Hi All,
FAD - an interest followed with exaggerated zeal; "he always follows the latest fads"; "it was all the rage that season" [syn: {craze}, {furor}, {furore}, {cult}, {rage}]
During last G11N FAD, i got comment on Facebook post as follows:
*Ray Doc https://www.facebook.com/raymond.doctor?fref=ufi** I don't like the acronym FAD. It basically means:an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived; a craze. Something different by way of an Acronym would be better. This means that the action is short-lived.*
And just saw one more. "Slightly unfortunate naming there – “Python 3 fad”" [1]
I think we should make sure to name it as "Fedora ---- activity day" i.e Fedora python activity day. FPAD or "Fedora Globalization activity day" FGAD.
Regards, Pravin

Technically, a FAD *is* shortlived. It is a brief event spanning just a few days to focus on a specific topic. Hopefully the topic or work is longer lived than the actual event :).

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I'm not sure adding random letters to the acronym make it any clearer. I mean, FPAD could be Perl or Python or Planning or etc. Perhaps if we renamed them Fedora Activity Events or Fedora Sprints?

I'm not sure I really feel like, of our problems with naming things, this is near the top of the list, because FADs are really an internal thing. (If someone has a better name for xdg-app, *that* I'd like to hear!) But then, I read this and I do kind of like "Fedora Sprints".

/me grabs paintbrush for bikeshed
If FAD really irks enough people then Fedora $foo Sprints (where $foo is the thing) seems good to me.
So - you'd have like Fedora Cloud Sprint 2016, Fedora Docs Sprint 2016, or something like that.

We've heard similar suggestions about FUDCon as well (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt), but we are still using that one in many regions too. Internally, it means something different to Fedora, which is the primary audience you want to engage with.
The important thing here is to adhere to the budget and organizing guidelines, but if you want to call it something else, by all means.
HTH, --RemyD.
Well, it may mean something different to Fedora, but it would be rewriting history to claim it wasn't named FUDCon precisely *because* it let us play with/against that acronym.

Quite literally. "Con" = against. Meaning FUDCon helps fight FUD. That was intentional.

When you organize something you are free to call it within reason something else. You will probably spend a lot of time answering people wondering if it is a FAD or not because it has been called that for 15 years :)

Here comes the freedom :) I think enough to keep category as a FAD for internal communication/process. May be some hint on [2] will be helpful or in template.

Personally I don't care about what it could mean to others, FAD is our internal abbreviation for a specific event. It's not necessary people who are not involved in the community understand it, because we can/should promote the event with the full name. So a "Python 3 FAD" becomes a "Python 3 activity day" which is auto-explaining, no needs to invent new acronyms here.
Crazy acronyms, abbreviations are could be really disturbing. Just this movie part fallen in:

Just 1:30.
I suggest to have some nice full name and done.

Someone will always find flaw with anything you come up with. I mean, I've been laughing at the rather negative connotations of "COPR" for years, but it's not as if I really care. I can't imagine two pointless messages on facebook even warrant the time it took it's taken everyone (including me) to type the messages in this thread.
