Hi All,
Just thought I would ping the list about my current plans for kernel 3.8 in rawhide so people are aware of what's going on.
I'm breaking it down into a couple of phases to make the change less of a problem (with luck):
1) phase 1 is basically a basic 3.7 -> 3.8 jump and will include the following: * drop separate imx kernel. Currently doesn't support the previous HW we supported with the imx kernel. It's now buildable as a unified kernel * deal with new kernel config options we need to actually build the config.
2) enable new platforms * imx and other new SoCs supported in the unified kernel. This includes sunxi (AllWinner A1x) but it'll likely not be usable * tegra 3 in the -tegra kernel
3) tweak and stabilise
I'm well into phase 1 and we should have the first 3.8 kernel in a similar time frame to mainline (in the next day or so).

I think you should not bother with sunxi support, so far only some very very minimal support has landed upstream, see: http://linux-sunxi.org/Mainlining_Effort
There is no mmc nor nand support yet, so other then the ability to run from ramdisk there is nothing there really ...
Other then that your plan sounds good :)

Hans
p.s.
I'm still working on creating sunxi F-18 images, I'm getting closer and closer, but I keep hitting kernel issues ...

Oh I'm well aware of that, it's more a matter of getting it building to see what impact it had on unified kernels.

good info.
I just started building the 3.8rc2 for kirkwood based on the config-3.6.10-6.fc18.armv5tel.kirkwood. only one patch needed to be added so far. It imported without prompting for any extra features. However, I doubt this platform is the unified kernel... (?)
From my understanding the native tegra3 support didnt make it into 3.8 kernel... it had to wait until 3.9. (?)

Nope, not part of unified. Unified is only currently for v7 hardware. I've not seen any need for any patches based on the kirkwood 3.7 kernel as yet. The armv5 kernels at this point are pretty static and I expect them to remain as such.

The core tegra3 support landed upstream a few releases ago so I'm not sure what you're referring too.

I don't expect many changes either, but with the other changes going on, things might still break..

I was getting tegra 3 and tegra 4 mixed up. :) The tegra 4 patches didn't make it into the 3.8 kernel. :)

When you're dropping separate kernels, dealing with new kconfig options, or shuffling around config-arm* files, please keep in mind that the older Fedora releases get rebased as well. Right now, F18 is at 3.7 in updates-testing, but it will eventually move to the 3.8 kernel and F17 likely will a bit after that.
If a platform is dropped in rawhide but not the older releases, you'll still wind up having to deal with it there. I'm not sure there's much that can be done, but it is something that does come up every time we do a kernel rebase.

Yes, well and truly aware of that. I've seen the 3.7 kernel in updates-testing. We're discussing the pros and cons to work out the best way to deal with these. Thanks for the heads up though.
