Firewire on Fedora 7: summary of troubles
by Michel Salim
There are some regression in the present development tree when it
comes to Firewire mass storage (sbp2) support:
- kernel revision 1.2919.fc7:
-- sbp2 loaded at boot time, but no drive detected
-- after unloading and reloading sbp2, the drive is detected, but
gnome-volume-manager still does not see it after logging in
- kernel revision 1.2922.fc7:
-- loading sbp2 causes kernel panic

Wiki upgrade
by Mike McGrath
There's been a strong push to get the wiki upgraded sooner than later.
Unfortunately we're running into stability issues (among other
things) in its current state and platform. Sometime in the next
couple of weeks we'll probably request a 12-24 hour wiki change lock
so we can do the upgrade. We're going to try to make this as painless
as possible but please be patient.
Is there any time that is better / worse than any other time for
anyone out there? Does anyone care as long as enough advanced notice
is given?

Thanks for replying.
That is what I read and I was looking for an alternative to that. Is there
other solution? Or this is the best available solution already?

announce: v2.6.20-rt1 yum repository and kernel rpms
by Ingo Molnar
in case you are interested in really bleeding-edge kernel rpms for
fc7/fc6/fc5, i've created the -rt kernel yum repository, which provides
the -rt kernel in rpmized form for i686 and x86_64, updated
daily/bi-daily. The package is named 'kernel-rt' so it does not conflict
with the Fedora kernel package - you can always revert to the Fedora
kernel.
The -rt kernel has the following main features: it closely tracks Linus'
-git tree, has KVM, high-res timers, dynticks, fully preemptible kernel,
preempt-rcu, plus all the usual upstream stuff that the Fedora kernel
has enabled. (The yum repository pointers at the end of the
announcement.)

Subject: v2.6.20-rt1, yum/rpm
Cc: linux-rt-users(a)vger.kernel.org
i have released the v2.6.20-rt1 kernel, which can be downloaded from the
usual place:
http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/
more info about the -rt patchset can be found in the RT wiki:
http://rt.wiki.kernel.org
This is a fixes-only release. Since the -rt tree has been closely
tracking Linus' upstream kernel since -rc1, no new issues are expected -
please re-report if anything is still unfixed.
There are lots of changes relative to 2.6.19-rt6 (the last stable
release), but these are mostly fixes and other gradual improvements. KVM
is now enabled in the yum kernel on both i686 and x86_64 (and has been
enabled since around -rc1-rt1), the -rt tree tracks kvm-trunk (which is
a bit fresher than upstream KVM) and has a few additional paravirt
speedups implemented and enabled.
to build a 2.6.20-rt1 tree, the following patches should be applied:
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.20.tar.bz2
http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/patch-2.6.20-rt1
the -rt YUM repository for Fedora Core 6 and 5, for architectures i686
and x86_64 can be activated via:
cd /etc/yum.repos.d
wget http://people.redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/rt.repo
yum install kernel-rt.x86_64 # on x86_64
yum install kernel-rt # on i686
yum update kernel-rt # refresh - or enable yum-updatesd
as usual, bugreports, fixes and suggestions are welcome,
Ingo

[RFE] install from software raid in f7
by drago01
Hello,
Anaconda is able to install from harddisk. But this does not work if the
images are on a mdraid device. (cannot select it).
Anaconda is able to mount md raid devices (see rescue mode). So is it
possible to add this feature to f7? (point to md raid device and
install/update from there).
This will not only make it possible to do harddisk installs fro people
which does not have a non raid partiton on there disks (exept /boot
which is to small), but this (raid0,raid5) would also be the fastest
install source (comparing with non raid hdd or optical media).

New new package process SUCKS! (read please)
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
I just went through my first new package under the new process (aka
package no 100, so I'm experienced in this). The mail below may seem
flamebate but it is mean't very seriously, so please take it seriously.
And the new process SUCKS!
First of all as discussed earlier the new review with flags is both
unclear / not very well documented and much more work then it used to
be, without any clear arguments why we needed a new process in the first
place -> SUCKS
Then I wanted todo an import an it failed as I first needed to be in
owners.list and that requires manual intervention by an CVS admin, so
now I have the feeling that I need a CVS admin for any fart I want todo
-> SUCKS
The new ACL design is broken, the ACL's shouldn't work by owners.list,
but instead by putting the owner in the acl in the initial import and
then owners.list would "just" be used for bugzilla and not for CVS
access / ACL, which in turn means that then anyone could be given rights
to owners.list as things were -> problem solved. I know things are
probably not that easy. But the current solution is not a solution its a
cure worse then the disease! IOW it SUCKS!

Hans

Using qemu to test images
by Jesse Keating
I've been using qemu to test my install trees, both without KVM and with KVM,
both i386 and x86_64. I want to start doing this for ppc as well, however
I'm running into an issue and I really don't know where to go from here (:
Basically I create a file system image and then run:
sudo qemu-system-ppc -vnc 1 -m
512 -hda /home/jkeating/pungi.img -cdrom /srv/pungi/development/6.90/Desktop/ppc/os/images/boot.iso
This is just like what I call on x86, module the -system-ppc. However when I
connect to VNC I see http://people.redhat.com/jkeating/qemu-ppc.png
I know some of you are experienced with qemu on ppc, care to give me a hand?
This same message comes up when booting the Test1 isos, which I kno wboot on
my macs, so I don't think it is something wrong with the image creation. The
online documentation for ppc is a bit sparse :/
