I concur; I'd not want Evolution broken because a shiny new app duplicates
some of its functionality.

Back end isn't the issue, it's bad UX have two apps do the same thing.
One can specify a default calendar app anyway, so I guess no changes would
need to be made to Shell, but as long as Evolution is installed it makes
sense to use its calendar.
Except that Evolution's calendar isn't as usable as GNOME Calendar hopes to be.
Which is why we're going to be replacing Evolution's functionality piecemeal.
