I was looking at this recently:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=627497
I think this could be solved pretty easily by ABRT itself -- it could supply its own variant of `bt', written in Python, that would detect looping backtraces and skip to the end.
Writing a replacement for `bt' in Python is quite easy. I have an implementation on a branch here that I can send if you want.
I wonder what other ways that ABRT could use gdb's Python scripting to good effect, or in what ways we could modify gdb to be more useful to ABRT.
