emu10k1 broken in rawhide?
by Steve Bergman
I'm running the current rawhide and sound does not work.
The modules loads without errors, or at least none are reported on the
modprobe command line.
But catting to /dev/dsp yields:
-bash: /dev/dsp: No such device
I do see this in dmesg:
request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- sound-slot-0. error = 256
request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- char-major-10-134. error = 256
request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- sound-slot-0. error = 256

changeloop brokenness test case
by Jeremy Katz
(Background: Since Red Hat Linux 7.0, we've added a kernel patch to
allow switching the backing store for a loopback device which gets used
so that CD installs can switch CDs. This has been ported to 2.6, but
currently isn't working and is blocking test1. In the interest of maybe
more eyes seeing something, here's the test case I sent to Al)
Attached is a simple test program that can be used in reproduce the hang
when we changeloop.
Steps are
1) Copy some image you can loopback mount to /tmp/loop.img (doesn't
matter what, you can even just dd /dev/zero and mke2fs it)
2) losetup /dev/loop0 /tmp/loop.img
3) mount /dev/loop0 /mnt/tmp -o loop,ro
4) cp /tmp/loop.img /tmp/new.img
5) ./testchangeloop /dev/loop0 /tmp/new.img
And watch the process spin in disk wait

rawhide missing header.info for yum
by Chuck Anderson
Since last night or the day before, yum no longer works against
rawhide. This is due to a missing header.info file in the headers
subdirectories. Did the yum-arch fail to run for some reason?

Updating RPMs using binary deltas (demo 2)
by M A Young
Improved versions of my RPM deltaing scripts can be downloaded from
http://toast.debian.net/~may/rpmdelta/ . The new scripts use C programs
(very strongly based on files from the rpm source) which uncompress
and recompress the archive part of rpms while leaving the header intact
- this is probably the best way to handle rsyncing of rpms as well.
There is now only one delta file, and a very slight gain in the file size
of the delta. However, it should be more efficient in the temporary
filespace used, and creating the delta should be quicker.

/etc/ntp/drift.TEMP
by Paul Heinlein
My FC 1 log files are littered with entries like
ntpd[1747]: can't open /etc/ntp/drift.TEMP: Permission denied
My Red Hat machines have /etc/ntp owned by ntp:ntp, but Fedora hosts
have it owned by root:root. Is anyone else seeing this?

Kernel build failure
by David Rigler
Hello
i used yum to download the kernel source which is
linux-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl. i then copied config-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl from
/boot to /usr/src/linux-2.4/.config. Ran 'make oldconfig', 'make
bzImage' ... etc BUT it does not produce a working kernel. During boot
'jbd' and 'ext3' modules complain about wrong version. The're for
....2149.nptl not the new ...2149.nptlcustom
The one possible strange thing is that 'make modules_install' ends like this
mkdir -p pcmcia; \
find kernel -path '*/pcmcia/*' -name '*.o' | xargs -i -r ln -sf ../{}\
pcmcia
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map
2.4.22-1.2149.nptlcustom; fi
[root@TESTBOX linux-2.4]#
as if that last line wasnt executed ?? and the script bombed ??
Any ideas whats going on ??

2004-01-30 FC2 test1 status
by Elliot Lee
The current status of the FC2 test1 release is that this kernel bug needs
fixing, and then we should be good to go. Any help fixing the problem
would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,

Due to a variety of circumstances, yes.
Attached is a simple test program that can be used in reproducing.

And watch it hang
