I wanted to open a discussion for F12 about running services on shell accounts.
by Daniel J Walsh
I would like to run restorecond as a user service rather then as system
service. I want to run it under the Users UID and under with the users
context.
Then I can have it watch for creation of files in the users home
directory and be the equivalent of running restorecon ~/ by the user.
Currently I can do this with the system service restorecond, but that is
running as root and has to be able to relabel everything.
I want to use something like DBUS so I have only one restorecond running
for each user no matter how many times the user logs in.
I built a dbus service and everything works fine. Except that I want
this to work on a server when I ssh to a machine. Or if I log in via
the console terminal. In those cases I do not have a dbus session so I
am out of luck.
I could have restorecond started via /etc/profile.d but I would need to
do something for csh and bash, and I could end up with multiple
restorecond under the same UID. I could build into restorecond some
kind of locking to prevent this, but the dbus solution eliminates me
from having to do some potentially buggy code.
I doubt I am the only one who wants to run sessions on login for
terminal users. Any thoughts on running a dbus session for a terminal
session?

just lost my pipe
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
as you might know, on german keyboards, the | symbol is created by
pressing AltGr and the key right to the shift key.
In my last session on my f11 thinkpad (r61) I just lost that symbol.
AltGr - <ANYOTHERKEY> worked, so did < and > on that key. Only | was
gone. Reboot fixed that.
Any idea what subsytem (kernel, X) to blame for that? Any idea what I
can do to dig deeper into this?
regards
christoph

Packaging python bits with setuptools that depend on non-distutil packages
by Yaakov Nemoy
Hey List,
I'm working on a couple of projects to get them to use setuptools, but i've come across an interesting dillema. Some core systems modules, such as dbus and rpm aren't normally provided as eggs, because they are built as part of the build process of the original C code. This yields two issues.
1) I cannot use virtualenv to test these packages in a clean room. I like to test things in as clean of an area as possible, and sometimes it's difficult to figure out what i've installed might be modifying some expected behavior. Virtualenv let's you build very light weight containers for testing python code in, but without distutils, it's hard to run some setup script or rely on easy_install to provide the needed bits.
2) How do we normally declare dependencies on these components in setuptools? If i were to push the package i'm making to the Python Cheese shop, it would depend on something the user may not actually have installed. How do i go about declaring these dependencies?
To make a short story long, i'm sure there are ways to include code snippets in dbus, rpm, and possibly other packages that also generate egg info. This would at least let me declare those packages as dependencies. The bigger issue i have though, is how can i import them in some generic fashion into virtualenv?
Please advise.

Long and contentious discussion about concerns with the VolumeControl
feature. FESCo decided to get gnome-alsamixer packaged and added to the
default desktop live/install spins to allow users whos use cases are
not covered currently by VolumeControl to have a GUI way to adjust
mixer settings. Hopefully this will be dropped/revisited in F12.
