Can someone verify for me that parameters set as kickstart metadata is ALWAYS a string?

e.g. If I set this:

                foobar=1

Then in a snippet I test:

                #if $foobar == 1

it returns false.

But if I test:

                #if $foobar == "1"

it returns true.

I ask because I've been attempting to do things like:

                #set global selinux = $getVar('selinux',0)

And then overriding it with ksmeta "selinux=1".  But then my tests are mixing string and integer types.

I guess the real question is :  Should ALL of my set/tests involving ksmeta variables be using strings?  e.g. change above global to:

                #set global selinux = $getVar('selinux','0')
