I filed

WONTFIX'ed.
I concur; I'd not want Evolution broken because a shiny new app duplicates
some of its functionality.
But as both apps use the same backend, this isn't a big problem
in any
case.
Back end isn't the issue, it's bad UX have two apps do the same thing.
One can specify a default calendar app anyway, so I guess no changes would
need to be made to Shell, but as long as Evolution is installed it makes
sense to use its calendar.
