The class organizer could add the dates and times to a shared calendar.
Anyone interested could then just subscribe to that calendar by pointing
their ical client to something like
http://calendar.fedoraproject.org and
receive the updates.
Sunbird is a good ical client and I often suggest it to coworkers when they
want to use our calendar server. If you are looking to set up a full fledged
ical server, take a look at the darwin calendar server:

It was a little tricky to set up, but once you get it going it runs well.
