dbus problems
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I seem to be having some rather large problems with my x86 laptop. It looks
like there is a problem with dbus somewhere.
What happened was this. Last week, I ran file-roller as sudo to copy
something into /usr/local. For some reason, most of the applets vanished and
it looked like a gconf error. Everything hung. I restarted X, but all I got
was the mouse pointer and the animated circle things.
I restarted the machine and lots of things went wrong. avahi, mysql, httpd
and haldaemon all fail to start. If I try to login, all I get is a message
that there is no /home directory for a particular user.
I can log in as root.
If I try gconftool2 --spawn, everything seems fine.
If I try to start haldaemon with /etc/init.d/haldaemon restart, it fails
If I try to start mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysqld restart, I get a timed out
error
If I try to run lshal, all I get it
error: dbus_bus_get: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoServer: Failed to connect
to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: Connection refused
Any suggestions on what to look for or alter? I'm running rawhide and
updated today.
TTFN

kdebindings -> PyKDE4 split
by Rex Dieter
kdebindings currently includes bindings for many languages, including
python, ruby, etc, and currently bundled all together into a single
monolithic package. The KDE SIG will be working to split these out
(where it makes sense). The first one is python, which has been split
into it's own PyKDE4 package (should land in the next rawhide iteration).
This split will propogate back to F-9 when kde-4.1 is released (late
July-ish)

Someone please take over these packages
by Jarod Wilson
For a variety of reasons, I have to entirely give up involvement in a number
of packages. I've already tried to find new primary maintainers without
success, but I really can't justify any time spent on these packages any
longer, so I must orphan them ASAP, and hopefully, someone picks them up...
emerald (compiz-fusion alternate windowing thingamajig)
emerald-themes (themes for the above)
ganglia (cluster monitoring software)
numpy (numerical python)
I've also got the following packages for which I've yet to solicit new
maintainers for that I am also intending to orphan Real Soon Now:
conman (console management software)
connect-proxy (helper to use ssh through socks/squid proxy)
dircproxy (detachable irc proxy)
powerman (power management software)
I'll keep myself on the cc for bugzillas for all of the above, and will try to
help with any bugs filed, personal free time permitting. Most of these are
relatively low on time investment required to maintain them, but volume adds
up, particularly given that I only actually use two of these packages on any
sort of regular basis these days (conman and dircproxy).

Heads Up! Wavpack soname bump
by Peter Lemenkov
Hello All!
I just prepared to update wavpack to latest version (4.50). Among some
bugfixes it introduces minor soname-bump (
/usr/lib/libwavpack.so.1.0.1 >> /usr/lib/libwavpack.so.1.0.2 )
Keeping in mind my infamous upgrade of Xerces-C from 2.7.0 to 2.8.0, I
decided to secure against similar issues and want to ask - whether
someone has objections against this upgrade? If not, then I'll upgrade
wavpack ASAP.

installer leaves kernel to late in process...
by Development discussions related to Fedora
Is there a legit reason that a basic anaconda install would install
about 600 out of 900 packages, before installing the actual kernel ?
If something goes wrong during install, and the installer hasn't at
least installed the kernel and boot loader, user can be left in the
crud. Preferably this would also include rpm and yum to be early installs...
Is this a disk location optimization ?
Would it be better for kernel to be the first thing on the disk {at
least to get started - it going to change down the line anyway} ?

incoming potential breakage in rawhide.
by Dave Jones
Tomorrows rawhide enables something we've been saying
"Hey, we should do that" for about 3-4 releases now.
By default, booting up will enable glibc's malloc perturbing.
* Apps that expect allocated memory to be zeroed which are calling
malloc() instead of calloc() will break.
* Apps using memory after it's been free()'d will break.
All somewhat akin to the alloc debugging we enable in the kernel each rawhide.
This will cause currently silent bugs to make apps abort() instead.
There's slight performance overhead, but hey, it's rawhide, we'll
turn it off again later.
You'll be able to turn it off in /etc/sysconfig/mcheck
But, if stuff starts breaking left and right for you, don't just
disable this, please file bugs!
There's one known bug which has been outstanding for a while,
which is guaranteed to hit any fedora committer using x86-64.
'make upload' causes curl to break..
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429175
Hopefully we can finally get this fixed this release.

Reviewer needed for haddock09
by Bryan O'Sullivan
The latest, greatest version of GHC, the Glasgow Haskell Compiler, is set to
be released within the next few days. I've got a spec file ready to build it
with, save for one thing: the current version of Haddock (Haskell
documentation extractor tool) doesn't work with it.
I've revived an older, compatible version of Haddock as the haddock09
package. This is almost exactly the same package that we used to ship in the
Fedora 7 era.
The package needs no special Haskell expertise to review, and it will
shortly block my ability to update GHC. If some kind soul would be willing
to do a quick review on it, I'll gladly return the favour.

Cheers.
