http://fedorahosted.org/cobbler
We've recently been working on a web ui refresh for cobbler, and one of the things that was discussed was the lack of a favicon. Historically cobbler has just utilized its name as the logo:
https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/attachment/wiki/UserDocs/logo.png?format=ra... http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=cobbler;a=blob_plain;f=web/content/logo-c...
It would be kind of kewl to have a logo to go with the refresh and to move forward with. As cobbler doesn't have a GUI other than the web interface the primary spots of the logo would be the favicon and inline on the web page. Currently the logo for the applications web interface is ~180x80px, but we aren't tied to any target size in particular.
The main thoughts on content would be something shoe related. We though just an unfinished shoe as one possibility, and another was a shoe on one of those stands with a hammer laying next to it. Not necessarily like this image, but it shows the stand I mean:
http://dir.coolclips.com/Business/Retail/Garment_Manufacturing/Cobbler_and_S...
However, we aren't the artistic ones, so are open to suggestion.
Hi,
As per the wikipedia the cobbler refers to A shoemaker who repairs shoes, rather than manufacturing them. Therefore we can use a shoe, hammer and nails and create a nice logo. Will try and work on this.
And I accepted the ticket #184.
thanks for images and ideas, will submit a design ASAP.

while i love the art, i think Buddhike has a point. simple and less colors with the same content otherwise seems like a good direction to go as it will scale down to favicon size better. I do think really like the version without the name inside it more too.

The colors were just to give an idea of what it is going to be, the final design will likely involve only two colors or at the most three. we'll likely have cobbler written around the decorative border. basically the goal is to make it look a bit vintage with the borders I gave and the tools being used and yet keeping up with modernism because of the boot.

i like it, good simplification of the sketches. I was never expecting to see such intricate hand drawn work in the first place (kudos to Abi).
i'm thinking browns for the hammer and shoe, i did some flat fillings with gimp and made it favicon size and i think it works. However the flat fillings don't look as nice as the fill you did with the blue.
Let me run the image and color question by the cobbler list.
-greg
As much as it's simplified, it looks too plain, like some sort of clipart image put together and a hammer thrown in.
Using colors and text inside was basically to make it look vintage but since nobody has done a colored version of what i had in mind, there's no way to know what that would look like but here's a very rough sketch i did using 3 colors which should give you an idea of how much it stands out and what i exactly wanted. I just did a rough sampling of the boot alone and the background to give you guys an idea. Im in no way a digital painter so this is all i could come up with: http://nightmoves.fedorapeople.org/images/cobbler-rough.jpg
As for the text inside of the circle, it was to make it look like one of those old logos with the vintage fonts sort of thing. Let me know.
Abi
Infact this was the reference I used and this is what I aimed for http://www.sibleydesign.com.au/images/folio/logo_cobbler.gif
That's the vintage look I wanted to give to the sketch I did but using 3 colors rather than 2 and a font something similar to the one you see above.
Come to think of it, you guys should prolly go with kemter's idea. Buddhika is too busy to color it and nobody else wishes to or if you do, go right ahead. I think I'm done with the task.

so i'd like to apologize. I mistook the tone of the above e-mail and initiated a sidelined conversation with Abi. After the intial e-mail I should have brought it back into the thread, but hitting reply is just too easy/lazy. that is my fault.
the summary (i can provide the thread if anyone feels it is needed) was this:
i said I liked where kemter went with the logo as far as the favicon goes. it fits much more simply and is easier to scale. I did go onto irc and chat with shenson, and he is a fan of the vintage (which I like, but was worried about scale on). however that with with Abi's explanations about his intent, we feel that it was a very nice concept to try and go for a more complete "larger" logo with the vintage style Abi was going aiming at for uses like the homepage and web app. I suggested that maybe if the boot from the larger logo was a separate layer in the final result and that layer could be scaled down to provide the favicon.
so... like i said. my fault. I do like the favicon target of what kemter colored, but was trying to see if there was a more in between compromise that utilized Abi's artistic intent.

Np Greg.
I can work on a more detailed painting based on Abi work, but since therw was no direct communication with the rest of the team (remember that there are 3 people working on it) there was no way to understand what the Cobbler team wants and need.
Using this as example, team must always have a group communication and always aim to have public and open threads, so any other team member can also provide help, guidence and why not, cheer us up.
Grep, I'm taking the ticket so I would like to continue our discussion through here. I would love to know what you think, that you need and how can we make it work. My aim is not to only provide something that you as team feel proud to show, but also follow some basic guidelines that make artwork work for all kind of needs.
We all do mistakes, but the important is to accept and continue working trying to make a better world :)
Now Greg, would you be able to provide me (and folks) a short resume of the things you need (beside a logo). I'm sure we will end up doing more than one and why not... having some shoes with a cobbler stamp! :P

The primary thing we need is a logo... In my first e-mail on this subject I did mention that we would not turn down some css/design help with our web interface. If thats what you meant, then thats the only list I have, otherwise i'm not 100% sure I am grasping the question.

Thanks greg for clarifying things up. At this point it's best just to go with whatever Maria Leandro and the rest have in store for you guys. Fact of the matter is there was no lack of communication whatsoever, this took place on irc, Maria saw it, so did the Kemter see it what exactly we discussed. But I think they know more than I do in the grand scheme of things so let them go ahead with the original kemter's idea and soon enough cobbler should have a nice logo.

Hello,
I think when we selecting color we should think twice.
We have to limited the design to 3 4 colors for the shake of the simplicity, Coz this is a logo and using as a favicon.
It is nice Kemter, pls go ahead if possible. thanks

so maybe whats in the attachment will work? I am not so happy with the colored version. Was just a fast shoot, can work with other colors to, so any wishes?
i like it, good simplification of the sketches. I was never expecting to see such intricate hand drawn work in the first place (kudos to Abi).
i'm thinking browns for the hammer and shoe, i did some flat fillings with gimp and made it favicon size and i think it works. However the flat fillings don't look as nice as the fill you did with the blue.
Let me run the image and color question by the cobbler list.
ok, just ask. Then I will finish it

Hello,
I think when we selecting color we should think twice.
We have to limited the design to 3 4 colors for the shake of the simplicity, Coz this is a logo and using as a favicon.
The sum of colors in a logo has nothing to do with the size, I using 6 colors in the favicon of my personal page and u still can see what it is.
Its more that u need a clear visible and memorable shape.
There is a nice video, explaining the important things and how to create a logo. And the best we is it, to do it really only black and white. Only then you can makes stamps with it e.g.

while i love the art, i think Buddhike has a point. simple and less colors with the same content otherwise seems like a good direction to go as it will scale down to favicon size better. I do think really like the version without the name inside it more too.
