Cooperative Bug Isolation for Fedora 17
by Ben Liblit
The Cooperative Bug Isolation Project (CBI) is now available for Fedora
17. We currently offer instrumented versions of Evolution, The GIMP,
GNOME Panel, Gnumeric, Liferea, Nautilus, Pidgin, and Rhythmbox.
Download at <http://research.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/>. Or just
download and install
<http://research.cs.wisc.edu/cbi/downloads/rpm/fedora-17-i386/RPMS.tools/c...>
to automatically configure your system to use the CBI repository.
It's that easy! Tell your friends! Tell your neighbors! The more of
you there are, the more bugs we can find.
We still offer CBI packages for earlier releases as well, going all the
way back to Fedora 1. When and if you decide to upgrade to Fedora 17,
we'll be ready for you. Until then, your participation remains valuable
even on older distributions.

Important information about how you can participate in the town halls
via IRC, as well as the details of each town hall meeting, can be seen

Announcing Fedora 17. Relish it.
by Robyn Bergeron
"At the heat of a thousand hot dog cookers, the seventeenth release of
Fedora shall be forged by contributors the world over, and it will be
known as: Beefy Miracle. The mustard shall indicate progress.
For six months, participants in the Fedora Project shall freely
contribute to the release of the distribution, in the spirit of the Four
Foundations -- Freedom, Friends, Features, and First -- and moreover,
they shall relish in Fun, as a community without Fun would be like a day
without sunshine.
Upon release, a free and open source operating system shall be available
to all, catering to a variety of tastes -- those of end-users, systems
administrators, and developers, with a common thread that binds them
all: No, not their love for hot dogs, silly, as we certainly know that
Fedora shall be created and used by those whose dietary preference could
be either Beefy or Leafy. Freedom, my friends, Freedom is the Great
Condiment, which shall enable all users of the Beefy Miracle to Create,
Share, and Do."
-- The Book of Sauerkraut, Chapter 12, Verse 529
The Beefy Miracle hath arrived. Behold, for it is available to download now:
http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora
And lo, detailed information about this release can be seen in the
release notes:
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/17/html/Release_Notes/
== Condiments ==
Frankly, we believe this is the beefiest release ever -- chock full of
condiments, more commonly known as Features, to customize your
experience to your tastes. We take pride in our toppings, and in our
fine ingredients; Fedora 17 includes both over- and under-the-bun
improvements that show off the power and flexibility of the advancing
state of free (range) software.
On the desktop: GNOME 3.4 introduces many user experience improvements,
including new search capabilities in the activities overview, improved
themes, and enhancements to the Documents and Contacts applications. A
new application, GNOME-boxes, provides easy access to virtual machines.
Additionally, GIMP 2.8, the newest version of the GNU Image
Manipulation Program, brings new improvements, such as single-window
mode, layer groups, and on-canvas editing.
For developers: You never sausage a great array of development tools!
Fedora 17 includes a pre-release of Juno, the release of the Eclipse
SDK expected in June 2012. Java 7 (and OpenJDK 7) is the default Java
runtime and Java build toolset, and GCC 4.7.x is now the primary
compiler in Fedora. Other language refreshes include shipping Ruby
1.9.3, the latest stable version of the Ruby language; PHP 5.4, the
latest PHP stack; an update of Erlang to the R15 release; and the D
language has been updated to the 2.058 release.
Under the hood, and in the cloud: Serving up hot dogs all day long?
Increase your reliability and versatility with the new enhancements to
the clustering stack in Fedora 17. Load balancing and high availability
improvements have been made, allowing systems administrators to deploy
Fedora in environments requiring greater availability and clustered file
systems. JBoss Application Server (AS) 7 has also been added to Fedora
17; this fast, lightweight, and modular application server allows you to
run full Java EE applications. oVirt, a server virtualization management
system with advanced capabilities for hosts and guests, is also
included. The automatic multi-seat feature enables multiple, concurrent
end-users to utilize a desktop from a single machine, which any systems
administrator can relish. And we couldn't possibly write this without
talking about our foray into Hot Dogs as a Service (HDaaS)... oh, just
kidding, we just had to make a cloudy joke. In all seriousness, though,
OpenStack, a collection of services that can be used to set up and run
cloud compute and storage infrastructure, has been updated to the latest
release, 2012.1 (Essex), in Fedora 17.

beyond to attempt to solve some of the issues that have been brought up.
The Board is looking for volunteers on the purposes.
The most attentive news is the newly appointed Fedora Board Member Garrett

Formally announcing FUDCon: Paris and FUDCon: Lawrence by Robyn
Bergeron<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Rbergero>published on Tue
May 8 14:06:41 UTC 2012
News on Announcement
Desk[1]<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-7>,
"As many of you know, FUDCon is the abbreviation for Fedora Users and
Developers Conference, an event we typically hold 4 times per year in
various regions of the world. These events are proposed and arranged
largely by Fedora contributors, and are designed to be events where
contributors and those new to Fedora can learn, share, hack, and
participate in various aspects of the Fedora Project.
It is with great pleasure that I am formally announcing two upcoming
FUDCons:
*FUDCon for the EMEA region in 2012 will be held in Paris, France, October
13-15, 2012 [2] <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-8>*.
This particular event will be held over those days in two locations; the
first day, Saturday the 13th, will be held at the Eurosites Georges V
facility, in conjunction with the Open World Forum
(OWF)[3]<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-9>,
and on the 14th and 15th at Universcience. I'd like to thank Kevin Raymond
and the rest of the FUDCon Paris team for putting together this bid, and
for working with OWF to procure space during that event for the first day
of FUDCon; I think that this will be an interesting opportunity to showcase
Fedora to a captive audience that is passionate about open source. I would
also like to thank the other teams who submitted bids for the EMEA region.
*The next FUDCon for North America will be held in Lawrence, Kansas, on the
18th through 20th of January, 2013
[4]<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-10>,
at the University of Kansas*. While you can peruse the bidding page
[5]<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-11>for
details, I'd like to note that Lawrence is home to many awesome
things:
It is the birth place of the Django Project, was pinpointed as the "center
of the earth" in Google Earth, was the home of William Burroughs, is the
location of the awesomely-named Free State Brewing Company, has been named
a top-ten college town, and most importantly, is the collegiate location of
our resident Wiki Czar and Doer of Stuff, Ian Weller, who, as you may have
guessed, was also the author of this FUDCon bid. A big thank-you! to Ian
for volunteering to put this together.
FUDCon planning continues, in grand tradition, to be open to everyone for
participation; if you are interested in contributing to the discussion or
lending a helping hand, I encourage you to subscribe to the FUDCon planning
mailing list [6] <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-12>.
Cheers,"

Appointment to the Fedora Board, and Elections Reminder by Robyn
Bergeron<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Rbergero>published on Tue
May 8 17:29:41 UTC 2012
News on Announcement
Desk[1]<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue295#cite_note-13>,
"I'm pleased to announce the appointment of Garrett
Holmstrom<http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Gholms>to the Fedora
Board. In this election cycle, three Board seats are open for
election, and two Board appointee seats are open; the first appointee,
Garrett, is being appointed prior to nominations opening, and the second
will be appointed after elections are completed.
Garrett (aka: gholms) has been involved in the Cloud SIG since the "early
days" (early 2010, to be more precise), as the maintainer of the euca2ools
package. As the group has progressed, he's taken on a number of tasks,
doled out much advice and opinion, and has shown himself to be an excellent
leader and communicator. He's also a regular in the #fedora-devel channel,
willing to help out and answer questions as he can. I'm delighted that he
has agreed to serve on the Board; I believe that, as a community, we should
constantly strive to nurture and grow new leadership, and I think that
Garrett's communication skills and positive attitude will be a fantastic
asset to the Board as Fedora continues to evolve.
Garrett will be taking seat A3, previously held by Rudi Landmann. (And a
big thank you to Rudi for his contributions as a Fedora Board member --
your time and efforts are greatly valued!)
I'd also like to remind everyone of the ongoing elections process; today,
May 8th, is the last day to submit questions to the elections
questionnaire. Beginning tomorrow, May 9th, nominations for the Board,
FESCo, and FAmSCo will be open, closing on May 15th.

"At the last Board Meeting, the Board looked at the poll results asking
whether people felt like continuing to name releases. The results seemed to
show that many people do like having a name associated with Fedora
releases. However, the discussion before and after has shown there is a
desire to improve upon the current method of selecting the names.
The Board decided that it would be worthwhile to come up with a new
procedure for selecting the name for the Fedora 19 release and beyond to
attempt to solve some of the issues that have been brought up. The Board is
looking for volunteers who would like to do two things:
(1) Answer the following questions:
-
- What benefits does the Project get from the current release naming
process?
- What changes do people want to see in a revised process?
(2) Come up with at least one proposal and analyze it according to the
answers to the previous questions.
If anyone is interested in coming to a weekly meeting to work on this,
please feel free to contact me. If anyone would like to champion this,
please contact me ASAP so I know whether there is someone else who's going
to champion this or if I need to lead the effort.
I've put up a wiki page that tries to summarize the answers to the first
two questions that I've seen circulated on the advisory-board mailing list
and a link to the only proposal I currently know of (mizmo's proposal to
use a single theme for all of the new Fedora releases)."

Fedora Events
The purpose of event is to build a global Fedora events calendar, and to
identify responsible Ambassadors for each event. The event page is laid out
by quarter and by region. Please maintain the layout, as it is crucial for
budget planning. Events can be added to this page whether or not they have
an Ambassador owner. Events without an owner are not eligible for funding,
but being listed allows any Ambassador to take ownership of the event and

Fedora Project is naming names
"The Fedora Project is still trying to clarify its process of naming major
releases, a process that has been met with calls for revision within the
Fedora community.
"To address the problem, Fedora Advisory Board member Toshio Kuratomi is
working to build a new naming process that will avoid some of the pitfalls
of the most-recent naming concerns."

Fedora 17 beta review – Miraculously beefy
"The Fedora Project is preparing for the final release of Fedora 17 with
the beta version of their cutting edge distribution. Dubbed Beefy Miracle,
the release of the beta was delayed for three weeks while further testing

team.
"This development version brings with it a number of new features and
upgrades, all of them to show off the very latest, and upcoming, open

The Future of release names
by Toshio Kuratomi
At the last Board Meeting, the Board looked at the poll results asking
whether people felt like continuing to name releases. The results seemed
to show that many people do like having a name associated with Fedora
releases. However, the discussion before and after has shown there is
a desire to improve upon the current method of selecting the names.
The Board decided that it would be worthwhile to come up with a new
procedure for selecting the name for the Fedora 19 release and beyond to
attempt to solve some of the issues that have been brought up. The Board
is looking for volunteers who would like to do two things:
(1) Answer the following questions:
* What benefits does the Project get from the current release naming
process?
* What changes do people want to see in a revised process?
(2) Come up with at least one proposal and analyze it according to the
answers to the previous questions.
If anyone is interested in coming to a weekly meeting to work on this,
please feel free to contact me. If anyone would like to champion this,
please contact me ASAP so I know whether there is someone else who's going
to champion this or if I need to lead the effort.
I've put up a wiki page that tries to summarize the answers to the first two
questions that I've seen circulated on the advisory-board mailing list and a
link to the only proposal I currently know of (mizmo's proposal to use
a single theme for all of the new Fedora releases).
Thanks,
-Toshio

Appointment to the Fedora Board, and Elections Reminder
by Robyn Bergeron
I'm pleased to announce the appointment of Garrett Holmstrom to the
Fedora Board. In this election cycle, three Board seats are open for
election, and two Board appointee seats are open; the first appointee,
Garrett, is being appointed prior to nominations opening, and the second
will be appointed after elections are completed.
Garrett (aka: gholms) has been involved in the Cloud SIG since the
"early days" (early 2010, to be more precise), as the maintainer of the
euca2ools package. As the group has progressed, he's taken on a number
of tasks, doled out much advice and opinion, and has shown himself to be
an excellent leader and communicator. He's also a regular in the
#fedora-devel channel, willing to help out and answer questions as he
can. I'm delighted that he has agreed to serve on the Board; I believe
that, as a community, we should constantly strive to nurture and grow
new leadership, and I think that Garrett's communication skills and
positive attitude will be a fantastic asset to the Board as Fedora
continues to evolve.
Garrett will be taking seat A3, previously held by Rudi Landmann. (And a
big thank you to Rudi for his contributions as a Fedora Board member --
your time and efforts are greatly valued!)
I'd also like to remind everyone of the ongoing elections process;
today, May 8th, is the last day to submit questions to the elections
questionnaire. Beginning tomorrow, May 9th, nominations for the Board,
FESCo, and FAmSCo will be open, closing on May 15th.
Additional information about Elections can be seen here:

A complete history of Board Members is available here:

Cheers,
-Robyn
