Just an update on progress w/ Snap [1], the cross-platform system
snapshot / restoration tool that I've been working on.
I've added windows support to the project, thus it is now possible to
use Snap to migrate windows instances across cloud providers / vm
hypervisors. The nifty thing about this is I was able to retrieve the
list of software installed locally on a system, and do a restore on the
program files which those are based off of.
Expanding upon this, I should be able to combine this w/ registry
snapshots / restorations (this is well documented) and use native
automated service installation mechanisms (see relevant articles about
doing this with postgres [2], and msiexec [3]) to enable full system
backups and recovery using the same tooling for windows as with linux
In addition to all of this, I've submitted Snap to Fedora [4] and Ubuntu
[5], any package reviews would be more than appreciated.
In any case, stay tuned for more updates!
