#35: Requesting trademark approval for Astronomy Spin ------------------------+------------------- Reporter: lupinix | Owner: Status: new | Priority: normal Component: Trademarks | Keywords: ------------------------+------------------- I have proposed a new Spin for astronomers, the Astronomy Spin. It's using only packages already in Fedora. I am requesting trademark approval for this spin.

Comment (by mattdm):
This will probably go under http://labs.fedoraproject.org/, rather than the new spins page, which is focused on desktop environments rather than application software selection. For that reason, we probably want a different exact name - maybe "Astronomy Lab" or "Astronomy Suite"?
Other than that, this seems straightforward.

Thank you for your comment :) You're right, a different exact name would be better with Fedora.next. I started a discussion on mailing list of Astronomy SIG and post the result here.

OK, lets call it "Astronomy Lab", I think "Lab" is better because it is a science related spin.

Sounds good to me — +1. Anyone else? Anyone object?

I don't understand the difference here. It is still a separate set of install media, and even the labs page calls it a spin. See the "Installing" section at the bottom of the labs page.
So is this a new Spin, or a comps addition? I have no idea what is actually being requested other than calling it "labs" instead of "spin".

This is a new Spin. The discussion on "Lab vs. Spin" is mainly focussed on its name on labs.fedoraproject.org (there it will be called "Astronomy Lab")

Comment (by robyduck):
All images on labs.fpo and spins.fpo are Spins. We've just separated the Desktop spins from functional spins, they have also different checksums and are in different directories.
I see this Astronomy spin depends on KDE, isn't it a standalone spin? Or is this just a group? [[br]] Also, is this supposed to be already in F23? If yes someone should talk also to websites because it needs to be added in the prerelease pages, nobody did this so far.[[br]] Finally, is the name Astronomy Lab? It's not that we call spins in a different way on labs.fpo, it seemed you said it will be called Astronomy Lab just in labs.fpo...
Thank you

Comment (by lupinix):
It is a standalone Spin, dependency means: The kickstart inlucdes the KDE live kickstart and just adds the astronnomical packages. And yes, it is supposed to be in F23. I think I have to file a ticket to design group for the banner etc., which other groups need a ticket too? I haven't found a proper and up to date documentation for this, did I miss something? Maybe when Astronomy Spin is finished I should work with Spins SIG on a up to date documentation.
@naming: Which way would be most conform with Fedora.next? "Lab" was added as a reaction on mattdms comment. Otherwise it would be called just "Astronomy". Or is my interpretation wrong?

Comment (by robyduck):
Well you should not only file a design ticket but also a websites ticket, personally I was aware only about Cinnamon for F23.
The name is ok as mattdm suggested, Astronomy Lab sounds good and is clear to everyone, but I'm not the one who decides it :) just giving you a feedback.
So please file a ticket in the websites Trac and we can get this in step by step, as the discussion now has become OT, sorry for that.

Calling for lazy consensus on this. As a F24 change, not urgent, so let's say two weeks from now. Needs at least 3 +1s and no -1s from relevant council members.
