SquashFS?
by Darko Ilic
Hello,
My name is Darko Ilic, I`m working on Fedora live CD generator named Kadischi
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kadischi).
Live CDs that Kadischi generates currently use zisofs, but IMHO it would be
much better to make them with SquashFS. According to the benchmark results
found at http://kerneltrap.org/files/PERFORMANCE.README.txt SquashFS is far
superior. It is faster and has higher compression ratio, and both of the
mentioned problems are present on live CDs Kadischi generates.
I wanted to ask what are the opinions on the subject, and is there any chance
for SquashFS to make it's way into Fedora kernel by FC5? I`ve heard it was
submitted to LKML recently and there was some discussions surrounding that
and that it is a likely candidate for the upstream kernel.
Since we`re trying to make the first Fedora live CDs for FC5, it would be
really nice to have SquashFS, because it would improve the quality of the
live CDs dramatically.

Crash with fontconfig-2.3.91.cvs20051017-1
by Tim Murphy
Hi,
After installing fontconfig-2.3.91.cvs20051017-1.i386, gdm would start but
then crash before displaying anything. Eventually I managed to get X to
startup with xinit and tried to run metacity. Metacity crashed and I then
tried it under valgrind. I have appended the output but basically there
seemed to be a problem in fontconfig relating to permissions to some mmapp'd
memory area.
I downgraded to fontconfig-2.3.2-1 and the problem "went away."
I can't be sure if this is a fontconfig problem or some setup problem - has
anyone else experienced it?
Regards,
Tim

IGMP packets at user space
by avijit@cs.ucsb.edu
I am developing an application for multicast detection on Fedora core. As
part of it I have to inspect IGMP packets arriving from routers (e.g.
Membership Query). I am using raw socket with IPPROTO_IGMP to send and
receive IGMP packets. Using ethereal I can see the IGMP packets going out
and coming in to the host. However, incoming IGMP packets never arrive to
my user level process - socket 'receivefrom' simply does not get them. I am
not sure whether I have to set any socket option or ioctl to receive IGMP
packets at user process level. I will appreciate any help. I can post my
code if required. Also please let me know if I should post it to some other
mailing list.
Thanks.

No U-SCSI for AIC7880 and 2.6.13 kernel
by Joachim Frieben
After upgrading the SMP kernel on my PR440FX box, the SCSI
subsystem switched from U-SCSI to FAST-SCSI mode. There are
three devices connected to the on-board AHA-2940UW device.
This change happens when booting a 2.6.13 kernel. As soon as
I return to a 2.6.12 based kernel, everything works right.
The attached hard disk is a QUANTUM Atlas 10k III drive.
Now, the transfer rate ia a mere 18 MB/s compared to 28 MB/s
which was acceptable for the AIC7880 based UW-interface.

yum multi-lib dependency processing
by Willem Riede
It is my observation (fc5-devel), that when yum decides a package (B) that is
installed in both i386 and x86_64 versions needs upgrading because of a
dependancy on a newer version of package (B) by package (A) I'm telling yum to
install, it will add only one (B.x86_64) to the update set, and then will
complain about conflicting files when I tell it to go ahead.
On the other hand, if I tell yum explicitely to upgrate that multi-lib package
(B), it correctly figures out that both need updating, and there are no
conflicts.
So my question is, can we teach yum to upgrade both architectures when an
upgrade of one is indicated as a side effect of the current transaction?
Thanks, Willem Riede.
