerability exists in the IAX2 channel
- driver if an established call is placed on hold without a suggested music
- class. Asterisk will attempt to use an invalid pointer to the music
- on hold class name, potentially causing a crash.
-
- * A remotely exploitable crash vulnerability was found in the Skinny (SCCP)
- Channel driver. When an SCCP client closes its connection to the server,
- a pointer in a structure is set to NULL. If the client was not in the
- on-hook state at the time the connection was closed, this pointer is later
- dereferenced. This allows remote authenticated connections the ability to
- cause a crash in the server, denying services to legitimate users.
-
- These issues and their resolution are described in the security advisories.
-
- For more information about the details of these vulnerabilities, please read
- security advisories AST-2012-007 and AST-2012-008, which were released at the
- same time as this announcement.
-
- For a full list of changes in the current releases, please see the ChangeLogs:

Re: Couldn't we enable 256 colors by default on TERM?

Yes. If you follow the link to my .bashrc it further clarifies that
to handle all cases, the variable should be set earlier in ~/.profile
or system wide in /etc/profile.d/...

Well that also happens if set in /etc/profile etc.
What you need to do I think is guard like:
$ cat /etc/profile.d/256color.sh
[ "$TERM" = 'xterm' ] && TERM=xterm-256color; export TERM

Handled with the conditional above

This could be contentious.
However I notice (from searching the web) is that Mac OS X
Terminal's default $TERM value is xterm-256color since Lion 10.7.
What I'd do (I will do if you prefer) is to propose the feature at:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/18/FeatureList
That will both provide a todo list and allow voting on acceptance.
Also in the release notes we should have notes for workarounds
for older systems where you would have issues.
I notice ncurses-term is still 'standard' rather than 'required' in debian.
Perhaps we could log a request for that to change?
Note that package is 6.6MB installed so maybe the 256 color support
could be merged back to ncurses-base ?
I just tried ubuntu 12.04 there and it also doesn't install ncurses-term.
I did the following to double check:
$ TERM=xterm-256colors man ls
WARNING: terminal is not fully functional

There is still further issues to consider locally.
screen and vim settings would need to be tweaked also as per:
http://www.robmeerman.co.uk/unix/256colours
cheers,
Pádraig.

Stop the git abuse
by Stanislav Ochotnicky
I've been seeing this ugliness more and more to the point where I just
can't keep writing individual emails. Repeat after me: git is not CVS.
When you have 2 branches with identical content and history (typically
right after branching or when the maintainer is updating all releases
together) then DO NOT manually redo fix for every branch. Do not even
use cherry-pick! Just *merge* for the love of whatever is holy to you.
$ git checkout master (or fedpkg switch-branch)
... do a fix, test, commit, build etc...
$ git checkout f17
$ git merge master
$ git/fedpkg push && fedpkg build
DONE
If the branches are in sync you just saved yourself few minutes. More
importantly you have saved other people like me heap of time because I
will not have to wonder what is different in each branch suddenly. Hint:
in 99% cases nothing. It could still nice linear history. And then there
are those gems where while doing manual fixes you introduce typos and
bugs (yes, it happenes).
Example: http://sochotni.fedorapeople.org/ugly-git-history.png
F16, F17 and rawhide could be the same commmit and just few commits
ahead of F15. But the way it was done, it's not obvious that F17 has a
typo causing problems.
So please. Merge as long as it makes sense (i.e. unless something needs
to be changed specifically in one branch).
Thanks,

Retired libsidplay in Rawhide
by Michael Schwendt
Current situation, F-17:
$ repoquery --whatrequires libsidplay
audacious-plugins-sid-0:3.2.2-1.fc17.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0:0.10.19-1.fc17.i686
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0:0.10.19-1.fc17.x86_64
libsidplay-devel-0:1.36.60-5.fc17.i686
libsidplay-devel-0:1.36.60-5.fc17.x86_64
ocp-0:0.1.20-8.fc17.1.x86_64
So, only three packages are still using the library:
- audacious-plugins-sid is a fully optional plug-in package
- gstreamer-plugins-ugly is from RPM Fusion Free
- ocp is an ancient audio player from the DOS era [1]
libsidplay v2 has taken over many years ago, but could not and still
cannot be included with Fedora for legal reasons (copyright issues related
to "kernal ROM" and "Microsoft Basic ROM" images). An Audacious plug-in
using the v2 lib can be provided by a 3rd party repo, too.
There's also a more recent libsidplayfp project, a forked libsidplay2 that
aims at improving the implementation in various ways (e.g. making it
thread-safe). It also cannot be included with Fedora because of the same
ROM image problems.
Those files cannot simply be dropped as they are strictly needed at
run-time. They are essential to the default capabilities of the more
modern libsidplay2 code base. Only theoretically, it would be possible to
modify the implementation and treat the ROM images as optional, but
someone to do that is missing. And without the ROM images, libsidplay2
would be less capable.
And "less capable" here means that a full-featured libsidplay2 is needed
to handle existing files that the old libsidplay v1 cannot handle either.
The file format of those files (an enhanced PSID header) has been
introduced many years ago with libsidplay2. libsidplay v1 cannot and will
not be able to handle those files ever.
Conclusively, IMO it's time to retire libsidplay v1 beginning with
Fedora 18.
[1] "ocp" even has failed to play .sid files 2010-08-20 (bug 625885) and
the bug is still open, as the Fedora package doesn't seem to be
well-maintained enough to merge the upstream fix that has been
announced in that ticket on 2011-11-02. Even a new upstream release has
been made two weeks later.
