= Summary =
Live images oversized due to recent inclusion of m17n-* and scim-*:
- - - - -
* The current inclusion of input-methods group in fedora-live-base.ks breaks
the size of the KDE live images.
* The english-only KDE live images don't have much need for these packages.
* As a short term solution scim-python-pinyin will be replaced by the smaller
scim-pinyin on the live images.
* We should also talk to the Fedora I18N Group about size constraints.
* Another big but mostly unneeded package is solar-backgrounds (KDE does not
support the different times of day).
* We'll suggest splitting solar-backgrounds into a *-common subpackage with
shared artwork which will be required by solar-kde then.
* Also the solar-backgrounds dependency should be moved from libgnome to a
package higher up in the GNOME stack (which isn't included on the KDE spin).
TTY mods to kdmrc (switch X to tty1 per faster startup):
- - - - -
* RexDieter has tested some modifications of kdmrc to use tty1 for KDM (like
GDM is doing).
* This change will be included in the next release of kde-setting

Frozen for Fedora 10
by Jesse Keating
Last night at 0555 UTC we froze for Fedora 10. The rawhide from
20081028 is the frozen content. At this point, builds for F10 are not
automatically brought into Rawhide, and won't be in the Fedora 10
release. To request a freeze override, please use the Final Freeze
Policy[1]
If you're closing bugs by doing builds, please ensure that those builds
get properly tagged for our final release.
To check the status of your particular build/package, you can look at
the contents of the 'f10-final' tag in Koji. This is the tag for the
Fedora 10 release, and what rawhide will compose from until F10 is done.
koji latest-pkg f10-final <foo>
It's the last mile folks, lets make it awesome!

[Off topic] Codeweavers giving away free licenses
by Peter Robinson
This I realise is somewhat off topic but as it may allow people to
move from that other OS to Fedora I thought there were some links :-)
Codeweavers is giving away Crossover Linux Pro today due to a
challenge their CEO issued to the US President.

Enjoy for those that are interested, apologies to those that aren't

evolution requests unlock keyring
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
I'm running evolution-2.24.0-3.fc10.i386 on my fedora 10 beta
installation. When I start evolution the first time, it simply asks me
to unlock my default keyring (in german) as it ever did, and other apps
still do, but then it keeps asking me (in english) to provide my login
passwd to unlock the keyring. Is that a bug or does it try to get
several passwords?
Is there a way to log which passwds the keyring ist asked for by what
app?

R-devel going away
by Tom Callaway
This email serves as an announcement that I plan to swallow up R-devel
into the base R package. Why?
* It is causing no end of user complaints. The typical R user expects to
be able to do a "CPAN" (really, I should say "CRAN") style package
install through the R interface:
install.packages("RSQLite")
This doesn't work unless you have R-devel installed. The average R user
is a professor or a student, and neither of them are going to
necessarily possess the necessary Linux/Fedora knowledge to be able to
understand why this doesn't work like the R documentation says it
should.
* The size of the R-devel is tiny, about 440K installed. It will not
bloat the main package to absorb the .h files and a .pc file into the
main package. There are no libraries in the R-devel package.
* The primary users of R-devel are R addon packages. They can continue
to BuildRequires: R-devel safely (hooray for Provides/Requires).
* libRmath (the R shared library) will still be a separate package.
libRmath-devel will still be a separate package. As far as I know,
nothing in Fedora uses libRmath, nor is libRmath-devel necessary for
building R addons.
Now, I recognize that this is a violation of the Fedora Packaging
Guidelines, and I've given a lot of thought to this over the last few
days, and technically, this is a reversal of my earlier stance (which is
to stick to the guidelines). However, I think this is a key
functionality that Fedora R users expect to just work, and I want to try
to make sure that they get the best R experience out of the box that
they can.
As Martyn Plummer pointed out:
There are currently 1533 packages/bundles on CRAN, not counting the
recommended packages that are already distributed with R. Of these
packages, 420 require to the R headers. Fedora only supplies RPMs for
9
of them.
I'm not entirely sure if I need FESCo or FPC approval to take this
action, if so, this is my notice of requesting it. ;)
I'm also looking for feedback and comments, of course.
Thanks,
~spot (Fedora R maintainer)

FYI: libical 0.40 moves libicalvcal headers
by Kevin Kofler
Hi,
I just built libical 0.40 for F10 (discussed with the libical maintainer
already). Rationale:
* should be fully API- and ABI-compatible (same sonames),
* at least 0.33 will be required to build KDE 4.2 (F10 currently has only
0.32), so upstream KDE developers who work on Fedora have asked us to build a
newer version so they can keep working on KDE development on Fedora,
* having a version >= 0.33 also allows us to build kdepimlibs 4.1.2 against the
system libical (with a patch).
There is, however, one minor change: the libicalvcal headers are now
under /usr/include/libical along with the other libical headers,
not /usr/include/libicalvcal as they used to. It is possible to make
compatibility symlinks (of the individual files, not the directory, replacing
directories with symlinks is a big no-no with RPM), so should we add them? Or
does this change not affect any package anyway?

Need a build chain in koji, not a chainbuild [URGENT]
by Christoph Wickert
I'm working hard on the Xfce 4.4.3 update. Since it is only a bugfix
release we'd like it to appear in F10. My problem is that it has a long
dependency chain. I first have to build the basic libs and then I can
start with some apps, then the rest.
Now I'm stuck already at the second package because it needs the first
one. How long do I have to wait until the first package appears at
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/static-repos/dist-rawhide-current/
or at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/development/ ?
Please don't tell me to use a chainbuild, because IMO for a long
dependency chain this is to risky. I have _no_ way to test if a package
builds, nether with mock, nor with a scratchbuild. If one package fails,
the complete chain is broken. This has become even worse with immutable
tags (although I understand the need for immutable tags).
What to do in situations like these? I'm not talking about this
particular situation but about problems like these in general.
