#17: Objective proposal: Fedora Flavors Phase 2
------------------------+-------------------

------------------------+-------------------
I posted this on [https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/council-
discuss/2014-December/013066.html council-discuss] a few weeks ago and
there was a little discussion. Because this is really a continuation of
something we've previously agreed to, I think this is straightforward.
Since objectives are non-trivial, we should go for the "full +3 with no
-1s" consensus, but also, since this has technical components which impact
F22 planning -- which is starting now! -- I'd like to have the final
decision as soon as possible.
= Objective: Fedora Flavors, Second Phase. =
Overview:
* Take the initial Server/Workstation/Cloud split from Fedora 21 from an
experiment into solid production. Increase autonomy from FESCo and
improve targetted outreach.
Expected Impact:
* Increased user base and user satisfaction in targetted areas. Increased
contributor community around the targets. Increased ability to adapt to
future or expanded targets as needed.
Timeframe:
* Although we expect the "Fedora flavors" concept to be ongoing, this
"second phase" is targetted for the F22 and F23 releases, making it
an approximately 12-month objective. That way, this council objective
lead slot will be open shortly after Flock 2015.
Aspects:
- Coordinate Working Groups' development of updated PRDs and changes and
features for each release.
- Work with FESCo and Fedora Program Manager to develop process whereby
flavor-specific Changes are handled primarily at the WG level.
- Work with Outreach (marketing, ambassadors, etc.) to identify and plan
representation at new conferences specific to the various target
audiences.
- Plan, coordinate, and schedule release engineering and infrastructure
changes in advance of the F22 and F23 alpha releases.
- Lay groundwork for possible different release cycles and lifespans.
- Tooling and infrastructure for spins and remixes to increase
differentiation. # _Note: perhaps this is big enough to be an
independent
objective of its own, along with better promotion for spins._
- Work with Council and community to develop concrete process for
expansion
(or possible contraction) of Fedora flavors as identified needs change,
working from the product definition previously approved by the Board
Metrics:
- PRDs updated. Changes filed, changes accepted, changes completed.
- Conference reports; user data from those conferences.
- User and contributor surveys, and other user and contributor measures
- Usability is increased as measured by user testing specific to each
target group
----
(My only regret here is that we are not up to Phase Four, for full-on
Fedora alliteration.)
----
Additionally, I would like to nominate Stephen Gallagher for the role of
Objective Lead. Stephen brought the "three products" idea to Fedora.next,
was instrumental in its realization in the F21 release, and, also, tells
me that he will have significant time to dedicate to this over the next
year.
(Please vote on this nomination as a separate +1/-1 along with any +1
votes to the proposal overall.)

Packaging FAD China 2015
by Alick Zhao
Hi all,
We are planning to run a FAD in the Chinese community to promote
Fedora packaging.
We have the idea for quite some time, yet recently decided the time &
location and made
a rough budget. The relevant info is on the wiki page [1]. Please
review and let us know
whether it is time to create a ticket on the council trac. Thanks.

council meetings next two mondays (canceling the next one)
by Matthew Miller
Okay, so, schedule has next week as our ticket-based agenda meeting.
Since it's a holiday in the US, I'm proposing to move that to the
following week, which was previously open floor. Any objections?

Council meeting in a few minutes!
by Matthew Miller
Sorry, I forgot to send out a formal announcement earlier. We'll be
holding a Fedora Council meeting via Google Hangouts in a few minutes
(17:00 UTC).
The event is here, for public viewing:
https://plus.google.com/events/c34l8dg42616a8hhe10dah23kfo
We'll also be simultaneously in the #fedora-meeting channel, and
hopefully Remy will transcribe again. And I'll post the final Youtube
link later, along with the video in open webm/vp8 format.
The main topic is an update on the Three Editions, Phase Two objective
from Stephen Gallagher.

Engineering Update
by Josh Boyer
Hi All,
Prompted by the wonderful update we got from the Marketing Team
yesterday, I was thinking of how best to do an overall engineering
update for the Council. We could bring each WG or SIG in one at a
time to give an overview/update, but that would take a considerable
amount of time. Instead, I would like to propose something a bit
different.
I'd like to contact a number of the engineering groups and ask them to
find someone to present on things they are working towards for Fedora
23 and 24. Each presenter would be allotted around 5-10 minutes and
then we would have time for questions after. The idea here is to
focus on the most important task/item the group is working towards,
and to get a broad overview of how the efforts are working to advance
Fedora as a whole.
What does the rest of the Council (and others) think of this idea? We
might need to go a bit longer than an hour, but hopefully it would
give us a better picture to work from.
(Note: I am not including the Rings/Modularization and Editions
objectives in this. Those are their own thing individually.)

council trademark approval in the change policy
by Matthew Miller
As part of a FESCo and Spins SIG decision to reform the new spins
process, I added a section on trademark approval to:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Policy
It now says:
If your Change may require trademark approval (for example, if it is
a new Spin), file a ticket requesting trademark approval from the
Fedora Council. This approval will be done via the Council's
consensus-based process; if the request receives at least three
positive votes and no negative votes within 14 days, it is considered
approved.
14 days is rather long, but I figure since we're aiming for
ticket-based meetings every two weeks, that'll provide at least one
meeting where we can make sure it doesn't get missed and discuss if
necessary. Thoughts on this?

Council Meeting Today will be broadcast on Youtube
by Matthew Miller
Okay, so, here's the event to follow:
<https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c1us89qgphqj56f6dt4ai1ndquk>
This will, assuming everything goes well, include a link to streaming
video. Meanwhile, I'm setting up a Hangout for the council members +
Chris Roberts (from Fedora Marketing, because his presentation is the
main topic of today's meeting).
I don't _think_ you'll need a Google account to follow this. In any
case, we'll put the video up both on youtube and somewhere else in an
open format afterward.
I'll _also_ start the meeting in #fedora-meeting in Freenode, and try
to follow along there as well. (If anyone wants to live-transcribe,
that'd be cool.)
This is an experiment, so we'll see how it goes!
