FC6 and macbook pro
by Louis Garcia
I am interested in running FC on a macbook pro. I just read that
FC6test1 has early test code for these things. Does these include all
the proper driver for video and wireless? The ATI X1600 video currently
has no 2d or 3d drivers and I have no clue about the wireless chip. I
would like to boot directly into FC without OS/X and bootcamp, this will
probably involve efi for 32bit boxes. Is work being done in these areas?
I am interested in mactel becouse currently they are the lightest
notebooks available in 17" screens.

Re: Help name the test project!
by Chris Tyler
How about Fedora "Siren" -- both in the sense that...
1. a siren is an alarm warning that something is wrong, and
2. the sirens of Greek myth tested sailors, and they exposed weakness by
provoking crashes :-)

Some Pup/Pirut suggestions
by dragoran
Hello
Here are some things in pup/pirut that (in my opinon) needs some
improvement:
1)Make them somehow threaded...
The gui sometime does not respond or even redraw when some "huge work"
is done in the background (even on a dual opteron box).Would spiltind
the gui from the backend stuff into seperate thread help? the gui can be
updated / rewdrawn while the other thread is doing the work.
2)Why does pirut close itself after it has done a task? for pup its ok
to be closed after it has completed updates but pirut? After installing
an app sometime I want to delete an other one or install a second one. I
know that I can select many tasks at once but I see no reason why pirut
should close it self.
3)Pup should show more info on updates like description a "normal" user
may get confused by just seeing a name like hal, dbus or libXX. If pup
could somehow show a description of what this package are this would be
solved.

installation path for cross compiler
by Erwin Rol
Hey all,
what would be the correct installation path for a cross-compiler and
it's support include files and libraries ?
For example a arm-unknown-linux-gnu-* toolset, this would include gcc,
binutils, include files, but also libraries compiled for the target
(which of course can not be used on the host and should not be mixed up
with the host libraries)
Should that go under something
like /opt/crosscompiler/arm-unknown-linux-gnu/
or something like
/usr/lib/crosstools/arm-unknown-linux-gnu/ because there is also
a /usr/lib/gcc/<arch>/ or
/usr/arm-unknown-linux-gnu/ or somewhere completely different ?
Locally i most of the time use some /opt/blabla/ setup, but I don#t
think official distribution packages belong in that place, at least
that's how I understand the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.
TIA,
Erwin

XEN: pciback.hide disabled?
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I'm trying to dedicate a number of NICs on a Xen setup to the guest OS.
It was advised (in the -users list) that I use the pciback.hide option
to hide the NICs from the host.
I tried adding the pciback.hide command line option to the Xen0 kernel
and got nothing. (Unknown boot option `pciback.hide=(xx:xx.x)':
ignoring)
After sifting through the kernel configuration I noticed that all FC5
xen kernels (including latest -testing) disable the PCIBACK support.
(CONFIG_XEN_PCIDEV_FRONTEND and CONFIG_XEN_PCIDEV_BACKEND)
Am I right? Do I need to enable these two to get pciback.hide working?
Or am I barking at the wrong tree?
Thanks,
Gilboa

Help name the test project!
by Will Woods
Hello Fedorans! I need your help.
I've started putting info about the Fedora testing project on the wiki -
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraTesting - but I've got a problem.
"Fedora Testing" just isn't a very inspiring project name. It's supposed
to encompass a lot more than just testing Fedora - it wants to be a
project (under the auspices of the Fedora community) to create and
promote testing tools and methods for Open Source Software in general.
We want to test everything! We want to make "Fedora" and "Open Source"
synonymous with "rock-solid".
So "Fedora Testing" just doesn't feel like enough to me.
Even more problematic is the Open Sourcing of Red Hat's automated test
system, which they have named RHTS - Red Hat Test Suite. Surely we can
come up with a more inspiring name for a massive automated software test
suite/harness/system.
Good names would be short, fairly unique, not trademarked, and it would
be nice to avoid unpronounceable acronyms (like RHTS, XML-RPC, HTTP,
USB, etc). Dogtail and Mugshot are a couple of good recent examples from
Red Hat.
Here are some possible project names:
Proof
Cassandra
Witness
FTL (Fedora Test League / Faster Than Light)
And some names for an automated test suite:
Turnstile (keeps the RHTS abbreviation for easy rebranding)
Giant Testing Robot (GTR or testbot for short?)
So - does anyone have a good name for these things? We need your help!
We can't start mailing lists and websites without a good name!

Cosmetic startup issue with readahead scripts
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I've been wondering about this one for some time now. I look into it
every once in a while, but never managed to figure it out, since boot
time is tricky and/or painful to reproduce with added debug.
When booting my laptop, and I'm pretty sure I've seen it elsewhere too,
some startup scripts, most notably both readahead_early and readahead
print two "OK" lines, one with the long name "background readahead" and
the other with plain "readahead" or "readahead_early".
I simply fail to find where this might come from, and was wondering if
it was some problem only on my laptop or if others were seeing it.
Running "service readahead_early restart" prints a single line as
expected.
I noticed that a script from a package of mine is doing the same,
i8kbuttons from the i8kutils package... but I can't see anything wrong
there either.
The one thing I see in common is that they all use some kind of
"manual" startup procedure with an explicit call to "echo_success"
instead of the usual call to the "daemon" function. But looking at the
echo_success function, I really don't see how it could cause that since
it really only displays "OK". Something else must be going on...
I know this is a very minor issue, but having a clean and pretty boot
sequence is quite enjoyable :-)
Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have an idea what could be
causing it?
Matthias
