Application for GSoC Project - Package WebUI
by Pavel Khardikov
Hi, Thorsten!
I'm interested in the GSoC Package WebUI project idea.
I am well acquainted with the basic principles and methods of working
with repoview and pkgdb.
I have a desire to make a site that provides information on all packages
and has convenient tools for searching, grouping, resolving
dependencies, etc...
I consider that the best variant for development of the new application
is the use or improvement repoview or pkgdb.
I think that http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages are very convenient and
functional tools.
I have a good experience in user interface design and development of web
applications:
-- scripting languages: perl, python, php and the popular frameworks for
them, like Catalyst, Django and ZendFramework
-- XML, HTML / XHTML, CSS, semantic and cross-browser making-up
-- graphic tools
What is the main criteria for application?

[RFC]InstantMirror Redesign
by Kulbir Saini
Hi all!
InstantMirror currently works fine but involves a lot of configuration and
that might actually stop someone from use it. I came across this project
recently and found it really interesting. After reading the discussions on
fedora-devel, warren's journal, InstantMirror wiki, I thought that I would
come up with a redesign that would be more yum friendly and will involve
minimal configuration for setup. Below is my point of view of new
InstantMirror design.
Note: You can access the design proposal here
(http://iyum.saini.co.in/index.php/InstantMirror) also.
Redesign Proposal
*****************
Basically the most obvious use case of InstantMirror is to be used by Yum
for updates. I propose to develop InstantMirror keeping in mind that it
should integrate with Yum. In the new design I am using not multiple
programs to get the job done as proposed by warren here
(https://fedorahosted.org/InstantMirror/wiki/InstantMirrorDaemon). There
will be only one daemon that will continuously listen to requests and if
necessary it will fork itself. Below is the method of operation for the
daemon.
Method of Operation
*******************
1. InstantMirror gets a client request for a URL.
2. Check: if URL is not in (RPM, metadata file)
* Then its none of our business.
* Let proxy handle it the normal way.
* Done and exit.
3. Error Check: if remote host is not reachable
* Check: if RPM/metadata is available in cache
1. Stream the RPM/metadata from cache.
2. Done and exit.
* else
1. Throw a "No route to host" error.
2. Done and exit.
4. Check: if RPM/metadata is available in cache
* Check: if RPM/metadata in cache is older than upstream
1. Delete RPM/metadata from cache.
2. Download and stream.
3. Done and exit.
* Check: if RPM/metadata matches upstream or newer than upstream
1. Stream the RPM/metadata from cache.
2. Done and exit.
* Check: if RPM/metadata does not exsit upstream
1. Delete RPM/metadata from cache.
2. Throw a "Not found" error.
3. Done and exit.
5. Check: if RPM/metadata is not available in cache
* Download and stream.
* Done and exit.
Download Process
****************
In the above operation everything is clear except the download process. If
a file is already being downloaded from upstream and another client
request come in for the same file, then we have two options to continue
downloading
1. Download via only first instance (master) and let the other instances
(slaves) copy the partial content to the client. The disadvantage is that
the slaves will be throttled by the master's download speed.
2. The other instance also starts downloading from upstream and append
data to the local file. Stream the data to clients when download is
finished. This is quite complicated and as of now I don't even know how to
do it or even if its feasible to do it.
I am currently trying to get the hang of downloading process.
The above design is more or less same as the previous design with may be a
bit of improvements. Now, we have decided to have two types of
InstantMirror.
1. InstantMirror to be used by a small group of people. In this case we
have to get rid of all the dependencies like squid, apache because for a
small setup nobody is going to configure squid and apache. So, we use a
proxy server implemented in python for this kind of setup and integrate
InstantMirror with it in caching mode. So that it becomes easy to setup
and don't require squid, apache or whatever else.
2. InstantMirror to be used by an organization. As almost all the
organization ( i am focusing more on institutes/universities here) use a
common proxy server to access the Internet, we will have the InstantMirror
which can be integrated with squid. There will be no difficulty in setup
as the people already use squid (assuming squid is widely used in
Unix/Linux world) and know how to configure it. We can't use proxy server
implemented in python here because no organization would ever agree to use
a stripped down version of proxy server instead of squid.
If the above sounds interesting, then I also propose to build a Yum plugin
(say Yum Client) which will interact with InstantMirror sitting near the
proxy server. Yum Client will periodically update the InstantMirror with
the information like which packages are very frequently updated by user
(kernel, kde, yum), which packages are never updated or updated rarely
(vim). Using this information InstantMirror will optimize the download
queue and using some very simple techniques for queuing a download etc.,
we can optimize the bandwidth usage.
Imagine a university with thousands of Linux users and everyone is
updating their system weekly. GBs of bandwidth is being wasted every week
due to subsequent downloads of the same package.
If you have any suggestions for improvements, comments on the current
design or you want to criticize the design, please reply back. They would
really help me to improve.

"10" < "9": Get rid of string comparisons in time for F-10?
by Hans Ulrich Niedermann
On #fedora-devel, the issue of comparing Fedora versions by string
comparison just came up. With F-10 on the way, this will be the first
time when string comparing versions will fail in a "10" < "7" way.
The case in question was a classic older %if "%{?fedora}" > "7", which
should be changed to %if 0%{?fedora} > 7, as Rex Dieter and Christopher
Stone have pointed out:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/DistTag#head-1c550109af0705ccb713...
Where else but in spec files may similarly wrong string comparisons be
happening? Is a systematic effort required to fix these comparisons in
the run-up to F-10?

rhgb no more
by Ray Strode
Hi guys,
One thing you will soon notice in F10 rawhide is that rhgb is no
longer around. We've blocked it and plan on replacing it for F10.
This is a continuation of our "BetterStartup" feature from a few
Fedoras ago (I would post a link but the wiki seems to be down). The
replacement for rhgb will be a mixture of two things:
1) Starting gdm as early as possible and fitting it to give boot
progress before asking for login. This is somewhat in line with the
early-login prototype feature some of you may remember from several
fedora releases ago.
2) Hiding boot messages before gdm unless escape key is pressed. For
graphics hardware that has drm modesetting, we'll be able to show some
sort of pretty graphics, and for everyone else we'll show a very
simple text mode progress.
Just a heads up,
Ray

Werewolf -> Sulphur -> <blank>? Sulphur is a <blank>, <NewName> is a <blank>
by Josh Boyer
Let the naming begin! We're starting very early this time around in
the name game for F10. So, let the suggestions flow!
Remember the rules:
1) <NewName> must have some link to Sulphur
More specifically, the link should be
Sulphur is a <blank> and
<NewName> is a <blank>
Where <blank> is the same for both
2) The link between <NewName> and Sulphur cannot be the same as between
Werewolf and Sulphur. That link was "things that react badly with
silver".
I will be collecting suggestions for 1 week, so the cutoff for names is:
May 29, 2008
Suggestions will be run through the legal queue and an election will
happen for Fedora contributors to pick the next Fedora name.

Let's make a plan for python3.0 in Fedora 10+
by Toshio Kuratomi
The python programming language is going to be releasing a new version
sometime around the time of the Fedora 10 release. Unlike past
releases, this one will have wide-spread backwards incompatibility in
the python language itself. We need to think about how we want to pull
the new language into the distribution and porting of existing
apps/modules. Here's a proposal to start us off but I hope geppetto
(the python maintainer) and ivazquez (who maintains python3.0 packages
in his spare time[1]_) will weigh in with their thoughts.
.. _[1]: http://ivazquez.fedorapeople.org/packages/python3000/
== Proposal ==
* We should review and add the python3000 package to Fedora devel ASAP
so people can work out any bugs with the packaging before F10 release.
* python3000 will not be in the default install for F10. It should not
conflict in any way with the python-2.x package we ship. We should not
port our system tools (system-config-*, anaconda, yum, etc) to
python3000 for F10.
* In F10 modules should not be shipped for python3000 unless upstream is
taking patches for python3000/has a python3000 compatible release branch.
* python3000 modules should have a separate namespace from python2.x
modules. The packaging committee will need to decide on that
(python3-foo, python3000-foo, python3k-foo are possibilities.
python3.0-foo should not be considered as 3.x versions should not have
the same backwards incompatibilities that 2.x->3.x has.)
* Porting to python3000 will occur at some point but that should be a
post-Fedora 10 feature that we decide on after python-3.0 final has been
released. We will also need to discuss whether to port our tools
piecemeal or altogether at that time and to what extent (if any) we will
allow splitting from any upstreams that only support python-2.x.
== Rationale and Notes ==
* python3000 is backwards incompatible with python2.x. Unicode strings,
print becoming a function, exception changes, removal of old-style
classes, and many other changes will prevent nearly all python2.x
programs and modules from functioning in python3000 without source code
changes. In this way, it is practically a new language.
* Porting to python3.0 as a whole distro will take a significant amount
of time. Being able to break that up and work with upstreams to port
smaller portions at a time will aid us in focusing effort where it's needed.
* python2.6.x will be with us for a long time as Guido has said it will
be supported for a much longer time than the 2.n=>2.n+1 series.
However, that doesn't mean that the 3rd party modules we depend on will
be supported on both 2.x and 3.x.
* Working with upstream module authors on these ports will be extremely
important. There are likely to be upstreams that want to support only
python-2.x or both python-2.x and python3000 for a while. There are
tools to help port from 2.x to 3.x but without upstream to be a point of
distribution for the resulting work we'd bear the burden of maintaining
a fork which we definitely don't want to do.
* Timeline: Sep 03 2008: Python 2.6 and 3.0 final [2]_

Networkmanager service is shutdown too early
by Valent Turkovic
During the boot I have some samba shares mounted because I have them
configured to mount via fstab file.
When I shutdown or reboot I get a screen for 2-3 minutes that shows
smbfs service trying to unmount samba shares but NM service has
already shutdown and there is no working network connection :(
I have seen this "bad" behaviour in F8 and have reported it on this
mailinglist, but I hoped that the new and smarter NM would take care
of it, but unfortunately it didn't :(
So:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449070
Cheers,
Valent.

Plan for tomorrows (20080522) FESCO meeting
by Brian Pepple
Hi all,
Please find below the list of topics that are likely to come up in the
next FESCo meeting that is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday at 17:00 UTC
in #fedora-meeting on irc.freenode.org:
/topic FESCo meeting -- Any objection to this week's report from FPC at
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2008-May/msg01414.html
/topic FESCo meeting -- Free discussion around Fedora
You want something to be discussed? Send a note to the list in reply to
this mail and I'll add it to the schedule. You can also propose topics
in the meeting while it is in the "Free discussion around Fedora" phase.
If your name/nick is on above list please update the status on the
Extras schedule pages in the wiki ahead of the meeting. That way all the
other FESCo members and interested contributors know what up ahead of
the meeting. And we will avoid long delays in the meeting -- those often
arise if someone describes the recent happenings on a topic directly in
the meeting while all the others have to wait for his slow typing...
Later,
/B

gkrellm themes
by Gene Czarcinski
I have been a gkrellm fan for a number of years. While gkrellm is distributed
as part of Fedora, gkrellm-themes is not being distributed starting with F8
(although the package is still available as part of the F7 distribution).
The reason gkrellm-themes is no longer distributed is that there is no
specific licensing indicated for almost all of the themes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=385131
While themes are not necessary for gkrellm operation, they are nice "eye
candy" and some produce more readable displays than others ... it is a
personal preference.
I am volunteering to be a "limited time" upstream package "assembler" to
create a new base tarball (gkrellm-themes instead of gkrellm-skins) which
will have only themes with acceptable licensing starting with the two in the
current package. But, before diving head first into an empty swimming pool,
I wanted to determine if there is enough interest to warrent my efforts.
Using my friend google, I located:
http://themes.freshmeat.net/browse/969/
all of which are marked in freshmeat as having GPL, OSI Artistic, freely
distributable, or freeware "licenses". While freshmeat marks these packages
as having licenses, examining a couple of the theme tarballs indicates that
no license is part of the theme tarball itself. [see (9) below]
First of all, I need guidance as to what licensing would be acceptable (e.g.,
GPL, OSI Artistic, freely distributable, freeware, BSD, etc.). I need
comments by (and perhaps some contact with) IP lawyers such as those working
for Red Hat.
If I proceed with this packaging, my plan is:
1. Use the two GPL'ed themes in the F7 package as the base.
2. Add any other themes which have licensing embedded in a theme tarball.
3. Go through the themes in the F7 package and the freshmeat list to identify
author(s) for each theme ... if there is no author (e.g., anonymous), drop
that theme.
4. Send each theme author an email asking them for appropriate licensing. If
I get a "NO" answer, drop that theme. If the email bounces (or I have not
heard from the author after a month), drop that theme. For themes which have
multiple authors (the "last" author hacked a theme of another author), lack
of response or a negative response for anyone in the chain results in the
theme being dropped.
5. My preferred response is for the theme's author to send me (or provide me
access to) an updated tarball with appropriate licensing embedded ... add this
theme tarball to gkrellm-themes.
6. If I get a response that indicates to use "xxx" acceptable licensing and
provides me with a copy of that license, add the theme tarball and then add
the email message and the license info to the gkrellm-themes but do not
modify the theme tarball itself ... the rpm package will need to put the info
in the appropriate place ... maybe make them doc files distributed
in /usr/share/doc/gkrellm-themes.../ as license.<themename>
7. If I get a response that indicates to use "xxx" acceptable licensing but
does not provide a copy of the license but I can locate a copy, proceed as
(6) above.
8. If I get a response of "whatever ... do what you want" (or words to that
effect), my action is ??? [add the theme, the email message, and a "GPL
license??] ... what to do ... what to do?? Guidance please.
9. With respect to the packages listed on freshmeat, how do I handle packages
where freshmeat indicates a license but none is embedded? I found one a theme
with a README embedded in the tarball which says:
"If you wish to alter this theme or redistribute it, please give me credit
or I'll hunt you down and rip your eyes out with my teeth.
Ok? good. :)"
How do I handle this? There is an implication that the theme is under some
sort of "freely available" license.
There may be other responses which is why I am interest in IP lawyer contacts.
This may be need where a theme has multiple (chained) authors which have
different ideas as to what the licensing should be.
As I said, I Am Not A Lawyer and I intend to take all claims of authorship at
face value ... if an author says he created the theme and puts it under an
acceptable license, then that is it.
Similarly, I will be making no artistic judgments on what is bundled into
gkrellm-themes. Naturally, if anything is truly offensive, then that theme
may be rejected similar to what was done with screensavers a number of years
ago. In any case, turning gkrellm-themes into a Fedora rpm package will
involve the usual review process which should kick out anything really
tasteless.
I am not currently a Maintainer on any other package so I would prefer to turn
the result over to a "regular" Maintainer. That is, if I can pull enough
themes together to be worth the effort ... right now, two themes does not
seem to be worth the effort. If nobody raises their hand, then I guess I
will have to learn how to be a Fedora Package Maintainer.
Questions, comments, guidance, etc. are solicited.
