Package updates not replaced by newer package in -testing
by Jonathan Dieter
A few days ago, I built deltarpm-3.4-18.fc11 which resplit off a
subpackage that had accidentally been merged into the main package in
deltarpm-3.4-17.fc11. I pushed -18 into -testing, and assumed (since it
was newer than -17) that -17 wouldn't get pushed to stable
automatically.
Now I've just received an email from koji saying that -17 has been
pushed to updates from updates-testing. I've just pushed -18 into
updates, but is there any way to avoid a one or two day delay where -17
makes it into updates before -18 does?

Retiring gai, gai-temp, gai-pal
by Michael Schwendt
The current thread on "ksensors, id3lib" has reminded me to give
gnome-applet-sensors another try right now. In F11. It works for me
while that hasn't been true before (troubles with acpi thrm or
no sensors).
As a result, I'd like to retire GAI (General Applet Interface Library)
and two of the applets that are in the Fedora Package Collection:
gai-temp
gai-pal
gai
There has not been any new release since 2005. Several patches
have been mailed upstream, but later without any response. No other
GAI applets have ever been included in the Fedora Package Collection.
I plan to keep the packages only for F-11 and F-10, but not for F-12 and
newer.

TeXLive 2009 autoprovides/autorequires
by Ben Boeckel
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256
Hi,
I upgraded to F12 recently and enabled the TeXLive 2009
packages. One thing that the massive split has created is that
package dependencies are not made at all. I had to manually
install some packages to satisfy some dependencies. I created
these (rudimentary) .prov and .req scripts (attached) to try and
kickstart something.
As they are, they don't do versioning yet (seems that some
packages do versioning with LaTeX commands) nor does it support
\RequirePackage being split over multiple lines (similar with
\ProvidesPackage). I also may not be handling all of the
possibilities of where the provides and requires information may
be in the files.

Retiring ksensors, possibly id3lib as well?
by Lyos Gemini Norezel
Greetings all...
I believe the time has come to retire ksensors.
The last update/release was 18/08/2004, and it appears upstream has been
defunct since at least that time.
Unless there are objections voiced and/or a maintainer steps forward before
Oct 9 (Friday), I will go ahead and retire this package.
id3lib also needs to be looked at, as it's upstream has been defunct
since March 2 2003.
This one might hurt more than ksensors will, since several programs
depend on id3lib.
This is a list of the programs that require id3lib:
audio-convert-mod
easytag
tagtool
id3lib-devel
id3v2
gmediaserver
liblicense-modules
kid3
grip
The list is alot shorter than I thought it would be, but it's still
enough to cause problems.
Is there anyone willing to take up upstream development of id3lib?
Is there a possible (more active) replacement for id3lib?
Is there a valid reason for continuing to carry such a defunct package
in Fedora?
I'm more than happy to continue maintaining id3lib if there is a valid
reason to do so,
but my reasons are more sentimental than valid logical reasoning.
So I turn to you to answer that question:
Is there valid, logical, reasoning to continue to support such old code?

Interesting post on future RPM changes
by Adam Williamson
Hope I'm not pre-empting Seth or anyone here, but I thought it worth
pointing out a very interesting blog post on planned future changes to
RPM:
http://stick.gk2.sk/blog/2009/10/rpm-summit-at-the-opensuse-conference-2009/
it lists several changes that were agreed in principle at a conference
between several Novell and Red Hat people. There's some stuff in there
which looks like it will likely lead to changes in Fedora packaging
policies once it's implemented, so if you want to get ahead of the
future it's a useful read =)

Opinions on packaging ATLAS (for the x86 architecture)
by Deji Akingunola
Hi all,
I would like to know your opinion (or any guideline, if it exists) for
the best way to package the ATLAS library for the x86 arch ATM. ATLAS
(Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software) basically provides
lapack and blas libraries tuned and optimized for specific cpu
instruction sets, and speed-ups derived from it are very significant.
The library is mostly used for scientific applications, but I've heard
gnome-games also uses it to enhance one of its games.
Currently its packaging for Fedora on the x86_32 arch creates 3
variants (sub-packages) based on the SSE instruction sets -
atlas-sse(1), atlas-sse2, and atlas-sse3, and just recently we gained
the ability to build it for CPUs without SSE. I am trying to decide
which variant to provide as the default one that would be picked to
satisfy atlas library dependency out of the following 2 possibilities;
i). Create a generic x86 'atlas' main package for the P6 architecture,
which is a non-SSE and minimum CPU that Fedora can support ATM.
atlas-sse, atlas-sse2, and atlas-sse3 would then be sub-packages that
users will have to specifically install to benefit from the atlas
optimizations.
ii). According to smolt statistics, cpus with speeds <= 512 MHz (which
is a superset of the non-SSE P6 architecture) is only 0.8% of Fedora
install-base, and cpus with speed >2 GHz (which are subset of SSE2
capable cpus)
are more than 58%. Therefore to support the majority, the main 'atlas'
package will be the sse2 variants, which will provides 'atlas-sse2'
and there will be sub-packages for atlas-no_sse, atlas-sse, and
atlas-sse3.
I personally favour the second option, as I think most people just
installing 'atlas' (who might not have seen the package descriptions)
will likely get the better optimized variant. Right now the
'atlas-sse2' subpackage provides 'atlas', but yum will select the
'atlas-sse' subpackage to satisfy library dependence for libatlas
(shortest name win scenario).
Thanks for your contribution.

2010.
We are looking for proposals from any Free Software distribution, from the
typical full distributions (both linux and non-linux) to the niche market
derivatives.
In spite of the strong focus on collaboration between Free Software
distributions, topics may include packaging, maintenance, relationship with
upstream developers, release management and QA.
For more informtion, please visit: http://distrosummit.org.
Important dates
===============
* Call for papers ends: Wednesday 18 October 2009

your proposal.
Submit a proposal
=================
To submit your proposal, we'll need the following information:
* Your name, contact details and a short biography;
* Your proposal title;
* Intended audience;

About the Distro Summit
=======================
The Distro Summit 2010 is a one-day developer conference with a strong focus on
collaboration between free software distributions hosted at the linux.conf.au
2010 (http://www.lca2010.org.nz). In addition to a schedule of technical,
social and policy talks, the Distro Summit provides an opportunity for
developers, contributors and other interested people to meet in person and work
together more closely.
Previous similar events have featured speakers from around the world. They have
also been extremely beneficial for developing key free software software
components and for improving collaboration and sharing between the different
distributions.
Target Audience
===============
The Distro Summit is (mainly) a technical event, but this does not mean that
the only target audience are developers and maintainers of free software
distributions: the event will feature talks that range from the development to
real-world use cases, going through marketing and the social aspects of the
maintenance of free software distributions.
