Greetings, my name is Alejandro Lopez from Slimbook Computers and I'm writing this email following Matthew's advice.
We are hardware company committed to the flawless integration and improvement of the end user experience with the Linux OS and the hardware it runs on.
We were given the chance to work together with the KDE team back in 2016 when other laptop brands didn't even think about it, and after getting the approval from both parties, the objective of our collaboration was the birth of a modern and sleek device that excelled in performance and provided a flawless user experience for the community.
The intent of this email is to let you know that the current demand for your amazing Fedora distribution is 2% from all our orders, and we think that this should change. I've sent to Matthew some general reports on which distros are currently in demand from our customers, and KDE Neon had an exponential growth versus other distros.
What are your thoughts on this situation?
I believe that we should work something out together to fix this. I think we should do more than offer Fedora as just another operating system (the user can choose up to 12 distributions).
Thank you,
Hi, I'm afraid that despite the name, this is really a GNOME-specific list. I would try again on devel@lists.fedoraproject.org where you'll likely get more responses.
Good luck,
Michael

So my first thought is, it seems that some people on this thread are assuming you're asking for shipping KDE on Fedora on a Slimbook, but that wasn't my understanding based on your mail.
My understanding based on your mail was that you were asking about how to get a higher percentage of Fedora Workstation pre-install orders. Is that right? If I'm misunderstanding and your mail really was about kde on fedora on slimbooks and not Fedora Workstation on Fedora on Slimbooks, then sorry and disregard the rest of this mail.
You also mentioned that KDE Neon has exponential growth compared to other distros. What percentage of that is coming from the KDE Slimbook product versus one of the less specialized/kde-branded offerings?
If the lion's share of kde preinstalls are from purchasing the kde branded laptop product, one way to get more Fedora installs would be to potentially offer a Fedora branded laptop (e.g. have a fedora.slimbook.es selling a Fedora Slimbook next to kde.slimbook.es selling a KDE Slimbook)
When Lenovo partnered with us to do Fedora specific laptops, we mentioned it in Fedora Magazine and there was other press as well (zdnet etc). Maybe we could do something like that for slimbooks as well.
Lenovo also offered a modest discount to fedora contributors (I think anyone with a fedoraproject.org email alias?). That might be one way to attract fedora community members to the slimbook. Of course, there are a lot more fedora users than fedora developers, so it might not help all that much.

I read the OP's email the same way. And if there was a Fedora-branded Slimbook I think we'd love to feature it on our new website!

Hi, I have really explained myself badly.
I was thinking Fedora with GNOME, and I did think of Fedora-branded Slimbook (and fedora.slimbook.es).
But let me say that since we launched the KDE Slimbook, 4 linux distributions told us "can you put my logo on the same laptop and make a sundomain for my distro?". But we said no without these 2 "requirements": - I must not offer the same laptop as KDE Slimbook, it must be another hardware, not the same with another logo. - Let the distro developers can test the hardware and if they decide that some adjustment of their software can improve the user experience with this device, let's do it. It is not a necessary requirement, but it is better if we improve linux together (off course open source and compatible with other laptops).
I have written these emails, because I have new fantastic hardware.
PS: Discounts, donations, not a problem, and my co-workers speak English better than me.

OK, very interesting. This list was indeed the right place. ;)
Glad that's straightened out. :)
Could we have this be a topic of one of the upcoming Workstation video meetings? I'd be happy to join as well.

Yes, we should talk about it (see https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/317)! Perhaps we can get a couple of volunteers to talk over the details with Alejandro?

I was just talking with Alejandro about this last week, Alejandro asked me to share my opinion on this initiative here.
I believe this is a great opportunity to differentiate Fedora from other vendors and form a partnership, and for Slimbook to have an opportunity to be one of the distinct choices for Fedora users/contributors. I see the project going towards something similar to the HP dev one, where a specific laptop could be Fedora exclusive an tailored for a excellent Fedora experience, by choosing the components (if possible) that have good support upstream both in the kernel and user space with that Fedora version.
Just my 2 cents, looking forward to see where this initiative goes!
Carlos
Greetings to Matthew and all the Fedora staff,
(I'm sending this email to the mailing list because I haven't received a response from direct email addresses for months.I hope this is not a problem.)
I'm sorry that this project stopped, I don't know the reason, but I must have done something wrong. So I wanted to ping you and check if everything is going well over there. I really hope so :)
I have just checked the video of Matthew Miller playing around with the Framework laptop. Nice video! It's encouraging to see distributions joining those of us who make hardware. Does that mean that you guys are going to do a collab together? This is very good news for the Linux ecosystem, no matter if we really want to do so too,
I take my hat off (or fedora) to them, Framework, because their marketing campaign has been nothing but amazing success. They managed to have it marketed as a Lego-like easy to repair device. But as hardware experts, we can easily tell that this device is not easier to repair than any of our products, really. We still supply spare parts for 7 year old models from our catalog, like the Slimbook Classic or first gen Katana because we are concerned about the longevity and sustainability as well (so much that we are Greenpeace’s Spain hardware provider!).
Still, it fills us with joy to see that after a few years around Windows, the Framework has decided to show interest in Linux. The more we are in the game, the better for the Linux ecosystem.
Either way, that's a lot of rambling. We are still really interested in a collab with you with a Fedora Slimbook or anything else, swapping laptops or helping on source code. As long as it contributes to the GNU/Linux ecosystem, anything is fine!
Best regards, *Alejandro López* /CEO/

What you see is basically what there is. They sent a few folks laptops (and have offered more) to help make sure everything works cleanly, and published the interview with me.
I'm also sorry I didn't see you email earlier. What else do you need to move forward?
