Self-Introduction: Thorsten Leemhuis

Full legal name:
Thorsten Leemhuis
Country, City:
Hannover, Germany
Company or School:
Interest is private, if you want to know where I spent my days ask you
favorite search-engine ;-)
Goals:
Build and QA packages that I use myself that are currently missing and
may (or may not) be usable for others.
Historical qualifications:
None appreciable ;-) Okay, some real info: After 10 years I changed
from OS/2 to Red Hat Linux in the beginning of 2000. Good in
bash-programming, some skills in java. Don't know if I ever find enough
time to really learn C or Python. Lot of interest and know-how in Linux
compatible hardware and how to make it work.

Building a module outside the source tree
by Willem Riede
Building a module outside the source tree is supposed to be possible with:
make -C/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl SUBDIRS=$PWD modules
and a simple Makefile like:
#
# Makefile for osst
#
CFLAGS_osst.o = -I$(TOPDIR)/drivers/scsi
obj-m += osst.o
include $(TOPDIR)/Rules.make
(if I'm not mistaken, that is...)
But when I do so (as ordinary user), I get permission problems
make: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl'
/bin/sh: line 1: .ver: Permission denied
make: *** [include/linux/version.h] Error 1
make: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl'
What am I missing?? FYI, here is what make wants to do - change all sorts
of things in the source tree, which I really wanted to keep in sync with
the rpm, except for copying the right .config in place, that is...
[wriede@betatest osst]$ make -n -C/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl SUBDIRS=$PWD modules

how upgrade works?
by Ritesh Bharati
hi,
I was trieng to upgrade of 7.3 to FC1 using apt , Which failed , then
was wondering how FC1 upgrade process work.
I have rh7.3 installed and I tried to upgrade it to FC1 using apt-get
-f -y -d -o dist-upgrade Dir::Cache::Archives=/temp/upgrade . BUT it
failed with pre-depends . I tried to Hold those packahes in apt
upgrade, no use.
I tried to apt-get install on all installed packages on m y RH7.3...
again i got pre-dependency list.. :)... dependency cycle....
There are may rpms in RH7.3 whcih are replaced by other rpms in FC1.
Can somebody throw some light on ... How pre-dendency / dependency cycle
is taken care by FC1 upgrade process. How upgrade works ??
This could lead to hope of light to other developes who want to upgrade
their boxes using apt-get/yum ..
thanks in advance

Re: I gotta ask this ...
by Fezzik Giant
Yes, I've recently looked at the LFS book. I wish it was scripted :)
Right now the package dependencies are getting in my way (in terms of a
manual process). I'm thinking of writing a script that extracts the
'BuildRequires' tags, creates a directed graph of the build dependencies (as
different from the installation dependencies), does a topological sort on
the graph and kicks off the build process.
I would love to get some comments on this approach. Hopefully it's been done
and someone can send a link.
Cheers!

php cli version
by Claus Beerta
Hi!
There seems to be no Version of PHP available which is only for cli
usage, i.E build without support for Apache. The PHP package for Fedora
Core 1 ships with the cli version, but debends on apache.
Is this the way it is supposed to be? I'd rather have a stand-alone
version of PHP for shell-scripting too :)
Regards, Claus

My point also. Though due to nss, it is not needed, it might complicate
things, it's yet-another-really-not-needed-daemon, overkill for most
users.
Using something like libuser, it would be easy to have a unified
userinterface for users/groups regarless of wether they are in text file
or an ldap server.
The question is ofcourse, _why_ should ldap be used as a backend for
this, for _all_ users ?

The problem with ide-scsi is that it's needed for tapes.
Burning is easy.

FC2 and general LDAP Support
by Roland Käser
Hi all
What about moving the user database to LDAP for the FC2 release? It
would be possible to integrate also the samba part of the user records
directly to the LDAP directory. The only thing we need is a useful ldap
administration frontend and the command line tools for creating and
modifying the user records from the command line. The most of the
command line tools are shipped with the samba source code. It it is
desired, i can make a RPM for that.
Greetings
Roland
