Comments on guitar pick printing
I have contacted the three guitar pick printers asking them about the lines per inch limit of single color printing. Since the light blue portion of the Fedora logo is half white and half Fedora blue I think that small area could be printed with a 50% halftone. All the printers replied that we should use full color printing. All the printers charge about $185 per 1000 picks for single color pad printing and $275 per 1000 picks for full color digital printing. They will blend the single color (pad printing) as required. Pad printing typically has 125 to 175 lines per inch resolution. Pad printed ink is more durable than the digital print.
I believe that a conversation with Chrissy at InTuneGP could convince them to do a single color test print with our artwork using a suitable halftone for the light blue area. Can the Design team do this? I am submitting a ticket to ambassadors to authorize the expense for 1000 to 2000 picks.
So this could be a quick and easy task to get inexpensive guitar picks in time for LinuxFest NorthWest. Or it could be a moderately involved task.

I took a look today at half-toning the logo but I'm not sure it's going to work. It would be a lot safer to just use the logotype alone (just the 'fedora' text.) Is than a workable option?

I am always looking for the low coast solution. I like the idea of using the logo shape on the guitar pick but realize that the small area and large half tone resolution would make the dots show like the Sunday comics. So you are probably right, the logo type might be better from single color printing. And from marketing standpoint, when a musician looks at the pick a year from now trying to remember the name of the Linux recording studio they will see our name. We might want to use “fedora Jam” to help fill in the print area.

The pick printers are reluctant to print halftones. I was hoping that a professional (you) to professional (Chrissy at InTuneGP) conversation about capabilities might offer a solution. I am will to pay for a 100 pick test print of the logo if you and the printer think it is worth a try.
I trust your design judgment and will (probably) approve anything you come up with. I should get authorization to purchase the picks from the ambassadors this Thursday. The printers are reasonably quick but would probably need the art by the 17th to support North West Linux Fest. Thanks!

Duffy, If I can get the art before Monday (4/20) of 'fedora' or 'fedora Jam' in a 7/8 inch diameter circle, 600 dpi png file, and the CMYK spec for fedora blue, I can probably get the picks in time for LFNW.
I have been authorized to purchase 1000 picks. I'll submit the order and pay for the purchase. Thanks, Jeff

Is it OK for me to make the artwork myself? I will need to rush the order in order to get the picks for the LinuxFest. Thanks, Jeff Sandys

okay, here's the design: [[Image(guitar-pick-page001.png)]]
I've also attached a PDF that has the vector art and the CMYK values put in.
However, if they charge per color I am guessing they are not using CMYK (because multiple colors wouldn't be a cost issue at that point) And instead they are using spot colors. So please provide them these specs:
Fedora Blue - Pantone 2935 - CMYK 100/46/0/0
The PNG is going to be in RGB color and it's not going to give them the right color so if in doubt please provide them the PDF.
Let me know if anything comes up, I'm here until 5:30 pm eastern time today.

Hi Jeff, since the artwork is done I'm going to set this ticket to closed. Please feel free to reopen if there's any mods you need when the printers get back to you.
