Fedora fonts SIG pre-freeze status
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi all,
I've updated our status page
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fonts_inclusion_history
While we've still not quite reached the F9 addition volume, things are
starting to look not too bad. It would be nice to reach the 40 new
packages mark by F10 release time.
This page is intended to be referenced in release notes, so each new
font needs to be described properly. Right now:
— icelandic fonts and smc fonts have no wiki page
— darkgarden, sportrop and thibault fonts have unfinished pages
⇒ please fix
Additionnaly the plan is still to bump fontforge to the latest version
just before next week's freeze (and rebuild dependant fonts). Please
make sure your packages are ready for rebuild by then.
Regards,

Time to resurrect multi-key signatures in RPM?
by Bojan Smojver
In the light of recent RPM signing intrusions, maybe we should resurrect
the RPM feature where multiple signatures are allowed (i.e. --addsign is
different to --resign)? With this we could then require N good
signatures (and no bad ones) on each package before yum would trust the
content.
What I'm getting at with this is distributed package signing, which
would make the job of breaking the trust much harder for attackers, as
they would have to crack private keys of many people around the world in
order to subvert Fedora packages.
For instance, an attacker being in the position of injecting a bad
package and signing it with Fedora key would still get nowhere, as he'd
need to convince other signatories to sign those packages before them
being any threat to Fedora users. Before signing, signatories could
require that original contributor that built the package for a
particular tag sends a signed e-mail (containing that tag and package
checksums - valid only once) to the signatories, therefore requiring yet
another compromised private key in order to perform an attack.
Signatories could also use alternative build systems with no public
access (e.g. their own, Matt's at Dell etc.) to verify package checksums
before signing, in order to avoid trusting a compromised Fedora build
system.
This would require more distributed resources and would slow the update
process down somewhat, but may avoid single point of intrusion as being
sufficient to break the distro.

ext4 testing in the F10 release cycle
by Eric Sandeen
Hi all -
Just my semiannual plea for some ext4 testing in the Fedora beta cycle.
ext4 was a feature goal for F9, and it was close; it was relegated to a
secret-anaconda-handshake "iamanext4developer" to enable it for install
- largely due to lack of ext4 support in e2fsprogs.
With the e2fsprogs-1.41.0 release in F10, we now have an ext4-capable
e2fsprogs, with working fsck, debugfs, etc as well as mkfs.ext4 and
mkfs.ext4dev to enable the new disk format features by default.
For F10, the barrier to entry has been lowered by 14 characters - now
all you have to type on the boot prompt is "ext4" :) and when you go to
the custom partitioning screen, you'll get the option to create ext4
filesystems at install time.
I'd appreciate any and all testing, benchmarking & feedback that people
would be willing to do. Just getting more exposure in real-life
scenarios would be great.
As with any filesystem, I wouldn't put your only copy of your most
precious data on it - use good sense about backups etc - but ext4 has
made good progress since F9 on both stability and performance, so have
at it!
Thanks,
-Eric

Help Needed: Figure out F9 Updates PackageKit deps
by Warren Togami
Hi folks,
Here is an easy task that someone could do to help us get new Fedora
Updates flowing.
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/rel-eng/2008-August/001627.html
To aid in transition to the new key, Step 3 has the oldrepo of F9
Updates cleaned of all packages except tiny few to enable transition to
the new key. The old F9 Updates repo is to contain the transitional
fedora-release, and the current stable version of PackageKit, both
signed by the old key and all other packages removed.
The goal here is for any F9 pre-newkey install or Live install to be
able to automatically upgrade into the new PackageKit. This is because
the original PackageKit shipped in F9 was unable to ask the user if they
want to import a new GPG key.
Could someone figure out what is the minimum set of Fedora 9 packages
needed to keep in the repo to allow an upgrade from F9 original release?

Horrible memory leak in rawhide (kernel leak?)
by Erik van Pienbroek
Hi,
The last few days I've had a horrible memory leak on Rawhide. The
problem is: I can't find out what's causing it. According to 'top' there
aren't any userspace processes which are using lots of memory, but
according to 'slabtop' there is 'kmalloc-32' which is using excessive
amounts of memory. This looks like something in the kernel to me.
Killing services or the whole X server don't help in getting the memory
released.
The strange thing is I'm having this leak on 2 individual computers with
completely different hardware (one is a desktop, the other is a
notebook).
This leak makes my systems unusable after some time (due to all
userspace processes being put in the swap). The leak itself seems to be
dependent on the user activity. If I leave the computer mostly idle
(just Evolution and X-Chat running in the background) the leak isn't as
bad as when there's lots a activity. If I play a game (using wine) for
example, I need to reboot after a few hours because there's no memory
left for userspace processes (everything is being swapped).
Is there anybody else here who is also encountering this strange leak?
Of does anybody have an idea how to make a proper diagnosis about this
problem?
My desktop is an Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 1GB ram

As you can see both the computers contain an nVidia video card. Before
blaming the propetiary nVidia drivers, only my notebook uses those, so
the problem probably isn't in those drivers.
I've tried several different Rawhide kernels (from 2.6.27-0.208.rc1.git2
to the latest of today) but they all have the same problem.
I've managed to save the output of slaptop and the contents
of /proc/slabinfo when the memory usage was horrible again. Maybe
someone can find some useful information in them. They are published at
http://ftd4linux.nl/contrib/slabtop and
http://ftd4linux.nl/contrib/slabinfo

Using lzma compressed tarball as Source0
by Till Maas
Hiyas,
are there some best practices or some secret macros I can redifine to use a
lzma compressed tarball as Source0 for Fedora 8+ specs?
It would help if I could pass --use-compress-program=lzma to the tar
commandline that %setup uses.

wtf ... Something strips installed binaries???
by Richard W.M. Jones
I installed a binary from an RPM last night. Here's what I installed:
# rpm -qlvp ~rjones/rpmbuild/RPMS/i386/ocsigen-1.1.0-3.fc10.i386.rpm | grep /usr/bin
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2294198 Sep 1 23:32 /usr/bin/ocsigen
This morning:
# ll /usr/bin/ocsigen
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 298908 2008-09-01 23:32 /usr/bin/ocsigen
This stipped binary is broken -- these binaries must NEVER be stripped!
/var/log/prelink/prelink.log shows that prelink did something to the
binary, but shows no errors.
(1) What is stripping installed binaries?
(2) How do I tell automated cron jobs NOT to interfere with installed
binaries?
Rich.
PS. Personally I think the idea of having cronjobs which modify system
files under /usr in-place is totally crack. If prelinking is
genuinely useful, save the extra prelink data into a /var file.

virt-p2v converts physical machines to virtual machines. Boot with a
live CD or over the network (PXE) and turn machines into Xen guests.
