F14 Artwork
by Martin Sourada
Hi all,
I know it's a little bit earlier, but I started the F14 Theme wiki page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F14_Artwork
I've done some changes to the page that should make its layout more
well-arranged compared to F13 and F12. I hope this change would be for
good. Feedback and editions to the page are welcome.
And finally a reminder that our work on F14 theme starts at 2010-05-11
when the F14 Codename is decided -- and that is about 2.5 weeks from
now ;-)
Thanks,
Martin

F13 crufty icon purge
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks,
I wanted to tell you about a good opportunity for both artists and
interested non-artists to help make Fedora beautiful for F13.
Many releases since we switched from the Bluecurve icon theme now, and
we still have Bluecurve icons in Fedora! And we have some non-standard
non-Bluecurve icons as well. I think we should to update these crufty
old icons so we have a nice, clean, modern, an consistent desktop! In
the past couple of weeks folks from the GNOME art team (rockstars like
Lapo Calamandrei, Hylke Bons, and Jakub Steiner) have been helping fill
in the gaps, pointing me to icons that we should use, bugs in our icon
packages, and creating new icons as we have gaps.
If you would like to help in the crufty icon purge, I've added my
working to-do file for purging the cruft onto the design team wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design/F13_Icon_Purge
Here are specific things you can do to help:
1) Hunt down the crufty icons
Grab an F13 nightly build (from here,
http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/) create a liveusb
or live CD, boot it up, and go through it as thoroughly as possible, and
identify any icons in the menus or even in applications or on the
desktop that are bluecurve [1] or generally crufty and don't fit our
current icon standard - the gnome-icon-theme. [2]
The highest priority icons for the Purge (can you tell I've been playing
Final Fantasy 13? :) ) are those that are in the default Fedora 13
Desktop spin install. That being said, if you use other spins or install
apps that are not in the default package set, it is still helpful to
identify icons that need help for those as well. In some cases we will
be able to help upstream apps update and modernize their icons which is
very cool and very much part of the Fedora philosophy.
Whenever you identify an icon that needs replacing, file a ticket on the
design team trac: https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ You will need a
Fedora account to do this, and you'll need to log in in the upper right
corner before the 'new tickets' link shows up on the nav bar.
Then, add the ticket link to the Icon Purge wiki page, in the TO-DO
section:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design/F13_Icon_Purge#TO_DO
If you need any help with this let me know. If you're hung up on the
ticket-filing part, please don't be - just note all the crufty icons in
a flat text file or in the wiki and we can work through getting them
filed together.
2) Help eliminate the crufty icons!
Look through the list of TO-DOs on the Icon Purge wiki page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design/F13_Icon_Purge
In some cases, we have notes attached to the a to-do item about what
kind of metaphor we need for an icon, etc. In these cases, we need a new
icon design. Pop into #gnome-art and let us know you're interested in
working on a new icon.
In some cases, we have a note attached to an icon saying, 'talk to
so-and-so to get the icon'. In those cases, it would be most helpful for
you to go ahead and talk to so-and-so, get the icon, and move the to-do
to in-progress with some notes on what you did, possibly filing a bug in
bugzilla attaching the icons and asking the maintainer to update their
package.
I should be on IRC (my nick is mizmo) tomorrow and Friday as well as
next week actively working on this purge, so if you have any questions
on any particular items here please feel free to hit me up in
#fedora-design on freenode, or #gnome-art on gimpnet and I'll be happy
to guide you!
Thanks,
~m

[2] If you're not sure what gnome-icon-theme looks like, check out
Jakub's page on it: http://people.freedesktop.org/~jimmac/icons/
p.s.
We have been working out of a Dropbox.com share - I know it's not open
source and that makes me a really sad panda, but it really helps get the
job done, and I've been using it to learn more about how it works to get
ideas for how we could do an open source collaboration tool. If any of
you would like an invite to the share I would be more than happy to hook
you up. But there's no need to use Dropbox to help out if you don't want
to, don't worry. If you see a referral to a dropbox share, though, that
is what it is referring to.

Advice Request - GTK+ theming
by Nelson Marques
Hi,
On a totally personal level, I've decided to hack Equinox Radiance
Glass GTK2+ theme to look a bit more like Fedora (basically make it look
like Clearlooks/Fedora).
Equinox Radiance: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Equinox
+Radiance?content=121883
It appears that this is a Featured Theme in Ubuntu 10.4. I also know
it's a bad wave to transport such thing into the Fedora Realm, specially
from me since I'm not that Ubuntish...
I was just wondering if there is any documentation regarding theming on
Fedora. Though this is like a hobby thing more to do on my free time,
anyone could point some useful docs regarding to GTK+ theming using
Fedora brand colors?
Things like the colors for gnome-panel, buttons, windows frames etc
could be useful.
As a last resort I'll hack Clearlooks/Fedora to get some values and
some guidance, but I was hoping also to bring something new into this.
Currently Equinox isn't packaged for Fedora as far as I know, so I'll
also package it once I get the theme done. This is not exactly something
to be a part of Fedora distribution (as from my point of view, it's too
much Ubuntish), but it's my favourite theme, and I'll make it available
on my Fedora People Resources.
Thanks all in advance,
nelson

Hi all!
by mozzito@free.fr
Hi all!
My name is Guillaume AMAT, I'm a french web developer and Fedora user
for 2 years now :D
I test the Fedora 13 Beta since its release and already love it but I
found a little bug about the icon set.
The bookmark icon in the "Places" menu of the top panel (I have 9
bookmarks in Nautilus) is the Gnome icon.
I wanted to open a Trac ticket here but I didn't see any "Register" link...
In order to finish my pretty presentation, I follow your mailing list
for few months and I'm so proud to be a Fedora user.
All the aspects of this distribution are perfect for me (evolutions,
opinions, etc...).
But I don't understand why the global desktop theme (gtk and metacity
theme, plymouth, etc....) don't move as fast as the "foundations" of the
distribution.
A lack of designers ? A desired rhythme of evolution ?
I hope I could help in anything in the future ;)
P.S. : I'm not a good english writer... so excuse my spelling mistakes

Proposal
by Nelson Marques
Hi all,
I thought over in many things and I do recognize some problems that
might be related to people not enrolling with communities like our. I
would like to propose the following (though I could prepare a decent
document, I'd rather take this approach first).
Fedora 13 is going live soon, and honestly everyone should be committed
to it, but once F13 is live, it is expected that maybe in the upcoming
months after the release there's too much to do still. So maybe the best
time is to trigger this around July. At that time people should be
preparing for vacations and so on (at least the youth, which is probably
the main audience for this).
I am not sure when the theme is going to be decided and specially by
whom for Fedora 14, but this makes sense to be done right after such is
accomplished.
What I would like to do:
Launch a challenge in existing artist communities through a cooperation
protocol between Fedora and those communities, for some quick examples:
* opendesktop.org (gnome-look.org, kde-look.org, etc);
* deviantart.com
* gnome.org and kde.org (?? this people are most likely buried with
work already)
* suggestions from current artists
This challenge should be a "call to arms" oriented campaign in which
artists are invited to produce artwork for Fedora Project. As things are
not going to be much random, this is what I though that is going to be
needed:
#1 - Fedora 14 Theme > this has to be decided prior.
#2 - A document that provides guidelines for participants to comply
(this should be accomplished by the Fedora Design Team, as it's their
field of action/expertise).
#3 - A place where artists can submit their work. (this shouldnt be too
complicated and I would suggest to use a wiki page for this).
#4 - Licensing for submitted artwork (this is for sure something I have
no knowledge, I believe that eventually there are people here who have
done similiar things in the past, so selecting and highlighting such
would be great).
#5 - A committee to analyze the submitted artwork. We can run this as
Fedora or eventually also invite people from other communities, such as
GNOME, KDE, etc. If this artwork is going to be enabled by Fedora and
distributed for KDE/GNOME, makes sense to me to have someone from their
project on this also. See such option as strengthening bonds between us
and them.
#6 - A proper Marketing/Communication campaign for this. We should be
able to reach everyone.
#7 - Decide what kind of artwork we want (ex: GNOME Meta Themes, KDE
themes, Icon Themes, wallpapers, videos ?).
#8 - Some Ambassadorial support work. I would recon that _current_
artists who are ambassadors should have a key role here. As artists they
might be enrolled on other existing communities, they for sure talk the
same language as other artists and know how to attract people in a more
effective way than we can at Marketing. As for standard non-artist
Ambassadors, I believe they can help a lot also, as running such project
is mainly Public Relations work (something I suck at).
Some doubts:
- If we run such campaign, who decides if we can include or not
community based artwork? Can we freely include on F14 some extra stuff
that we get from such a campaign ?
- The tools... we are promoting open source, but if we scroll through
Deviant Art for instance, there is work which is distributed with a
friendly license, but is generated in maybe non-friendly software, such
as OS X platforms and eventually not GIMP/Inkscape stuff. Should we
apply restrictions and check for headers and traces of non-oss in the
submitted artwork?
- I would like submitters to place their artwork in place where FAS
registration is demanded. In the rush of submitting their work, they
will go through that step with some "pleasure". If such is done, with a
single group apply (ex: design-team) and joining a mailling list, their
approach as a potential Fedora contributor is basically done. This could
be explored.
- Ice breaking... People who might want to submit artwork will be for
sure in contact with some of our people. For example we can probably
forward them for a "help list" for this event or existing list such as
design-team to clear some doubts. Doing such will place them directly in
contact with Fedora Teams and will work as a Ice Breaker. This should
probably make their possible integration in the future much easier, as
they will start having friendly voices around.
- Motivation - Fedora is supposed to be installed in 24 million
computers worldwide (or so some say). This is a kick-ass distribution
channel for artists. It should provide enough motivation for them to
participate (if we are friendly with rules).
- Marketing Involvement > I'm not sure how many people face this, but
this is a typical marketing promotion campaign. It does require some
work and free time. I'm making myself available for this and I can nag
my employer to give me 5 hours weekly to work on this, plus my free
time.
- Ambassadorial Work > I'm not sure on how this can be done, so some
feedback from Ambassadors is welcome, and eventually we can see how we
can help each other. Even between the involved departments/teams of
Fedora in such, their work as moderators and promoters should be a must.
- Cost/Benefits Relation > This should be positive for everyone
involved. I'm not sure how design team faces such initiative... Fedora
Design is very important, and this should be an accessory for their
work, and of course a way to reinforce their ranks in number and gather
more contributors/artists for Fedora Artwork/Design Teams. That should
be our greatest benefict, plus providing a wider set or artwork on the
release. Get more people signed on FAS in a friendly way. Break the Ice
between Fedora and possible contributors. On the costs side... This is
will require time and effort from at least: Ambassadors, Marketing,
Design/Artwork and other teams of Fedora such as QA, packaging, etc. I
would say that 20 submissions for Meta-Themes would be already a great
win and would reward us all.
For the rest, this is a very superficial approach, but if there is
interest from Fedora on this, I will turn this into a more in-depth
document and more objective.
I believe we can try to do something different here and try to enlarge
our community a bit, plus providing a bit more of community
contributions.
All the problems have solutions, we just need to identify them and work
them out. I believe we have enough time between now and Fedora 14 theme
selection to work out this in a way that we can kick in fast and
aggressive soon after the main art theme is selected.
I really would love to ear everyone's view about this, their own ideas
on how to make better, their concerns, their critics... everything...
only in possession of such information we can have a strong basis to
work out soemthing like this.
From my personal point, I'm willing to place 10 hours/week for such
project and report to Marketing every single week about what has been
achieved.
Nelson.

Freemedia disc labels
by Alan Bruce
Hi,
I'm not a member of your team, but I have put together some labels for
Live and install media.
They are principally designed so that they use minimal ink, which makes
them more suitable for Freemedia purposes. They also work for full face
or partial face style printable discs.
I have linked them from my user page at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Muckypups
I have tried to follow the guidelines, and I think they're ok in that
regard.
Just wanted to make sure you have no objections.

can you recommend me any fine animation tool for 2D cartoon like animations?
Linux, vector based and possibly free (I do not mind paying for good
software so commercial tools for linux as welcome as well)

Allegheny College, Testing the Fedora 13 Design Spin
by Annamarie Morino
Hi,
My name is Annie Morino, and I am one of 42 students from Allegheny College
testing Fedora 13. My group is specifically working with the design spin. We
have been asked to help Fedora create a website explaining the best parts of
Fedora 13's design spin. To do this, we have been exploring the spin, and
taking notes on the difficulty and the interesting programs. I have posted
my findings on my fas account wiki home page.
Would someone please take a look and tell me what they think? And maybe they
could also tell me what to experiment with next based on my discoveries
today.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Morinoa
I think that is the link. If not, please let me know, and maybe someone can
walk me through which url to post.
Thank you very much,
Annie Morino
