Astronomy packages
by Joseph Wang
Just wanted to get some input from both Fedora astronomy and mageia about
which astronomy related packages to package next. I'm working in audela.
Also I'll be working on getting mesa as a rpm.

IRAF Spec files
by Joseph Wang
I've tweaked the IRAF spec files some more. They are in
https://github.com/joequant/iraf in the debug branch under the rpm
directory. The main changes involved setting up the environment variables
to be a bit more robust.
I've also done work on getting IRAF to work with gfortran. It's not
working, but I've gotten it to compile, and I think I know what the main
problem is. The trouble is that rpp generates code that looks like
Integer Memi(1)
Common /mem/ memd
equivalence (memi, memd)
The trouble is that in f90, the compiler optimizes out array overflows, so
that this won't work to get a memory pointer. I tried a few workarounds,
they work, but they aren't clean. The correct fix should be to generate
code that looks like
Integer, pointer:: memi
memi = memd

IRAF RPM spec files
by Joseph Wang
Here is the spec file and patch file that gave me a working cl prompt
on mageia, and it should be rather easily portable to other RPM
distros. The big issue is that there is a chicken/egg issue in which
you have to build libVO to get xc and xc to get libVO, and I had to
split up the build into a bootstrap and non-bootstrap section.
It uses the system curl and f2c, and I'm trying to change the build so
that it uses the system readline and expat.

Starlab
by Eric Christensen
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I currently maintain Starlab in EPEL5 and EPEL6. It has been killed off in Fedora due to an inability to build and after futzing with it for a bit tonight I understand the frustration. Is this something that should be in Fedora (as in, is it worth my time messing with it) or should I just try to maintain the EPEL versions until they run out?
Anyone using this?
Thanks,
Eric

Another try at IRAF?
by Joseph Wang
Anyone game for trying to package IRAF (again)?
With 2.16 all of the licensing issues have been fixed. The build
system is ancient but with github we might be able to hack away on
that.

Target packages to RPMize
by Joseph Wang
Hi all,
I was wondering what people think are the major packages that we
should try to get into RPM's.
I've been doing work in Mageia to generate astronomy related RPM's and
since the rpm's are
mostly interchangable between Fedora and Mageia, I'd like to
coordinate work so that we
get as much stuff working as possible (and so we all doing get killed
by MacOSX).
My background is mostly theoretical, so I'd be interested in finding
out from the observers what
are the major missing packages. In particular, it looks like IRAF has
finally got all of the IP issues
resolved so would it be worth packaging that now.
The other thing is that I've worked on pyp2rpm which generates rpm's
from the python repository and
that seems to be working nicely.
Also, what about CASA from nrao?

local patch for ds9 for Fedora
by Joseph Wang
If you are packaging DS9 for fedora, you might be interesting in these
patches I wrote to package DS9 for Mageia. The main focus of the
patches is to use the local tk/tcl which is good for many different
reasons.
They've been submitted upstream.
