F30 System-Wide Change proposal: GNOME 3.32
by Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/GNOME3.32
GNOME 3.32
Summary
Update GNOME to the latest upstream release, 3.32.
Owner
* Name: Kalev Lember
* Email: klember(a)redhat.com
* Product: Workstation
* Responsible WG: Workstation
Detailed Description
The new features for 3.32 include: TBD
The schedule for GNOME 3.32 releases doesn't align perfectly with
Fedora 30 and we may need to request Freeze Exceptions during the
release process. QA and GNOME packagers are familiar with the process
and should be able to make a good call when it's appropriate to
request an exception.
Right now it seems likely that we need an exception to get GNOME
3.31.92 into F30 Beta a few days after the freeze has started, to make
sure we get the maximum amount of testing for the new code that is
going to be shipped in F30. Final 3.32.0 is just a week after that
(with just cricital bug fixes and translation updates compared to
3.31.92 rc) and may require another freeze exception.

Benefit to Fedora
Fedora stays in sync with upstream and gets the latest features and bug fixes.
Scope
* Proposal owners:
** Keep existing GNOME packages updated
** Package new applications and new dependencies of existing GNOME
packages for GNOME 3.32
** Work with QA to fix any release blocking regressions
** Work with upstream to fix any release blocking regressions
* Other developers: N/A
* Release engineering:
** Impact check: https://pagure.io/releng/issue/8030
** Create f30-gnome side tag after F30 is branched from rawhide
** List of deliverables: N/A
* Policies and guidelines: N/A
* Trademark approval: N/A
Upgrade/compatibility impact
Upgrading from GNOME 3.30 to 3.32 should be seamless for users.
How To Test
Install Workstation, make sure that the desktop and all apps are
usable. Participate in GNOME 3.32 test day (TBD).
We are continuously keeping GNOME in Rawhide (and Branched once it's
branched from Rawhide) up to date as upstream releases 3.31.x
development snapshots, leading up to the final 3.32 release. Everybody
can participate in the testing by installing Fedora development
releases on personal desktop computers and reporting regressions.
For issues that are not Fedora-specific, the best place to report
issues and reach developers is usually at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME
User Experience
Notable additions or changes to the GNOME user experience in 3.32 include:
* TBD
Dependencies
N/A
Contingency Plan
GNOME 3.32 will be released in March 2019 and fits well into Fedora 30
schedule. In case of issues with individual modules that aren't either
released in time or aren't deemed suitable for Fedora 30, we'll
continue using the GNOME 3.30 versions of these modules.
* Contingency mechanism: The Workstation WG evaluates the GNOME 3.32
prerelease first before beta freeze and reverts individual changes as
needed, and then does another evaluation before the final freeze.
* Contingency deadline: beta freeze
* Blocks release? Yes
* Blocks product? Workstation

Orphaned packages to be retired
by Miro Hrončok
The following packages are orphaned and will be retired when they
are orphaned for six weeks, unless someone adopts them. If you know for sure
that the package should be retired, please do so now with a proper reason:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_remove_a_package_at_end_of_life
I plan to retire packages that were already announced 3 times next Monday.
Unorphan/unretire packages at https://pagure.io/releng/issues
Note: If you received this mail directly you (co)maintain one of the affected
packages or a package that depends on one. Please adopt the affected package or
retire your depending package to avoid broken dependencies, otherwise your
package will be retired when the affected package gets retired.

F30 System-Wide Change proposal: Switch cryptsetup default metadata
format to LUKS2
by Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/SwitchCryptsetupDefaultToLUKS2
Summary
The change switches Fedora system default metadata format for full
disk encryption from LUKS1 to LUKS2. It mostly involves cryptsetup
package and Anaconda installer so that both creates new LUKS2
containers by default.
Owner
* Name: Ondřej Kozina and Vendula Poncova
* Email: okozina AT redhat DOT com, vponcova AT redhat DOT com
Detailed Description
The LUKS2 is evolution of current LUKS standard for software full disk
encryption. It's enabler for new features: introduces new Argon2 kdf
(alongside current PBKDF2) for keyslots, better support for
auto-activation, support for wrapped key ciphers (paes cipher),
experimental authenticated encryption. Plus coming new features
(online-reencryption).
The LUKS2 format is available and supported since cryptsetup release
2.0.0 (included in Fedora 28).
Scope
* Proposal owners:
Ensure LUKS2 is declared default in upstream (owner is involved in
upstream development). Currently upstream aims for LUKS2 being default
in cryptsetup-2.1 (next release). We can switch it even before
cryptsetup 2.1 release by overriding the default via configuration
switch, but owner would prefer upstream default way.
* Other developers:
Installer (Anaconda & co) should adapt to the change (and create new
LUKS2 containers by default if user selects "encrypted storage" during
installation).
* Release engineering: #8028
** List of deliverables: N/A
* Policies and guidelines:
* Trademark approval: N/A
Upgrade/compatibility impact
There should be none with regard to currently supported Fedora
distributions. Both Fedora 28 and 29 provides cryptsetup-2.0.6 (at
least via updates streams) that is fully compatible with LUKS2 format.
LUKS1 stays to be fully supported even with LUKS2 being new default.
How To Test
Basically there will be two areas to test:
* cryptsetup luksFormat command creates LUKS2 devices by default
* Anaconda installs on LUKS2 devices by default when users selects
"encrypted storage" option.
In general this test plan should not cover bugs related to LUKS2
format itself. Those bugs should be covered by development testsuite
shipped with cryptsetup package.
User Experience
The everyday experience should not be affected by the change in any
way. The basic LUKS2 operations (open, close, add new keyslots, remove
keyslot) is handled via same CLI.
More experienced users gain access to new features with default
installation as stated in detailed description.
Dependencies
Currently only Anaconda installer. It would be inconvenient to install
Fedora (encrypted storage) using different LUKS format by default if
cryptsetup used LUKS2. The contact person is listed among Owners of
this change.
Contingency Plan
* Contingency mechanism: Stay with LUKS1 format as default
* Contingency deadline: Beta freeze
* Blocks release? No
* Blocks product? N/A

F30 System-Wide Change proposal: Flicker Free Boot
by Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FlickerFreeBoot
Summary
Make Fedora Workstation boot graphically smooth, without the display
briefly turning off and without any abrupt graphical transitions.
Owner
* Name: Hans de Goede
* Email: hdegoede(a)redhat.com
Detailed Description
A lot of work to make flickerfree boot possible has already been done,
see the Hidden Grub Menu change page and
this blog post. This
change is about getting the final bits in place, this consists of 2
parts:
Part 1 is to enable the i915 drivers fastboot behavior by default in
coordination with the i915 upstream developers and the Fedora kernel
team.
Part 2 is [https://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/19673.html a new
plymouth theme] which incorporates the firmware's bootsplash image for
a smooth transition from the firmware bootsplash to plymouth. This new
theme is being created with input from the Fedora and GNOME design
inputs. Specifically it will follow
[https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/OS/BootProgress these GNOME design Boot
Progress mockups].
Here and here are some videos showing a flicker free boot with an early
version of the plymouth theme and
here is a screenshot of the diskunlock dialog in a newer version of
the theme. Please keep in mind this is still a work in progress.
Benefit to Fedora
A smooth boot process will make Fedora look better, more professional
and polished and will lead to a better end-user experience.
Scope
* Proposal owners:
# Work with i915 upstream and Fedora kernel team to
# Finish new plymouth theme and add it to the Fedora plymouth package
# Add the Fedora logo watermark used in the theme to fedora-logos
(copy existing fedora-gdm-logo.png to where plymouth looks for the
watermark image)
* Other developers: N/A
* Release engineering:
** List of deliverables: all
* Policies and guidelines: The policies and guidelines do not need to
be updated.
* Trademark approval: Not needed for this Change.
Upgrade/compatibility impact
The plan is to move users who are using the default charge plymouth
theme automatically over to the new theme. Users who have selected a
different plymouth theme themselves will keep their selection.
How To Test
# Take a machine with i915 graphics (amd/nvidia graphics will still
see the monitor turn off briefly for now)
# Do a fresh install of Fedora Workstation, replacing any other OS on
the machine (so single boot not multiboot)
# Reboot, check that the monitor stays on at all time and that all
graphics transitions until gdm is shown are smooth
User Experience
Single OS Workstation installs boot moothly using a new modern theme
all the way into the graphical login manager (gdm).
Dependencies
None
Contingency Plan
* Contingency mechanism:
# If enabling i915 fastboot by default is causing regressions, disable it again
# If the new plymouth theme is broken, revert back to the old charge theme
* Contingency deadline: Beta Freeze
* Blocks release? No
* Blocks product? Workstation
Documentation
See my blog post on this.

F30 System-Wide Change proposal: uEFI for ARMv7
by Ben Cotton
(This change was originally proposed for Fedora 29, but was pulled
from that release. The Change proposal is unchanged, but I am
re-circulating it for visibility.)
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/uEFIforARMv7
Summary
Move to uEFI as the default boot mechanism for ARMv7 devices.
Owner
* Name: Peter Robinson
* Email: pbrobinson at fedoraproject dot org
Detailed Description
Currently ARMv7 uses extlinux to boot the kernel on ARMv7. This has
served us very well and has allowed us to standardise the ARMv7 boot
process with the vast majority of devices booting this way OOTB due to
the support being in a wide variety of u-boot releases. Over recent
years there have been a number of improvement to uEFI including robust
support in u-boot. We've supported uEFI on aarch64 as the only way of
booting Fedora supporting both Tianocore, proprietary uEFI
implementations and since Fedora 27 we've supported uEFI via u-boot
too. The uEFI provided by u-boot is now stable enough that we can now
move ARMv7 to this method too allowing us to move ARMv7 to grub2-efi
and have a single standard booth path/stack for both ARMv7 and
aarch64.
Benefit to Fedora
This allows ARMv7 to move to grub2 providing the same experience to
ARMv7 users as all other architectures across the distribution. It
simplifies a number of software stacks across the distribution due to
being able to use a single install/support/upgrade path as well as
providing a single set of docs.
Scope
* Proposal owners: Patches, updates to the process, testing
* Other developers: System component owners will need to review and
merge patches for certain components.
* Release engineering: #7606 (a

Upgrade/compatibility impact
Upgrades from prior versions of Fedora will continue to work as they
do currently. Devices booting with extlinux will continue to upgrade
and work as planned. For recent (F-25 and later) clean installs there
will be a documented migration process for those that wish to migrate
to grub2 boot process. For older installs (those without a VFAT
partition for firmware) will need to do a clean install. Devices with
non Fedora built u-boot will need to ensure they have a recent enough
u-boot to support the required uEFI functionality.
How To Test
The process for testing will be the same as aarch64. This process will
be further updated and expanded once all the components are in place
and the final process is known.
User Experience
The user experience will be the same as uEFI on aarch64 and x86_64
with the grub2 menu and features. This will provide a consistent
experience across all Fedora architectures and resolves a number of
issues seen with the basic extlinux menu system on ARMv7.
Dependencies
There's patches need for the following software in Fedora:
* anaconda stack - anaconda/blivet/lorax
* build dependencies - oz/imagefactory
* grub2-efi build for ARMv7
* support in virt stack - virt-manager/virt-install
Contingency Plan
* Contingency mechanism: Revert back to current extlinux boot process.
The support for this process will remain and these images will
continue to be built along side the new images until we're certain the
new boot process is robust.
* Contingency deadline: Beta Freeze
* Blocks release? Yes
* Blocks product? IoT
Documentation
Yes. There will need to be a review of the documentation pertaining to
ARMv7, in a lot of cases this will be deleting the old process so the
universal distribution defaults are the only docs.
Release Notes
To be written once process is complete

Detailed Description
Rebase of Golang package to upcoming version 1.12 in Fedora 30. Golang
1.12 is schedule to be released in Feb.
Due to current nature of Go packages, rebuild of dependent package
will be required to pick up the changes.
Benefit to Fedora
Staying closely behind upstream by providing latest release of golang,
which includes performance improvements and improvements in support
for currently supported platforms(support for new instructions) among
other bug fixes and new features. For complete list of changes see
upstream change notes at https://tip.golang.org/doc/go1.12 . In result
Fedora will be providing solid development platform for Go language.
Scope
* Proposal owners: Rebase golang package in f30, help with resolving
possible issues found during package rebuilds.
* Other developers: fix possible issues with help from golang maintainers
* Release engineering: Rebuild of dependent packages in side tag.

F30 System-Wide Change Proposal: Fully remove deprecated and unsafe
functions from libcrypt
by Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FullyRemoveDeprecatedAndUnsafeFunc...
Summary
This change is about removing binary support for deprecated and unsafe
functions and bumping libcrypt.so to libcrypt.so.2.
Owner
* Name: Björn Esser <besser82(a)fedoraproject.org>
Detailed Description
In Fedora 28 we replaced glibc's libcrypt with the fully binary
compatible libcrypt library from the external libxcrypt project.
There are certain interfaces (encrypt, encrypt_r, setkey, setkey_r)
that are mandatory by POSIX or various other standards.
At the time those interfaces have been implemented they internally
relied on using the DES encryption algorithm, that today is widely
considered unsecure and insufficient for applications which require
sane data encryption. There are various recommendations new written
code should not use them anymore.
For keeping binary backwards compatibility we made sure the libcrypt
library still provides those interfaces for existing applications, but
code cannot be compiled against them anymore. For that reason there
is no application left in Fedora that uses them. With the latest
release of glibc, its upstream developers made sure those interfaces
cannot be compiled against their libcrypt anymore, too.
Some users may use software from third-parties that may still use
those interfaces silently and possibly sacrificing the security of the
user's sensitive data silently.
For that reason those interfaces should genrally not be available by
default for existing third-party applications in Fedora anymore.
Fedora users should be aware whether they use applications that
utilize secure encryption algorithms or not.
To accomplish this we are going to bump the shared object name of
libcrypt.so from 1 to 2 and remove all of the functions that are
considered unsafe. The maintain POSIX or otherwise compatibility, we
keep providing a compatibility library (libcrypt.so.1) in a separated
package, that can be installed by the user.
Benefit to Fedora
Most of the benefits have already been explained in the detailed
description above.
For those given reasons the key benefit for Fedora is to provide their
users a default installation that ensures no third-party software can
use unsafe encryption algorithms silently. If a user still wants to
use such applications (or really requires the usage of those few POSIX
interfaces otherwise), it is required for them to install an
additional compatibility-package prior to using such an application.
Scope
* Proposal owners: Build the libxcrypt package with bumped so-name,
enable compatibility library for third-party applications and rebuild
the packages that require libcrypt.so.1. After all packages have been
rebuilt strip all hashing methods but the ones provided by former
glibc libcrypt from the compatibility library.
* Other developers: No involvement needed, but testing their packages
still work as expected.
* Release engineering: #8023
* List of deliverables: This change does not block any deliverable.
* Policies and guidelines: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)
Upgrade/compatibility impact
The library with the bumped so-name will be pulled automatically on
upgrades by autogenerated rpm dependencies. Users of third-party
applications linked against libcrypt.so.1 my need to install the
libxcrypt-compat package.
How To Test
There is no real testing needed, as the common interfaces of
libcrypt.so.2 do not differ from the ones of libcrypt.so.1, just the
legacy bits, which are not used by any application inside Fedora
anymore, are removed. Thus basic testing (does it start?) of the
applications using the crypt() (or crypt_gensalt()) interfaces is
sufficient.
User Experience
No user-visible impacts, but maybe the need for manually installing
the libxcrypt-compat package for some third-party applications.
Dependencies
There are about 187 pacakges that require libcrypt.so.1, which need to
be rebuild at some point (e.g. during mass-rebuild). There is no
immediate rebuild needed as we still provide a reduced, but still
sufficient, libcrypt.so.1 library for POSIX compatibility.
Contingency Plan
# Change the symlink from the libxcrypt-devel package to point to the
libcrypt.so.1 library again.
# Rebuild all packages, that already require libcrypt.so.2
# Fully revert the so-name bump.
Documentation
The version of the libxcrypt package included with Fedora 30 now ships
the libcrypt.so2 library and does not provide the legacy API functions
that have been provided by glibc's libcrypt.so.1. The removed
functions by name are encrypt, encrypt_r, setkey, setkey_r, and
fcrypt.
If you are using a third-party application that links against those
functions, or that is linked against glibc's libcrypt, you may need to
install the libxcrypt-compat package manually.
All existing binary executables linked against glibc's libcrypt should
work unmodified with the libcrypt.so.1 library supplied by the
libxcrypt-compat package.
Release Notes
See the paragraph about documentation above.
