bugzilla stock replies
by Alexander Larsson
Taking some ideas from the Gnome bug squad I've created a page with
stock responses to bugzilla reports:
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/wiki/StockBugzillaResponses
There are just a few reports at the moment, but hopefully people will
add new ones there and polish the existing ones as they start being
used.
Some messages also reference the page
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/wiki/ReportingBugs
which isn't written yet. I'll probably spend some time writing an
initial version of it later this week.

FYI: Fedora i2o Status
by Warren Togami
http://i2o.shadowconnect.com/fedora.php
Status of I2O support
=====================
Updated: Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004
Fedora Core 3 Test2 theoretically has fully working I2O support from the
installer, tested with most DPT/Adaptec I2O cards. There is one patch
for cards with 128MB onboard cache that will be in FC3 Test3, but
otherwise we know if no further issues. If you do run into any problems
with the kernel of FC3 Test2 with I2O, please discuss I2O kernel
problems on linux-scsi mailing list, or Fedora
specific problems on fedora-test-list.
http://i2o.shadowconnect.com/
Please also test the raidutils RPM available from Markus' i2o homepage.
It allows you to monitor and interact with your i2o arrays on a
running system.

More mirrors will come online in the near future; check:
http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html
for a list of mirrors that carry Fedora Core.
One additional feature provided by the Linux community is the
availability of Fedora Core releases via BitTorrent.
http://torrent.linux.duke.edu/FC3-test2-binary-i386.torrent
http://torrent.linux.duke.edu/FC3-test2-binary-x86_64.torrent
See http://torrent.linux.duke.edu/ for other forms, including
SRPMS and the DVD iso. RPMS for BitTorrent are available from:
http://torrent.linux.duke.edu/btrpms/
Usage is simple:
btdownloadcurses.py --url http://URL.torrent
Allow incoming TCP 6881 - 6889 to join the torrent swarm.

backups
by Colin Walters
So, it seems to me that our backup software situation is really a
mess.
One particular feature that I absolutely need is xattr support, because
all my machines run SELinux. My personal server also uses ACLs for a
few files.
As far as I can tell, the *only* software we ship that even supports
xattrs at all is "star". However star has the enormous drawback that it
doesn't support incremental dumps. This makes it nearly useless for me
since my server has various ISO images and the like lying around, and
re-archiving them for each backup would quickly eat space. Also, star
is written by someone who has displayed a fundamental misunderstanding
of the GPL.
Now, rsync has an experimental patch for xattr support:
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2003-June/006413.html
But we don't apply it. We'd also need an additional SELinux-specific
patch to make it use setfscreatecon to avoid a race condition.
It doesn't look to me like librsync supports xattrs either, so none of
the programs based on it like rdiff-backup will.
However, even if we had an xattr+SELinux-capable rsync, I think we'd
still need a tar-like archiver (one better than star). I did a bit of
searching on this and found "dar":
http://dar.linux.free.fr/
Has anyone used this program? It looks to be quite nice; if we can just
add the specific SELinux support I think it would be a good replacement
for star. I particularly like how its incremental backups support
deleting files too. I'm a bit unsure of whether its xattr support
implies ACL support.
Are there any other programs I missed? Particularly ones that people
out there actually use?

autofs auto.master change
by Joe Orton
Jeff, why has autofs been changed to only read a single auto.master
source? All my test machines rely on multiple auto.master sources being
used; they are configured to use both the site-wide NIS auto.master
along with additional local per-machine mounts defined in
/etc/auto.{master,misc}.
This will be a serious migration issue for anyone else using such a
configuration.

imho this should be automated. Most people just use fedora-pkgannfmt
anyway, which could probably just be run as the bult packages are copied
to their respective directories !?

Regarding Extras package announcements
by Warren Togami
The old fedora-package-announce(a)fedora.us list has been broken in the
past month due to some unknown issue caused by the Legacy 7.3 mailman
update. I have spent many hours trying to debug it, but have been
unable to fix it. I've been wanting to retire that old mailman server
for a while now, but this forces the issue.
fedora-extras-announce-list(a)redhat.com will soon open, and will be used
by fedora.us Extras for the short-term. When Extras relaunches at
fedora.redhat.com, the list will be used for those announcements.
This is no longer far away, as we have servers online NOW, gafton and I
are working on CVS structure, and finalizing the Apache-like contributor
legal form. You will hear more about our progress within the next weeks
here.
Unfortunately hundreds of mail sent to the old Extras announce list went
into /dev/null due to the legacy mailman problem. Sorry about that. =(
