[Minutes] [2018-04-14] General on-boarding guide, meeting time/place
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all! The CommOps meeting wrapped up a moment ago.
We spent some time brainstorming on on-boarding ideas for the general
guidelines in ticket #117.
Unfortunately, the meeting time conflict with Diversity was difficult to
manage. We'll need to figure out an alternate for next week. Stay posted.
Other details are below in the minutes.
Thanks all for coming out and participating!

Interviews on the Fedora Infrastructure Hackathon 2018
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all!
This week, the Fedora Infrastructure team is convening for a Hackathon
from April 9-13 at Fredericksburg, VA. The hackathon is intended to help
the team leap ahead for several critical Fedora and CentOS initiatives.
Dennis Otugo, a member of the CommOps team, interviewed members of the
Fedora Infrastructure team to ask what the goals for the hackathon are
and why it is needed.
Read more on the Community Blog:
https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/fedora-infrastructure-hackathon-2...
Thanks Dennis for putting the interview together, and thanks to the
interviewees for their answers on short notice. :-)

Re: Libravatar shutting down on 2018-09-01
by Eduard Lucena
I was reseraching a little bit and I found that this project is made in
python with Django. Is it possible that we can take this project and do an
implementation of our own?
The current implementation [1] is:
- Debian
- Postgres
- Django
- Python stack
And the stats (infrastructure requirements) [2] are:
- Storage:
- Application server:
- 1 GB General Purpose v1 Rackspace cloud server
- Number of user accounts: 6655
- Number of unique avatars: 6919 (355 MB)
- Static image server:
- 1 GB General Purpose v1 Rackspace cloud server
- Size of avatars on disk: 1.8 GB
- Traffic:
- Application server:
- Bandwidth: 328.31 MB
- Hits: 43,823
- Static image server:
- Bandwidth: 18.99 GB
- Total hits: 11,191,373
- Redirects (to Gravatar): 9,605,127
There is a long blog post [3] about why it's shutting down, but the link
that I found useful for possibly take this project is the development
environment [4].
It's just a question, maybe is too big to take it for the whole world, but
it looks like a great project for the Python SIG.

Hot topic: Governance models and your project's health
by Justin W. Flory
Hey CommOpsers!
Nothing formal this time – I saw this article on Opensource.com about
new research on open source governance models and wanted to share it.
https://opensource.com/open-organization/18/4/new-governance-model-research
The study compared the following four criteria against the governance
models in each project:
1. Basic activity metrics
2. Collaboration metrics
3. Documentation
4. Labels (i.e. effective triage)
The study does not assert a conclusion, but it comparing against a
previous version of the same study done in 2016. It's interesting to
note the shift in what some of the largest projects out there are doing.
I thought some of you all might dig this too. :-)

Libravatar shutting down on 2018-09-01
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all,
Libravatar announced this morning they are shutting down their service
on 2018 September 1; this affects applications that use Libravatar, such
as Pagure, Tahrir (Fedora Badges), and possibly others.
https://blog.libravatar.org/posts/Libravatar.org_is_shutting_down_on_2018...
In their post, they mentioned they do not know of another FOSS image
hosting service like Libravatar. If hosting images ourselves is not
desired, Gravatar is the best viable alternative I know of.
Since the Infrastructure hackathon is next week, I thought this might be
timely to mention, since it affects most Fedora applications that use a
profile picture for contributors.
I will try and file RFEs on Pagure and Tahrir today, but other affected
services don't immediately come to mind. Feel free to file some too if
there are more.

Action needed: Choose a new meeting time
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all,
As discussed earlier, please fill out this WhenIsGood poll by Sunday,
March 31, to decide a new meeting day and time for CommOps.
http://whenisgood.net/fedora/commops/spring-2018-meeting
Make sure to update your time zone before choosing times, so they
display correctly for you. I also split up meeting times by 30 minutes,
to allow for greater flexibility for start / finish times.
We'll try and finalize the new time before next week's meeting. Please
fill this out by this Sunday, March 31, so we can update the meeting to
a new day and time.
Thanks all!
