It looks like I'm done with the last ticket so I thought I take a shot at another icon with ticket #101.
I quickly threw together a couple of hires mock ups that reuse existing components, any feedback on a kickstart icon is appreciated... http://xorengineering.com/dev/icons/

Hi Bryan, Here's a few tips. Starting with a highres always leads to suboptimal metaphors. Think how you'd execute that at 16x16px. You're using way too many elements here. My understanding of the kickstart tool is that it creates a sort of receipe to perform future installations automatically. That's where you should focus with the metaphor. Think recipe, installation, automation, cloning... and try to minimize the number of objects required.
cheers
I added another concept but with two small icons, a configuration checklist and a stack of drives. Not as busy as the previous concepts but I'm not sure if the visual metaphor works.

I think kickstart is primarily an automated way to create a system. So maybe something with robots? A robotic system? Computers on a conveyer belt?

How about a robot kicking a monitor? :)

A couple more test icons, ks5 and ks6 are small icons with an attempt at a robot arm over some computer screens.

And another test, I'm still green when it comes to creating detail with such small icons, I think the r16.png is a little easier to see compared to the ks5.png but still needs work.

Hi, If i can make an oppinion.. r16 looks good & more definied. The black lines defining the robot arm helps.

We talked about your latest mockups for the system-config-kickstart icon at today's meeting. Here's some points we hope will help:
- the whole arm & monitor is hard to make out at 16x16. the lines aren't snapped to the pixel grid - because there aren't enough pixels in 16x16 to snap the artwork cleanly.
- the metaphor of a robot building a computer might still work at 16x16 if you show only the claw/hand of the robot + the monitor at that size. The icon could expand to show the full arm at larger sizes that could accommodate it.
- maybe show some light or sparkles emanating from the box/computer to show that it is coming to life? we want to show the robot is making the computer, not just moving it, if that makes sense.
What do you think?

I did a bit more work on the robot claw/hand for the smaller icons but I've got to say, I have a lot of respect for the talent of those who create these small icons. :)

r2.png through r6.png are some attempts at creating a starting point for a robot hand/claw that will be visible in the small icons.
