Recent AIGLX Breakage?
by Thomas J. Baker
I had aiglx working fine on my laptop for quite a while now. I've got a
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 Lf [FireGL 9000] but within the last
week, I've succumb to the everything-is-blue-with-metacity-compositing
enabled bug. Anyone else had it working and then have it recently break?

A sole, standard proxy library for Fedora
by Philip Prindeville
I have a laptop that travels with me from work (where there's the
use of web proxies) to home (where I don't), and was overwhelmed
by the number of config files that I have to switch over every time
I move from one place to the other.
The list of applications is seemingly endless:
* apt
* yum
* wget
* rpm
* thunderbird
* firefox
* evolution
* sunbird
* the myriad of scripts in Perl using libwww, etc.
And it struck me: why not have a single libproxy.so for Fedora
(or Linux/Freebsd) that has a single, system-wide copy of the state,
rather than embedding *system-wide* state into each application's
configuration?
Windows does this: there's a single control panel you go into to
enable/disable proxy services.
Why can't Linux do that?
How hard would it be to find the best/most extensible proxy sources
out there, round them out to cover all possible services (including
IMAP, Socks, RealAudio, etc) and then patch all of the applications
incrementally (or have the owners patch each application) to make use
of the Single, Unified Proxy Library (supple)?
What am I missing here? It seems so obvious that I'm surprised it
hasn't already been done.

OLPC + Fedora = ?
by Andy Green
Hi folks -
There doesn't seem to be a place to talk about the RH OLPC project yet.
I mailed the olpc(a)redhat.com address last week but didn't hear anything
yet. It seems that Fedora and the OLPC development effort would have a
lot in common. I wanted to make some suggestions which are a little
radical but hopefully can make some interesting discussion before things
are set in stone.
My core starting assumption is that the box cannot be made for the price
suggested and that triage will be needed. Therefore the software must
get ahead of the game by assuming a weaker processor and half the flash.
Please understand though that these are just suggestions for thinking
about, not demands, complaints, etc.
Hardware
Seems hard to believe that with such a low price point, AMD will deliver
optimal pricing and that the target CPU throughput is not excessive with
x86. Isn't it better for the longer term to only weakly couple the
concept of the cheap laptop to a processor arch? Isn't it better if
it's more of a virtual specification that, say, random Chinese companies
can compete with each other to provide at the lowest possible price,
without encumbered CPU designs even like Arm? It's great to tout it
around Large American Corporations, but it would be a big win if the
final specification was buildable by anyone.
- AMD x86 -> OpenRISC 1200 (Has working GNU toolchain)
http://www.opencores.org/projects.cgi/web/or1k/openrisc_1200
- ??? expensive patented video --> Opencores VGA/LCD controller
http://www.opencores.org/projects.cgi/web/vga_lcd/overview
- Sound -> Cheap SPI codec, eg,
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tlv320aic23b.html or AC97
interface to external mixer
http://www.opencores.org/projects.cgi/web/ac97/overview
Software
- Linux 2.6 with hardware-optimized .config
- glibc -> uclibc http://www.uclibc.org/ or newlib
http://sources.redhat.com/newlib/
- coreutils + bash + a ton of other stuff -> busybox http://www.busybox.net
- ssh -> dropbear (http://matt.ucc.asn.au/dropbear/dropbear.html )
- apache -> lighttpd (http://lighttpd.net )
- firefox -> Opera? Used in Nokia 770... thought it was OSS now but
couldn't find link on site.
- various media players / codecs -> Ogg Vorbis + Theora only
What will the new modular X do faced with linking to something other
than glibc? What about Gnome?
- Although I am a KDE man, Gnome really impressed me for the first time
on the Nokia 770. The KISS vibe actually worked in that context. The
770 would be a good model for what's needed generally in fact
(http://maemo.org ,
http://maemo.org/platform/docs/maemo_exec_whitepaper.html )
- Ext3 root filesystem -> JFFS2 NAND root filesystem
- Grub -> u-boot (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=65938 ) .. can
pull a bzImage out of JFFS2 directly in <100K
Well I'm sure these ideas and more are already floating around, it would
be cool if these can be dual-purposed into a uber lightweight "Fedora
Beanie" version. Ultimately a lot of package specfiles will have to
have the configure options revisited anyway...

question about creation of updated DVD iso
by Gianluca Cecchi
I have read instructions at
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/gene_czarcinski/update_distro/
I have basically one question: how to update the vmlinuz and
initrd.img files to put under isolinux directory of CD/DVD, so that
the installation kernel is the 2111 one and not the default 2054?
Do I have to compile the kernel source rpm with any specific target?
I remember in rh el 3 I was able to use a specific config file for the
installation kernel...
but it seems it is not here in Fedora.
Is it the i586 one? And what about the initrd.img file generation?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Bye,
Gianluca

Source address routing policy defined in a System V way
by Bob Richmond
Ok, so this seems like it should be a fairly common configuration and
there's no method I can see to define it entirely via System V
configuration files. Say you have two network interfaces on two
different networks and with two different default routes. This can be
used, for instance, if you had two different ISPs and wanted to
provide the same services to both links from one server. You can
set up two routing tables for each default route, and set up a rule
that any packets originating from a particular network must be
responded to through the same corresponding gateway:
ip rule add from 192.168.0.0/24 lookup 100 pref 100
ip route add table 100 default via 192.168.0.1 dev eth1
Now, being able to define a GATEWAY for each interface definition
(eg: ifcfg-eth0) IMPLIES (at least in my mind) that you can define
a different default route to use to respond to packets received
from a particular interface. This, however, is not the case. :)
I'm not sure how this variable is typically meant to be used.
Can this be made into a new feature, or am I going about this
all wrong?

Changing the layout of repodata to simplify making local yum repo.
by David Timms
I have searched the archives in relation to this but only found Jesse's:
"Changing the way that Development lands", so if this has been done
before kindly point me to some better google terms.
What I would like to see changed is a common structure between online
and CD/DVD layouts and the downloaded yum cache eg currently:
online: {effectively the top level of the dvd iso}
<http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/os>
Fedora/
Fedora/RPMS
repodata/
repodata/other.xml.gz
repodata/filelists.xml.gz
repodata/primary.xml.gz
repodata/comps.xml
yum cache:
eg /var/cache/yum/core
repomd.xml
primary.xml.gz
comps.xml
{cachecookie}
{primary.xml.gz.sqlite}
headers/
packages/ {RPMS}
Now, if the layouts were consistent:
machine1:
- yum.conf: keepcache=1
- yum update
- ftp/http serv the yum cache folder.
machine2:
- set yum.repos.d/fedora-core.repo baseurl to machine1/core etc.
- yum update
would just work. No createrepo etc would be required.
So if machine1 has a superset of packages required by all other internal
machines, the fact that machine 1 is up2date means it becomes very easy
and external bandwidth efficient to get the rest of machines up2date.
This is a hindrance for updates repo, because it's repodata is stored
within the <basearch>/repodata on the repo server:
<http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/>
{all the RPMS at this level}
repodata/
repodata/other.xml.gz
repodata/filelists.xml.gz
repodata/primary.xml.gz
repodata/comps.xml
So if you point fedora-updates.repo @ another machines
cache/yum/updates, it wont find repodata/repomd.xml
This can be worked around by creating appropriate sym linking; it could
however just work with some tweaking to the structure.
Also, while you can point fedora-core.repo at another machine with a
mounted dvd iso, the structure yum creates on disk differs from the dvd.
This structure is then not immediately sharable to further machines.
core dvd primary.xml:
...
<location href="Fedora/RPMS/binutils-2.16.91.0.6-4.i386.rpm"/>
...
-----
It would seem that a preferred layout could be created- eg {i386/}
repodata/
packages/
headers/
This could be advantageous in other ways eg:
1. the repodata folder is not inside the packages/RPMS dir, hence
machines trying to ftp repodata/* wont need to cause a complete folder
contents traversal of say thousands of rpms.
2. rsync or other mirroring of the structure could be done, and the
result is immediately usable by yum.
3. mock building easier since a local {partial} mirror easier to setup
(just copy the downloads that mock does first time, ht/f tp serve it,
config mock-yum to retrieve from above. and keep it up2date with what
further mock runs retrieve).
Disadvantages:
1. other repos would need to catch up for the yum changes.
2. Is it of limited usefulness ?
I can see that at least various bits would need to change:
1. yum to store it's cached repodata in a folder one level down called
repodata, ie changes to yum itself
2. layout of each repo changed and rebuild the filelist.xml to suit
3. mirroring {as Jesse worked out for the other layout changes} needs
some tricks.
What problems/etc can people see with this proposal ? Is changing yum in
this way a bad idea ?

OK, this is definitely selinux. However, the workaround posted here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Extras/MockTricks
isn't working for me. The build succeeds, but semodule fails.
# semodule -i mock.pp
libsemanage.semanage_install_active: setfiles returned error code 1.
libsemanage.semanage_install_active: setfiles returned error code 1.
semodule: Failed!
If I can get past this, I'll add this workaround to my build
systems and rerun all the failed builds.
Thanks,
Matt
