cannot link module as non root
by Patrice Dumas
Hi,
As Warren asked, I report a failure to build a module as a non root user
with kernel 2.6.5-1.327, as a follow up on bug
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=117645
It has improved a lot though. Now the compilation seems to be done right,
but stage 2 fails.
As a user, I get:
CC [M] /home/pat/src/eagleusb/driver/eu_eth.o
LD [M] /home/pat/src/eagleusb/driver/eagle-usb.o
Building modules, stage 2.
MODPOST
/bin/sh: line 1: ./.__modpost.cmd: Permission denied
make[2]: *** [__modpost] Error 1
make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2
And as root it is:
CC [M] /home/pat/src/eagleusb/driver/eu_eth.o
LD [M] /home/pat/src/eagleusb/driver/eagle-usb.o
Building modules, stage 2.
MODPOST
LD [M] /home/pat/src/eagleusb/driver/eagle-usb.ko
I attached the full make output. make.pat as a user, make.root as root.

using a bittorent based network for rpms integrated in up2date,
by Kristof Vansant
What about using a P2P based network for sharing rpms instead of central
servers and mirrors.
Using bittorent or edonkey protocol. This would safe a lot of bandwidth and
costs for the hosts (mirrors etc.) Downloads would go a lot faster.
I don't mind being a "server" for others as long as I can say how mutch is
uploaded and shared etc.
Plus being able to turn it off if I really want to. Share code, share
bandwidth :)

kernel version numbers
by Craig Cruden
I know I have seen this several times before....
sometimes I see it in the build notice, sometimes not.
Anyways, is there a file in the installation of either
the source or the stock kernel that summarizes how it
maps to the kernel.org version.
I was thinking that if this does not exist, maybe
something like:
"build-2.6.5-1.332" that is a text file containing
which file it is built upon like "linux-2.6.5-rc2-bk1"
and a list of patches that are applied against that
"base".

Compile Fedora kernel
by Lercio Teotonio Gontijo
Hello All,
it is My first question, please sory for my bad english. :-(
With previous version of RedHat Kernel named as kernel-2.2.1.src.rpm I
installed it using rpm -ivh command and simple compiled using command
rpmbuild -ba or rpmbuild -ta and the kernel-2.2.1.rpm was created with
the porpouse of using to install distrib. based on RedHat or Fedora.
When installing-compiling kernel named as kernel-2.6.3.src.rpm it did
not create the kernel-2.6.3.rpm.
How to create this package based on news Fedora Kernel????
Thanks

jigdo
by Michael A. Peters
Has Fedora considered using jigdo for distribution of the iso's?
It works very well for fetching debian iso's - and you can use mirrors
that don't have iso files - as the iso files themselves are generated on
the end user machine.
It would also mean that stable versions of fedora could have the iso's
updated as package bug fixes come out, so that 3 months after release -
a user doesn't spend hours of bandwidth getting CD's that are going to
require additional bandwidth to bring to patch level.

Upcoming FC1 desktop updates
by Warren Togami
In about a week I intend on issuing updates for FC1 control-center,
gnome-vfs2 and htmlview that backport the Preferred Application fixes
from FC2. These fixes were extremely simple and very well tested, and
corrects the very common problem of user applications not using the
chosen browser or mail client when URLs are clicked. Specifically these
changes I want to backport:
* gnome-vfs2: Default gconf schema that defines the "about:" type.
* gnome-vfs2: Default gconf schema pointing to mozilla, so default
Desktop is guaranteed to run a browser that is installed.
* control-center: Preferred Application chooser sets http, https, about,
and unknown gconf keys.
* control-center: Preferred Application chooser shows only installed
applications, rather than a hard coded list. (Note that I need help
verifying that there were no end-user visible string changes that would
complicate things for non-English locales. I suspect this is not an
issue for this simple application.)
* htmlview: Use the above defined Preferred Applications in the "right" way.
* htmlview: Avoids known infinite loops.
* htmlview: Prevents invalid browser configurations, forcing user to
choose a different browser.
These backported improvements also will simplify transition to FC2 later
for user desktop profiles, as all behavior should behave identically.
I am warning the lists a week in advance so that people may suggest
other "known good" small fixes for these three packages. For example
someone suggested a minor x86_64 crash fix for control-center. Please
suggest other fixes.
