upgrading RH 9 system->Fedora with iso files and apt only

I have the yarrow's iso files on my HD in a RH9 system. Let's say I want to upgrade selected packages using an "apt-get install" pointing to my iso-mounted files, how do I do it? i.e I mount the iso into some /mnt/yarrow1, /mnt/yarrow 2 etc.. Then what is the complete procedure to make my apt look into my own HD to upgrade packages. Can anybody redirect me to the correct resource or some literature hanging on the web? Thanks. autoconf breakage on x86_64.

I don't know the right way to fix this, but something is definitely broken; and something needs to be fixed, one way or the other. The question is what exactly needs to be fixed. Consider something like this: LIBS="-lresolv $LIBS" AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC(res_query, AC_MSG_RESULT(yes), AC_MSG_RESULT(no)) Here's what happens on x86_64: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -I.. -I./.. conftest.c -lresolv >&5 /tmp/ccW7EeDX.o(.text+0x7): In function `main': /home/mrsam/src/courier/authlib/configure:5160: undefined reference to `res_query' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status configure:5147: $? = 1 configure: failed program was: [ blah blah blah ] | /* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2 | builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */ | char res_query (); | int | main () | { | res_query (); | ; | return 0; | } The same exact test on FC1 x86 will work. The reason appears to be that you have to #include <resolv.conf> on x86_64 in order to succesfully pull res_query() out of libresolv.so. You don't need to do this on x86, and the test program generated by AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC does not include any headers, but uses a manual prototype. So, what now?

APT repository problems with up2date

Hi, Before I start digging in the up2date code myself, maybe someone can comment on this: I have a problem when using up2date up2date with my self-created APT repositories. When updating, it complains about conflicting files: it just thinks that a long list of directories that are shared among packages conflict with each other. Apt-get itself (and synaptic) seems to work fine with the same repository, only with up2date there is a problem. Also, up2date with a yum repository of then same package set works fine, as does yum itself. FWIW: I generate my APT repositories with --flat --bloat. Recently the version of libgcrypt was increased to 1.1.94 as a result of this newpg would not build against the newer libgcrypt i sent an email to gcrypt-devel list and this is what i got back <quote> Don't build newpg at all. It has been superseded by gnupg-1.9.x . You would need an old libgcrypt < 1.1.42 to build it. The configure sscript was not able to detect newer versions with a changed API. </quote> we have a problem here seems we no longer need newpg but we need things it provides for gpgme gpgme03 cryptplug gpa kgpg (which doesnt complain so much just says its not there) to get these things it provides we need to go to the newer gnupg or we need to revert back to the older libgcrypt. being so late in the cycle i dont know which would be best. so i thought id ask before filling a bug against something. it does need to be fixed before final is out as people will complain if they cant decrypt email in kmail or mutt gpa doesnt work etc. i think we should probably go back to the old version of libgcrypt Dennis

udev in initrd

There are test packages in http://people.redhat.com/twoerner/UDEV/ for using udev in initrd with persistent devices. Usage ----- - If you want to enable udev in initrd, then install the test packages and create an initrd with mkinitrd. - If you want to turn off udev, set USE_UDEV="no" in /etc/sysconfig/udev. - For another udev root directory (not /dev) set udev_root="/some dir/" in /etc/udev/udev.conf - This will not disable udev in initrd. The result is an unusable initrd - For disabling persistent /dev filesystem set UDEV_KEEP_DEV="no" in /etc/sysconfig/udev. Your /dev filesystem will not be the same in inird and the running system. - You have to recreate the initrd after changing any of these options. Warnings -------- - The new mkinitrd is not tested heavily (especially lvm support). - It will not work with devfs. - Make a backup copy of the original initrd (best is to make an additional boot entry in grub with the new initrd) Information about udev and the new mkinitrd ------------------------------------------- The benefit of udev is that there are only those device nodes which are bound to devices in your computer and that you can have additional device naming schemes like 'by label' or 'by id'. However there is a small problem with dynamic device nodes: For all devices, which are not recognized before a specific module is loaded, there will be no device node until the driver is loaded either by hand of by a program. kudzu would be a good candidate for this, but it has to be started earlier, then. udev is using helpers for additional device naming schemes, which are c programs or shell scripts. Therefore it is necessary to put tools like sed, awk, grep and so on in the initrd. These programs are not small and the initrd would be very big. The solution for this is to use a static compiled busybox, which combines tiny versions of many utilities into a single executable. Thus the new mkinitrd is using busybox for the initrd with udev support. Disabling udev results in a normal initrd with nash. It is easy to modify mkinitrd to build the normal initrd with busybox. How does MIME handling exactly work?

What is the exact procedure that gnome-vfs2 (as in nautilus) uses to determine the mime-type? Apparently the mime types in /usr/share/mime-info (and in ~.gnome/mime-info) are no longer used. I noticed this, when I tried to create a mime type "application/mathematica" with extension "nb" for Mathematica notebooks. This shows up in gnome-file-types-properties, but other otherwise is completely ignored and gnomevfs-info file://$PWD/measure.nb simply shows: Name : measure.nb Type : Regular MIME type : text/plain So, is it true, that a user can assign an application to a mime type that already exists, but not create new ones? -- Gérard Milmeister Tannenrauchstrasse 35 8038 Zürich gemi(a)bluewin.ch

The Fedora Hardware Project - Update

Just a status update and a question to get some input. Been working on and off on the Fedora hardware project and the items required for the project discussed back in May. Blah Blah Blah, going along great blah blah blah will have a beta site out end of July early August *knock on wood* blah blah blah just Need to iron out some very ugly bugs and posting comments on configurations done first. hope everyone will contribute their thoughts now and then. My brain is throwing red flags up on the issue of site registration and whether or not it's need. I don't like the idea of having it. So I'm looking for suggestions because I don't want the site to become: a forum, or huge list of flame wars. Site is just a database of supported hardware and working configurations to get not supported hardware working. At least that was my take on the project. But if it must be there, I was thinking just for adding and posting configurations. Looking for thoughts, Ideas, or concerns. -- Scott Sloan <devscott(a)charter.net>

Tetex inter-dependencies: proposed changes

Hi, I've been looking a bit at the inter-dependencies that exist between the different tetex packages. F.e. the fact that tetex-xdvi currently needs tetex (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=11721) All this is caused because not all files have been moved into the correct packages. For some files this is rather obvious, for others it's more tricky to establish to which package they should belong. My proposal is to move a couple of files from the other tetex packages (mainly from tetex itself) to tetex-fonts, in essence making tetex-fonts a kind of tetex-common package. However no name change or split off is necessary. Dependencies would then become as follows: tetex, tetex-dvips and tetex-afm require tetex-fonts tetex-xdvi and tetex-latex require tetex-dvips (doesn't tetex require tetex-dvips? If it does drop dependency on -fonts, and -latex's dependency on -dvips.) tetex-latex requires tetex (need to investigate tetex-afm a little more) Changes to /usr/share/texmf: - All fonts, including sources and japanese (from tetex-dvips) fonts to tetex-fonts (/usr/share/texmf/fonts/*). Sources are needed to generate font definitions in /var/lib/tex. - /usr/share/texmf/fontname to tetex-fonts (not really necessary, but as tetex-fonts is the central package this is probably a good idea). - /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/XDvi is required by tetex, so can't move to tetex-xdvi. Move to tetex-fonts so it's available to both tetex and tetex-xdvi. - Parts of /usr/share/texmf/web2c to tetex-fonts, namely mf-nowin.base, mf.base, mf.pool, mfw.base, plain.base, mktex.opt, mktexdir, mktexdir.opt, mktexnam, mktexnam.opt and mktexupd. Necessary for creation of font definitions in /var/lib/texmf. - All .cnf and .cfg files to tetex-fonts. Changes to /usr/bin: - Move the following binaries to tetex-fonts (all but mfw from tetex): MakeTeXPK, access (needed by texhash), fmtutil, gftodvi, gftopk, gftype, gsftopk, inimf, kpsepath, kpsestat, kpsetool, kpsewhich, kpsexpand, mf, mf-nowin, mft, mfw (from tetex-xdvi), mktexfmt, mktexlsr, mktexmf, mktexpk, mktextfm, ps2pk, texhash(required by %post scripts) and virmf. Necessary for creation of font definitions in /var/lib/texmf. Changes to docs and man pages: - kpathsea and web2c info to tetex-fonts - relevant man pages to tetex-fonts Other changes: - libkpathsea.a and /usr/include/kpathsea headers to tetex-fonts (separate tetex-devel package?). - Cron job to remove unused font definition files to tetex-fonts. - /usr/share/texmf/ls-R and /var/lib/texmf/ls-R files to tetex-fonts. The above changes fix xdvi's dependency on tetex. A spec file (for FC 1) can be found attached to the above bug report. It's quite possible a few more files need to change packages before this is entirely correct. To test correctness of this spec file the various /var/lib/texmf/ directories need to be removed so they can be regenerated on (first) invocation of xdvi (or other programs). Signing an rpm package at build-time automatically

Hi there! When we built a package, we can sign it at build time by issuing the command: rpm -ba --sign file.spec and it will prompt for something like this: Enter pass phrase: <passphrase> (Not echoed) Now on my system I need to build rpm automatically ( without human intervention)! Is it possible to have my paraphrase being read in a file rather than me sitting in front of the computer and actually typing it? I know it's not a very good idea but my rpms need to be generated automatically daily via cron, and I can't sit behind my pc and type the paraphrase each time one rpm is being built. Can I avoid the prompting of the paraphrase if I want to sign my packages at build-time and everything be done automatically? Thanks. Are there plans to release it It's been a couple months since I was last harping on the list for some feedback from the powers that be at RedHat regarding the official Fedora Extra's infrastructure. Has there been progress? This issue really needs to be resolved, even if the resolution is "we will eventually take over the fedora.us infrastructure as it stands and abide by the policies decided upon by the fedora.us community" or the other extreme of "we don't like the idea of an official Fedora Extra's after all, do your own thing", or more likely something in between. --erik

GIF support

Hi Everyone, I'm interested in knowing when GIF support will be re-included into packages like PHP, ImageMagick and other image processing and generation tools. GIF, as you might know was covered by patents until the 20th of June 2004. The patents are now expired worldwide and gif code could be easily re-activated in libs like GD and PHP. It was always there, it was just not included into the packages because of the patent problems. So, are there any plans to include gif libs into any packages? It would be great if someone could give me some feedback on this. Hi, as will be able to see in todays rawhide, we're experimenting with adding a patch for gpg-signed kernel modules. The idea behind this is for the administrator to *optionally* [1] restrict the set of modules that can be linked into the kernel. In selinux context one can even eventually allow different security contexts to load different subsets of modules, by restricting certain contexts to a predefined gpg keys only. Packaging: Where to install demo apps to?

Hi, I am preparing a package for submission to Fedora.US/Fedora Extras. This package comes with a couple of demo applications I plan to put into a separate sub-package. Where to install these applications to on FC? What do Fedora conventions recommend? IMO, they should not be installed to bindir (/usr/bin), because these applications are "not really useful". Installing them to datadir (/usr/share) or pkgdatadir (/usr/share/<package>) also does not seem appropriate, because these files are architecture dependent. Remains $libexecdir/<package>. Ralf

I've fixed the gtk2 wrt to being parallel-installable on biarch systems like ppc/ppc64. The changes involved moving the arch-dependent config files to another directory and adding -32/-64 suffixes to the installed binaries. This means in particular that packages which install input modules or pixbuf loaders need changes to their postinstall and postuninstall hooks. To make this easier, the gtk2 package now installs two scripts, update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders and update-gtk-immodules, which expect to be given the host triplet and figure out the binary to call and the config file location based on that. So, if one of your packages installs an input module or pixbuf loader, please update the post hooks accordingly. You can look at librsvg2 or im-sdk for examples. Regards, Matthias

User mountable ISO images

Would it be possible to make .iso images user mountable? I noticed that while FC2 contains a copy of compat-libstdc++ (7.4.2-2.96.126) that the current development RPMS are missing this. Is this change slated for FC3 and RHEL 4? I still have legacy binaries here that require compat-libstdc++ making this change most unwanted. Jack

FIX (sort of): install setup screen freezes

First thing it does is puts you into a X-gui based set of windows requiring that you add a user, etc. There is NO way to do this in text-mode. It also starts you at run-level 5. So now the system freezes having spent 1 hour installing it, thinking I was cleaver because I avoided using the X-gui based install setup screens only to find that the first boot puts one right back into the X-gui setup system and it freezes. Curiously, if I then turn off the machine a try again (having no completed the initial boot setup), it starts but hangs after printing the message: Enable Swap space If the turn off the machine and try again, it puts me into the X-gui setup system, and so on; each reboot alternates between the X-gui setup that freezes and the system hanging after printing the swap message. So, I can install fedora 2, I just can not get past the first reboot. My solution, re-install redhat 9. Richard

Hi, on my internet router i have install the latest samba server from fc1. I share 2 directories in my network. When i connect with Windows XP, i can copy files greater 2 GByte to the network mountet smb directory. When i use the latest fc1 smbclient, it is not possible for me to copy the same file to this directory. Has the smbclient on linux a 2GByte boundary? -- Nine (not 9) Never trust a hippie

fix for dual boot CHS not working

Hi, I have tried the solution posted on that mailing list to recover dual booting with windows 2000 and it doesn't work. The computer is a Toshiba Portégé 3480CT. Windows 2000 is on the first partition, in a FAT32. I first used a self compiled parted to shrink the fat, the partition table was modified and windows 2000 was unbootable. Then I installed fedora core 2. The partition table was remodified. I can do anything on that computer there is nothing valuable on it. The fedora core 2 is up to date. The windows friendly CHS is 2432,255,63. Disk 1 install setup screen freezes

I've got an HP 760n. It can not boot from CD, so I copied vmlinuz and initrd.img from isolinux into /boot and modified grub.conf. During the boot the mouse, card and display are correctly recognized. The problem: The mouse/keyboard/window freezes within the first couple of install setup screens. The furthest I got was entering in my ip address. The earliest freeze occurred when the mouse (as a pointer, after its an 'X') first appears. Any hints as to whats up? Thanks. Richard

gstreamer-plugins also depends on gtk+, when it shouldn't. After doing some digging, ldd revealed that the offending file is /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.8/libgstdvdec.so , the libdv decoder. Doing more digging, I discovered that that's because libdv's pkgconfig file, /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libdv.pc , incorrectly claims that it requires glib and gtk+. Actually, the only thing that requires GTK+ is the playdv tool that we ship in libdv-tools. However, a bug in libdv source causes it to pick up those requirements for its pkgconfig file. This has been discussed on the libdv mailing lists, with a patch here, http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=4431792&forum_id=5458 and the patch incorporated into upstream CVS: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/libdv/libdv/libdv.pc.in This patch should be incorporated until the next upstream release. If we fix this, we can revert the change in Bug 123367 to add gtk+-devel to libdv-devel's dependencies. As an added bonus, it will eliminate the bogus gtk+ and glib dependencies from gstreamer-plugins, and anything else which uses libdv, once gstreamer-plugins is rebuilt. John Thacker

Hi Ville, I didn't know that these packages existed already. My objective was really to release RPM-s on my own libdigidoc library and gdigidoc GUI applications that need these packages. This application might (?) work also with Finnish ID cards since it uses (can use any pkcs11 driver really) opensc library. You can find more info about the OpenXAdES format that we are using here http://www.openxades.org. We intend to add other features like cryptography too. Right now it's just a digital siganture application. The modified opensc library I was offering here has been patched by Marie Fischer and Martin Paljak <martin(a)paljak.pri.ee> to support Estonian ID cards. They made some modifications to the code and some ATR strings in the opensc.conf to init the card. Please consult with Martin Paljak as he has developed the last version of this opensc branch. I'd like to see this suff being incorporated in opensc main line and released. Ok how can I help you test these packages you mentioned? I haven't really developed too low-level opensc code yet but I can at least test this stuff. Please provide some more details on how to get the packages from bugzilla.fedora.com. I did a search on opensc and found nothing. Do I need a special user/registration etc. Would you be interested in testing gdigidoc? I'll try to provide Finnish locale support as well. I'm very interested in OmniKey drivers. I have such a device on my laptop and this darn thing prevents me from upgrading the laptop to FC2. It works on Mandrake 9.2 though. I've seen only cm4000 drivers version 2.3.2 on www.omnikey.com. Do they have anything newer? regards, Veiko

external modules issues

Hi, im trying to build an external module for kernel 2.6.7-1.441 the module builds fine when i insert it i get /sbin/modprobe spca50x FATAL: Error inserting spca50x (/lib/modules/2.6.7-1.441/kernel/drivers/usb/media/spca50x.ko): Invalid module format dmesg shows spca50x: version magic '2.6.7-1.441 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.3' should be '2.6.7-1.441 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4' i changed HOSTCC in /lib/modules/2.6.7-1.441/build/Makefile to be gcc34 thinking it should then build the module using gcc 3.4 but on rebuild i get the same issue. it was working fine not sure when it stopped. ok so the kernel in the build system is using gcc 3.4 to build the kernel. but changing the external module makefile still seems to use gcc 3.3 do we need to change something in the kernel build process so that module building works? do we need to change gcc to 3.4? any ideas? When will LD_ASSUME_KERNEL var be phased out?

I'm under the impression that RedHat implemented the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable as a clever hack to ease the introduction of the NPTL-enabled kernel and libs with RedHat 9. On the other hand, some development shops I'm working with are (naively?) assuming that LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is a permanent feature that will allow them to run "properly". The questions: - How long will two threading systems be supported via LD_ASSUME_KERNEL? - Will FC3 (and RHEL4?) also support regression via LD_ASSUME_KERNEL? Thanks, -Bob Arendt

The resultant kernel and modules are fine FWIW, so no problem there, just the size is the issue. Preliminary OpenAFS 1.3.x RPM for Fedora Core 2

I know OpenAFS isn't well-loved at Red Hat, but we're kinda dependent on it here. (Maybe the in-kernel AFS will be a large part of our solution in the future, but it needs a lot more work.) And, as of, um, two days ago, OpenAFS CVS + some patches builds and runs on Fedora Core 2. So, I've put together a preliminary RPM, and I'd like some help making it as perfect as possible. <http://www.mattdm.org/misc/openafs/> Please read the README.RPM and TODO.RPM files included in the src.rpm. (Also conveniently on the above web site, which is a little ugly because I'm lazy.) Specific caveats: it's very cutting edge, and some things (SMP, for example) don't work at all. You may get PAG support if you rebuild your kernel to export the syscall table -- I haven't tried. Otherwise, you won't. Any bugs in the new init script or in the specfile, or suggestions for improvements, please let me know! Hi, all, I wrote a small program to handle thousands of TCP connections and tens of segments each second on each connection. To do this, I use rtsignal to notify application when socket is ready for read. The basic idea of this program is like this: After program start, block the SIGRTMIN and SIGIO in the main thread by: sigset_t sset; sigemptyset(&sset); sigaddset( &sset, SIGRTMIN ); sigaddset( &sset, SIGIO ); pthread_sigmask( SIG_BLOCK, &sset, NULL ); In one thread, accept the connection request and set signal on it: ... Int fd = accept( ......); flags = fcntl(sock, F_GETFL, 0); fcntl(sock, F_SETFL, flags | O_NONBLOCK | O_ASYNC ); fcntl(sock, F_SETSIG, SIGRTMIN ); fcntl(sock, F_SETOWN, sigpid ); ... (I can see the number in /proc/sys/kernel/rtsig-nr is increasing rapidly). At last, the queue overflow, and the sigwaitinfo returns a SIGIO. My environments is FC2 (2.6.6-1.435smp) on an old dual P3 Xeon, glibc-2.3.3-27. This program can work in RHEL 3.0 AS (2.4.21-9.ELsmp, glibc-2.3.2-95.6). Has anybody ever meet the same problem as me? Initrd Help - Upgrading the kernel

Hi, I'm sorry for posting this but I'd like to ask for a favor. I'm stuck and unable to upgrade the kernel. That's because the initrd (which I need to load xfs) is generated post-install, and losetup does not work on my system. It fails with memlock: Unable to lock into memory. I filed a bug, but after some googling around I found a message from Warren Togami that this issue is kernel-related and has been fixed in later releases. The problem is that I'm stuck at this particular release (414) with no other kernel. Knoppix chroot has some permission issue that won't let me do anything useful. So the favor I'd like to ask is: can someone send me the generated initrd for the 448 kernel, with the xfs module in particular on it? I don't do raid or lvm or anything strange like that. I'd really appreciate some help. I'll test SElinux and the kernel and everything afterwards...

packages that BuildRequire: gettext that need to change to gettext-devel

Hi, I recently got a bug (#125042) that suggested that gstreamer should BuildRequire cvs. This sounded very odd, so I investigated a bit. It turns out that we invoke the gettext program "autopoint", which internally uses cvs (which seems crack to me, but that's another issue). The "autopoint" program is presently included in the "gettext" package. Since it's really autopoint that requires CVS, it seems to me that the package containing autopoint should BuildRequire: cvs. However, since gettext is essentially part of the base system, this would force cvs in too. So as an alternative, I'd like to move autopoint (and probably more development tools) into gettext-devel. See bug #126071. This brings up the main point: a lot of packages presently BuildRequire: gettext, and I think all of them will need to change to gettext-devel. Watch Out... missing 'localhost'

Please be on the look out for some network configuration tool in FC2 that leaves /etc/hosts without "localhost" entries. I just discovered that my system /etc/hosts was blank with only the following lines after using netconfig and neat several times switching between DHCP, static, and dialup networking... so I don't know what caused it. # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. This seems to have exposed problems of robustness in services IIim and sendmail. Investigating those now. Warren Togami wtogami(a)redhat.com

Rawhide signatures

When I run up2date, I keep getting "Package xxx does not have a GPG signature, Aborting." Are these packages really unsigned or do I not have the right signature imported into RPM? -- Brian Gerst
