custom (ebs backed) Fedora 14 AMIs
by Brian LaMere
Greetings all - just wanted to let you know I made a couple tweeks to the
very very simple, very non-professional, non-bulletproof
"createfedorabootebs.sh" script. You can find slightly longer instructions
here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Publishing_image_to_EC2
The steps are relatively simple.
1) create an instance from the official AMI (or anywhere else, really)
2) create a new volume, whatever size (at least 2g or so) and mount it at
/dev/sdf
3) run the createfedorabootebs.sh script
4) snapshot the volume
5) register an AMI with the snapshot and the pvgrub hd0 aki
It's a simple script; even a novice can tell what is going on. The sources
are all from Fedora, and nothing funny is happening. This is the
low-speed, "I don't know boxgrinder, I don't have a machine I can run xen on
anyway, I want to know what is on the image" approach.
That said, I *heartily* recommend using jforbes' AMIs instead; he'll have
EBS-backed AMIs soon, I'm sure. This is only for those who want to play, or
need an ebs image today. Or, if you're really crazy, it's for people who
want to look at getting rawhide on ec2!

man is not functioning on fc14/ec2
by István
Hey guys,
i might be just tired
[root@ip-10-160 ~]# man man
No manual entry for man
[root@ip-10-160 ~]# rpm -qa | grep ^man
man-pages-3.25-1.fc14.noarch
man-db-2.5.7-6.fc14.x86_64
What else must be done to get this working?

default size of root fs
by István
Hey,
Don't you think it was a good idea to have at least 10G for / in FC14 EC2
image?
2G is a bit small comparing the available many 100G space, it is hardly
enough for typical LAMP installations or any kind of production server even
if you store the content in /mnt.

Istvan

Re: FC 14 root partition size
by Simon Smith
I just want to say I agree with Dima that 2GB for the root partition
for the 64-bit AMI is too small - I use a mix of 64- and 32-bit images
- the 10GB that the 32-bit provides is fine. For now I'll just have
my bootstrap scripts rearrange the disk layout, but here's a request
for the next set of images (or Fedora 15) 64-bit AMIs to have at least
10GB for the root partition.
And ditto on the huge thanks for making these AMIs available - I can
now migrate off of Fedora 8!
Thanks!
Simon

Hi,
I am using the 64bit version of the one you are using: ami-e291668b.

F14 AMI passwords
by Pete Zaitcev
Looking at the /etc/shadow in our official AMI ami-6e3a6a2b, I observed
that root and ec2-user have passwords. Why are they left in? I suppose
they do not hurt much, since sshd_config sets PasswordAuthentication
and PermitRootLogin to no. Still, I'm just curious what they are.
Even better, let's think in reverse: if the creator accidentially
used a real root password, can I crack any interesting servers by
cracking the root password and then applying it to bits of Fedora
infrastructure (I know it's not 3-DES anymore, but still)?
