Glad to be of help. I probably wouldn't bother with cinnamon yet as
it, like gnome-shell, needs 3D. "yum install @mate-desktop" should get
you MATE or "yum install @xfce-desktop" will get you XFCE.

many thanks, that helped, sort of. Turns out that xorg-x11-drv-modesetting is
not a good idea. Once removed, I've got X going, now working on cinnamon / mate for
the desktop.
