Moving lspci and setpci from /sbin to /usr/sbin?
by Michal Hlavinka
Hi all,
in Fedora we have pciutils binaries (lspci and setpci) in /sbin, both of them
use pciutils-libs (/usr/lib/...) and afaik this is how it works for "ages".
I'd like to move them from /sbin to /usr/sbin to have them with the same prefix
as library has. Do you think it can break anything?
A few facts:
1)library is already in /usr/lib and lspci/setpci won't work without it
2)pci.ids (lives in hwdata package) is in /usr/share/hwdata
3)yum remove pciutils will remove only system-config-{firewall,network} as
dependencies
Do you think moving this is a bad idea? I think it should not break anything,
only problem can be with separate /usr partition but because of library in
/usr it would be already broken and I've not seen any complain about it ever.
If there are no complains, I'll move it next week (in rawhide only).
Cheers,
Michal Hlavinka

Would you use a programming language with missing features?
by Paulo Cavalcanti
I always say one should not blame the system (OS, language, whatever) for
his/her
programming mistakes.
Unfortunately, Fedora has presently two programming languages with
missing features, and the user maybe completely unaware of this.
The first one is python. The GUI provided with python is called tkinter,
which is based on tk, which, in turn, is based on tcl. Since threads are
disabled in Fedora's tcl,
as a consequence, one cannot use python+tkinter+threads.
I believe there are hundreds of computer courses, based on python, around
the world.
But maybe threads are a minor subject, and can be just forgotten ...
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2009-August/msg00462.html
I am not saying the points raised in the above link are not important, but
the solution is pretty obvious to me.
The second language is called Lazarus, a clone of the indefectible* *Delphi.
Lazarus is based on fpc (Free Pascal), and for a long time, Firebird was the
only database
which could be used reliably via Lazarus components. In Fedora 10, finally,
mysql 5.0 started
to work via components, but this is no longer true in Fedora 12, which ships
mysql 5.1:
Fortunately, the fix is easy:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=554984
Database components are the only reason one would like to use an old
environment, such as Lazarus, in my opinion.
I hope someone can address these issues, which certainly affect a lot of
people.
Thanks.

FC12: Hidden files in /usr/bin/*
by Ralf Corsepius
Hi,
On FC12 I found this:
# ls /usr/bin/.*.hmac
/usr/bin/.fipscheck.hmac
/usr/bin/.ssh.hmac
# rpm -qf /usr/bin/.*.hmac
fipscheck-1.2.0-4.fc12.x86_64
openssh-clients-5.2p1-31.fc12.x86_64
Could somebody provide some insight what these files are (I guess some
checksums) and why they are being installed to /usr/bin?
Packaging bug ?

[RFC PATCH] use sulogin in single-user mode
by Bill Nottingham
We have an existing bug where if you're in single-user mode, and
SELinux is active, various commands don't print to the console.
The root of this is the single-user shell isn't running in the
right SELinux context, as there's nothing to distinguish this from
the 'normal' shells run during bootup.
By far, the simplest fix is to run something that starts a shell
via a 'normal' login-ish mechanism. Hence, the attached patch
that switches to sulogin for single user mode.
However, this changes behavior that has existed since the dawn
of time in Red Hat/Fedora systems; with this change, single-user
mode would now require the root password. This is both when
booting with 'linux single/linux S', or going to runlevel 1
with 'telinit 1'.

burning an iso with gnome defaults -> confusing
by Rudolf Kastl
Hello
Burning an iso file with gnome is really confusing even for a technical user:
1. i insert a blank
2. i right click on an iso in nautilus and choose burn to cd/dvd
-> so far so good
3. i get a new window stating how much free space the blank has (but
in reality it already substracted the space beeing used by the iso you
want to burn)
-> this leaves the impression that the cd/dvd isnt really a blank
because it doesent tell you that it is the free space _after_ the burn
4. after burning if device polling is disabled (a typical setting for
laptops if you want to save power) it will tell you "burning failed"
while the burning itsself didnt fail at all, all that fails is
actually to poll the device...
-> confusing
there is lots to do on the usability front... like e.g. trying the stuff out ;)
kind regards,
Rudolf Kastl
p.s. this is not a problem for me but for other potential users with
less technical understanding

Draft privilege escalation policy for comments
by Adam Williamson
Hi, everyone. Since the big PackageKit brouhaha surrounding Fedora 12,
there's been a discussion surrounding the need for a policy about
privilege escalation in Fedora. Representing the QA group, we would like
for there to be such a policy in order to allow a meaningful review of
privilege escalation issues as part of QA's testing of Fedora releases.
I took this concern to FESco, who basically said they would be willing
to consider any policy that's brought to them, but won't initiate the
creation of one. I have asked the security list (which seems mostly
dormant), some security folks individually, and it's been discussed on
this list, but none of those seem to have been interested in actually
creating a policy. So in the end, QA decided we would propose a draft.
We realize this is entirely out of our area of expertise, but there
appeared to be no alternative. So, here's a draft policy for review.
This has been through three rounds of drafts within the QA group, and
includes content based on very useful feedback from members of Red Hat's
security team, particularly Miloslav Trmac. Thanks to him and to all
others who contributed to the QA group discussion.
Please do provide any and all feedback on the proposed policy. if we can
get it into a shape which most people on the list would find acceptable,
my next step will be to take it back to FESco for them to review.
Thanks.
You can find the draft policy at
