Re: XFCE in Fedora missing session manager
by Christopher Trumbour
Aha, that explains it. Though it doesn't make all that much sense to
have it only on extras... what if the computer isn't conntected to an
internet(s)? Ah well, at least I got what I was looking for. Thanks, guys!

ati driver question
by Brian Anderson
I have been testing the xorg-X11-drv-ati driver with my T42p with much
success (I don't see the random lockups others have been reporting). I
have used desktop-effects with good success too. However when I try it
with 3d games like bzflag or foobilard it doesn't work.
What is the state of the radeon drivers with respect to 3d? Is it a bug
if I get messages like the following:
[bikehead@porco ~]$ bzflag
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
*********************************WARN_ONCE*********************************
File r300_render.c function r300Fallback line 422
Software fallback:ctx->Polygon.StippleFlag
***************************************************************************
Try R300_SPAN_DISABLE_LOCKING env var if this hangs.
or is the normal state of affairs?
Thanks.

concerning X freeze recurring
by Sam Folk-Williams
Hi,
About once a day my system randomly freezes while running X (gnome). I
am not sure what debugging info to collect at this point, here are some
details:
-This is a t42 thinkpad
-I am running rawhide updating every day
-this started happening about 10 days ago and just happened today again
-it happens about once per day
-it does not seem to matter what applications are running
-it usually happens while i am moving the mouse
The screen completely freezes and the system does not respond to
anything. You can't go to any vtys, and I don't think you can SSH in
although I don't often have another system to try this with. The only
thing to do is a hard reset. I thought maybe the system was panicking,
so I set up kexec/kdump. But the freeze does not trigger a boot into the
kdump kernel, so I suspect it's just frozen not actually panicked.
Anyone else seeing this? Any suggestions for what to do to collect debug
info?
Thanks,
Sam

State of multilib development
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
Yesterday I tried to build i386 rpms on my x86_64 using the new
multilib-devel packages instead of resorting to an i386 chroot.
Although we have come a long way to making this possible there are still
a few issues which makes doing this very hard:
1) gcc ignores setarch
======================
"gcc -o hello helloworld.c", creates an x86_64 elf file on my x86_64
system as expected however, "setarch i386 gcc -o hello helloworld.c"
also creates an x86_64 elf file instead of an i386 one, to get an i386
one I must do: "gcc -m32 -o hello helloworld.c".
This is unfortunate, because even though rpmbuild adds -m32 to the
*FLAGS environment variables things still don't for many packages,
because they for example often ignore LDFLAGS, thus not specifying -m32
when linking, causing things to fail.
I personally would expect setarch i386 gcc -o hello helloworld.c" to
create an i386 elf binary, I haven't filed a bug for this though,
because I believe the current behavior is intended, unfortunate but
intended.
A work around is to create shell script wrappers for gcc, g++ and ld
which always add -m32, put these somewhere outside the standard $PATH
and add the location to PATH when you want to build i386 binaries.
2) rpmbuild ignores setarch
===========================
"setarch i386 rpmbuild -bb foo.spec" Still tries to build an x86_64 foo,
I know "rpmbuild --target i386" works better but still has issues, for
example libdir is still set to /usr/lib64, this is already in bugzilla.
I however still believe that rpmbuild should change its default build
target when using setarch and should call setarch itself when called
with --target, shall I BZ this?
3) pkgconfig ignores setarch
============================
I thought that pkgconfig was supposed to get this right and hence it was
used to implement verious replacement foo-config scripts, but pkgconfig
doesn't get this right. When testing I had only libpng-devel.i386
installed not the x86_64 version:
---
[hans@shalem ~]$ pkg-config --cflags libpng
Package libpng was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libpng.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libpng' found
---
Behaves as expected, since it searches /usr/lib64/pkgconfig where there
is no libpng.pc
---
[hans@shalem ~]$ setarch i386 pkg-config --cflags libpng
Package libpng was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libpng.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libpng' found
[hans@shalem ~]$ ls -l /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng.pc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Oct 15 18:50 /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libpng.pc ->
libpng12.pc
---
Does not behave as expected, it should search /usr/lib/pkgconfig and
find libpng.pc
This can be worked around by doing a "export
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig"
Shall I BZ this?
4) rpmbuild lets x86_64 packages satisfy BR's when building for i386
====================================================================
The subject says most of it, when doing an rpmbuild --target=i386 I
don't want libXt-devel.x86_64 to satisfy a BR: libXt-devel .
I know things aren't that easy because with something like BR:
desktop-file-utils, the x86_64 version will do fine.
Suggestion: make rpmbuild check the arch of BR's who's name ends with
-devel.
This will still have a few exceptions, but will be a big improvement in
general. BZ?
5) xxx-devel.arch should require xxx.arch not just xxx
======================================================
When I install libXt-devel.i386 I expect it to drag in libXt.i386 and
not to be happy with the already installed libXt.x86_64 .
This will also stop some polution with i386 packages of x86_64 system,
because currently we have the following scenario:
libXt-1.0.2-3.fc6.x86_64 is installed
Users does "yum install libXt-devel.x86_64"
Yum finds libXt-devel-1.0.2-3.1.fc6.x86_64,
which needs libXt-1.0.2-3.1.fc6.x86_64 yum does decides to update the
x86_64 version of libXt and as an added bonus also install the i386
version since both match the requirement of libXt-devel-1.0.2-3.1.fc6.x86_64
Once more if people agree with me here I'll put this in bugzilla.
Let me know what you think & Regards,
Hans

XFCE in Fedora missing session manager
by Christopher Trumbour
This should be a really quick question. It's not support, it's curiousity.
Apparently, the session mamger in XFCE is missing in the build provided
in Fedora Core 5. This is really wierd... I mean, the link to its
section in the XFCE manual is still there, only it gives a 404 error. I
found this out while I had to temporarily go to XFCE from GNOME when
GNOME unexpectedly blew my settings up. So, why is it removed?

firefox slow when saving to disk
by Marcel J.E. Mol
Hi,
So recently we have no choice anymore between mozilla and firefox. So I gave in
and started using firefox....
This on rawhide from october 7. Firefox is firefox-1.5.0.7-6.fc6.i386.rpm.
Now I have just 2 big issues:
- when I want to save a file it takes ages to complete and in the meantime firefox
is using 100% cpu and does note repsond for a while.
As an example the following link: http://www.mazda.nl/page.asp?sPageID=400,400,000
Just klik on one of the links. It will open an new new tab/window. After a while
the downloads window appears. Downloading itself seems to go fine but at the end
of the donwload, the last second to go, it again takes exepceptional amounts of time
to really finsih the download...
It this a known issue?
- When a page has a few animated gifs, firefox also takes all the CPU it can get.
see for exmaple http://www.sat4all.com/forums/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=dreambox
When there are more than 2 animated gifs on the left side of the page cpiu usage
goes sky high...
(actually I have this problem with mozilla also, and it was mentioned on the
list several months ago, but no solution yet...)
Does anyone else experience these issues, or should I file a bugzilla?
Thanks
-Marcel
