Quem sabe não seja o drive da fita que está ruim? Já tentou ver o que o comando 'dmesg' retorna sobre isso? Pode ajudar a identificar algum problema.

Quem sabe não seja o drive da fita que está ruim? Já tentou ver o que o comando 'dmesg' retorna sobre isso? Pode ajudar a identificar algum problema.

Parece que o dispositivo SCSI está com erro mesmo. Provavelmente pode ser hardware, também pelo fato de não estar funcionando em nenhuma fita, pode ser um indicador disso.
Mas antes, para ter certeza, eu recomendo você iniciar com um LiveCD de alguma distribuição e tentar efetuar o processo para ver se dá o mesmo erro. Se der o mesmo erro, é provável realmente que seja problema no hardware... :(
